This is somewhat a rhetorical question, as you hit the nail on the head when you said "perfect" is subjective. You need some sort of standard to measure against, and the only one that's going to help your TV display it's images the way they were created by the director is the rec709 HDTV standard.
The best way to get your TV to the rec709 standard is to get a calibration disc and use it to set your basic settings (brightness, contrast, color). The next step would be to buy a meter and get software so you can set grayscale - either that or have a calibrator come in and calibrate it for you. Copying other people's settings generally won't work because every TV is different (even if they're the same model).
