Completely agree with hotskins and rahzel. If you're gonna spend anyway, get the ST. Moving up to the GT and VT is a different story.

Not sure about the flicker so if mine does it can't be too bad. I do notice the lines from time to time but it is not enough to bother me.

Maybe it's not necessarily flicker, but rather my eyes/brain noticing the movement of the horizontal lines.

I've noticed that when I get something new I really scrutinize it at first and then after time I accept any "flaws", perceived or actual, and then am able to fully enjoy it. Hopefully it will be the same with the 55ST50.

What HDMI cables are you guys using?

Currently I'm using Monoprice 6ft 28AWG High Speed HDMI cables. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024008&p_id=3992&seq=1&format=1#largeimage The picture is fine, but the cables jut out to the side of the TV and are easily visible. I don't want to use port savers or right angle adapters.

I thought about trying the 6ft Ultra Slim Series High Performance HDMI Cable w/ RedMere Technology, but don't know if it is flexible enough to tuck behind the TV. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10255&cs_id=1025503&p_id=9889&seq=1&format=1#largeimage

I am using
http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=3303
with a right angle.
I replaced all my HDMI cables with these when they were 35% off and got all the proper lengths.

Thank you for the helpful replies!

Does the ST have any additional tech to combat image retention? e.g. better pixel orbiter or anything of the like? My relative is a huge sports guy and will be watching hours of espn and baseball....programming that often uses static logos or score boxes.

I've watched football all day every Sunday and Monday of the season. IR is not a problem.

Love those mono price redmere cables, they have the same flexibility/thickness as a smartphone USB charge cable, in other words very small and flexible. Shouldn't be easily seen when mounted on the side jacks. Keep in mind the >15 foot cables are about as thick as a standard 6ft hdmi cable.

Does anyone have any information on the EQ Sound Settings. I have an Australian 50ST50 and they're seem to be no preset sound EQ's you can only
adjust the sound EQ manually.

There is a 150, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k an 12k setting.

Each setting is at midline at default but can be adjusted up or down by 6 increments. So from -6 to +6 basically yet it does not show any numbers at all when you are adjusting
a setting up or down for some reason.

Can anyone give me any info on how to adjust these settings to achieve good sound from the TV's speakers?

Thanks.

Why not? Since HDMI is purely digital, they don't degrade the image at all. I've been using two of them (Monoprice #3850) snapped together on each of my HDMI inputs for years without a single issue. I've also used them on several installs for other people also with no issues or problems.

A test i did with 10 adapters to disprove people who claimed they degrade the picture quality:

If that's the case I'll probably keep my cables and purchase some 270 degree port savers (3850). I briefly researched adapters on AVS and some people claimed that anything other than a direct connection could be problematic. I figured why take the chance.

I am going to guess that most on here will tell you that trying to get better sound out of the thin, built-in speakers is an exercise in futility.

I disagree. The sound system in the ST is not bad for a tv. Even has a built in sub. It doesn't compare to my HT system of course. An 8 band EQ can make a big difference for any set of speakers. Especially for listening to music. ie The built in Pandora. I wish my ST had one. All I can say to Metal is play with it until it sounds good to you. You can't hurt it.

A friend of mine had his tv stolen on friday and has decided to replace it with the 55" ST50. I have the 60" and he loved what the picture looks like. He did ask one question which i'm not sure how to answer. His question is "Why is a plasma 600hz but it says the refresh rate is 48hz?" Can anyone answer this so i can let him know. TIA

The refresh rate is 60hz with an option to set it to 48hz for 1080/24p sources, but most don't use it as it flickers too much.
600hz is just a marketing term, info on it here: http://m.cnet.com/news/what-is-600hz/57548118

Can't expect much from that. I left everything default. In my experience with Panasonic plasma built in speakers any added effect makes things worse. imo, better to leave everything default, which is usually no effects added.
I heard the 55ST50's speakers one time and knew I had to upgrade.

