I have an old kenwood system theres a stereo equalizer GE-292 theres a stereo casette deck and a power amp km-993 and a cd player and a control amp. My main problem is with the ac cords. Only one goes to the wall outlet and there are plugs on the back of some of them, but the directions only say "To AC outlet" but it doesnt say to which one or which device. Basically could someone walk me thorugh setting this up? Id be greatful this has given me a big headache. Im afraid to hook it up wrong and short it or something. Thanks

What would a surge protector do? There are already outlets on the back of some of the recievers i just dont know which plugs into which. There are two ac outlets on the back of one of them. One says switched and one says unswitched.

Provide all the outlets you need and provide surge protection.

Switched means the device connected to that outlet will get power when the controlling device is powered up.
Unswitched means that outlet will always have power.

So i do not use the outlets on the back of the recievers at all?

No need to unless you want to. Do you have manuals?
Plug everything into a power strip and have fun. Simple solution.

No different than plugging in lamps or appliances.

Sorry to be blunt, but if you have a problem with connecting AC power, I can't imagine what will happen when you try to interconnect everything else.

Yes i have manuals and they just say to ac outlet, but not which one. So just plug everything into a surge protector and ignore the outlets on the back?

Uh... yeah?

Typically they are labeled as "convenience outlets". In this case, it appears to be confusing and an inconvenience. So... take the easy road.

Would you happen to know about the system controls? The manuals dont clearly specify which one plugs into which and top or bottom hole.

Hey, don't worry about all of that.

While it is possible to plug in some of the components together, it is normally accepted to be better to plug them in separately. The reason is due to interference from said components being plugged in together, plus any and all audio connections, may cause a grounding issue, or signal interference, called noise.

Truth be told, while they made the outlets on the back of the equipment to be used, the state of electronic equipment has come a lot farther, and a good clean surge protector can do all of it, plus provide surge protection, should you need it.

However, it is your equipment, so feel free to plug them in whatever way you choose.

"System Controls"? I don't know what those are. Can you elaborate?

There are two holes on the back of some of the recievers that say system control above them. they look like headphone cords.

I use JVC equipment and they have a connection called "CompuLink". It is basically 3.5mm cord that connects each component to the AVR. So when a CD player is connected via CompuLink to the AVR, the AVR actually controls the CD Player, i.e. FF, Play, Pause, stop, etc...

My guess is that what you see is Kenwood's version of it.

If so, isn't ironic now that Kenwood and JVC are co-owned?!?
