Has Onkyo solved their HDMI issues?

Hello-

I am looking to piece together a modest home theater and i have been looking at the Onkyo receivers due to their low price as my Budget is <$300. It is pretty well documented in consumer reviews that the brand has had issues with the HDMI boards. Is this solved yet or is this an ongoing issue with Onkyo AVRs?

thanks

AFAIK, the HDMI issues affected the x05/x06/x07 models... But the lastest generation AVRs are having problems where the unit goes wonky. It switches inputs on its own and does not respond to the remote control... I am not sure if they fixed this problem...

Many reported HDMI failure with heat issues, which are generally thought to be the culprit. The 09 series, the current one, run much cooler. If concerned, go to a big box store that carries them and put your hand on a demo unit that's been on all day. I have and found them hardly warm at all.

They do have a rep for bad customer service though, can you find something from Denon or Yamaha? At the lower price points, they are all pretty close performance wise. Just decide on a feature set and see how much it'll cost from a few brands.

I have 2 Onkyos, an 04 and an 06. Both get warm so I placed fans on the back corner where the heat is generated on my big Onkyo, the 876. 3+ years with no issues.

Onyko=POS

unless you're strapped for cash, I can't see ever buying one of these. I tried helping my buddy who bought one and the HDMI issues were terrible... even after it was sent out for service.

Over the last 2 years Onkyo has sold well over 1 million AVRs..
If they had significant HDMI issues vs. other brands..
Why haven't we seen more complaints?

Just my $0.02...

No problems with my TX-NR509 - ($200 - $240...)
PS3 Slim, ROKU 2, Vizio 42" HDTV.
I keep a USB Hub powered outward flow 4" dual fans on top on the AVR,
because only have 3" top clearance, all other sides are open.
Heat and Dust are the killers.

Looks like Fry's is selling the 509 for $197. I am thinking of grabbing this and getting an extended warranty just to cover myself. Thoughts? Other option is to buy the Yamaha 371 on newegg for $180.

The HDMI issues frequently took a couple of years to to show up. Not saying they haven't fixed the problem. Just saying it may be too early to conclude the problems have been resolved.

The HDMI board does run hot and heat is the enemy of electronics. That's why some of us use fans to cool the HDMI board. Hopefully it will help deter any problems.

Buckwheat? OK Boss Hawg, That's a really strong argument. You my friend are an indisputable idiot.

Edit; OK I may have overreacted. I can't judge you from one possibly erroneous post but .... not good.

No they presently have terrible HDMI board issues on all the 2012 models. And onkyo seems to be making it worse with each attempt to fix through FW updates. They really have become crap. Just look on the official onkyo forums and you'll see. It's a disgrace. Picture actually is not visible and the only way to get the new receivers to work is to constantly unplug them. Last years models were good. I presently have a 709 a great receiver, which replaced a defective 707 which also had a faulty HDMI board but the new line is just crap. Get a Denon spend a little more. The 509 from last year is probably a safe bet. Although certain Onkyo's produced during certain months in 2011 have serious defects that onkyo has admitted to also HDMI Board issues. Honestly Onkyo's are for Vegas gamblers. So roll the dice like I have twice although this was my last roll. Denon is next for me. Good Luck!!!