I am not necessarily an audiophile. I had always wanted 5.1 so I finally got around to getting it. But, it was not like I was dying with the TV's speakers. I just remembered what I had read a couple of pages ago (see above) from someone who perhaps is more in tune (pun intended) with sound quality. (I know that one guy is not "most" tongue.gif).

Actually, you can have it both ways (TV and home cinema 5.1 audio) if your AVR supports HDMI-CEC option to do so. Mine does (Denon AVR-3313). I also use a Harmony One as well and have separate activities for this.

For those times when all I want to do is watch TV and not be bothered of HC, I use TV (50ST50) speakers. Other times I may want full DD 5.1; it's there if I want it. This saves AVR from wear and tear, which was probably the reason my previous AVR (AVR-3310) died prematurely after only 3 years and 4 months of use.

My findings over the past few days of use is 50ST50 audio is quite acceptable. Much better than previous TV.

Randy, what devices do you have connected to the GT50? I'm still undecided about connecting my devices individually to my ST50 or connecting them to my Denon AVR-1712 and running a single HDMI cable to the ST50.

Just received my 55” ST50 last week and I’ve been noticing something odd – something I can only refer to as a ‘rainbow’ effect, which I see occasionally when my eye moves from or to a bright area on the screen. I also noticed it big time last night on the logo for a disc manufacturer – it was bright white letters on a black screen and the letters almost had a shimmer to them.

Now, this is my 1st plasma after a decade of LCD/LED – could it be that my eye just needs to get used to plasma? Or is this something that could be addressed in the color space menu (I’ve noticed many different settings posted here but still don’t have a clear idea what those figures mean) or even the service menu with a professional calibration?
I read a hundred or so pages back that a few people had seen something similar to this, and I was hoping for some more professional input.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure why but it seems like my 60 ST50 is getting worse in regards to IR.

I have about 200 hours on it now and its as though it can get IR practically instantly now (it did not do this a month ago).

I just spent 2 days getting rid of ticker IR because I watched 2 hours of tennis on the tennis channel. The IR was so bad I thought it would never go away (in fact I can still very faintly see just a tad of the ticker if I look really close). I only watched the freaking channel for 2 hours.

Last night I was watching the 5th Element and during the opening credits when the movie title (in white block letters) was displayed with the space background after the title dissapeared I could still see IR from it for the rest of the opening credits. The movie title was displayed for no more than 15 seconds.

I am not watching at 100% contrast so why is all of the sudden IR becoming such an issue??? In the first month I owned this set I never had IR problems like this. I would watch a football game and then go check and see nothing. Now I cant watch 15 minutes of something with any logo or static content or else I have a heck of a time trying to get rid of IR.

Have you disabled Pixel Orbiter or anything like that?

Is the pixel orbiter really that effective at reducing IR? I read somewhere in this thread that it's not that useful as it only shifts a small amount.

I have 200 hours on my 55ST50 and have only noticed IR from the SMART VIERA logo that pops up when the set is powered on. I have yet to watch programs with solid logos, save for a few minutes of premier league soccer here and there, but I have played FIFA 13 several times, anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. No IR from that thankfully.

If you want to leave a logo on for 12 hours a day, NO plasma is for you.

Given how you say you'll use your new display, I think a LCD display with a LED back light would be the best choice for you.

Your discovering that you can see a plasma phenomenon that few people can see. If you have a return period use that is see if the effects minimize over time. Otherwise do what ever you can to switch back to LCD. There were a small percentage of people who had a similar problem with DLP projection systems. A few of those people got used to their displays or front projectors by slowing down head and eye movement.

Man, I feel ya! I just got a new projector and I'm so busy scrutinizing it I haven't even begun to enjoy it yet.

I see the same thing from time to time but it's not nearly intrusive enough for me to want to switch to an LCD TV. I guess it depends how sensitive you are to the effect.
