digital tuners?

Thread Starter
I have an older projection tv that does 1080i and has a DVI input (with an hdmi adapter on it). I want to recieve OTA channels, but it doesn't have a digital tuner. Is it possible to get a cheap tuner somewhere? Maybe a satellite box with a built in tuner that will output 1080i? Any suggestions?

Back when sets like this came out, set top ATSC tuners were available. I have no clue if any are still made, but there are some out there - I know I have one made by Samsung (I think it's an SIT-T151) sitting in my basement.

you can probably get a digital converter box such as those sold back with OTA went digital. There are better ones than just the cheap ones that were sold as places like Walmart. Try Solidsignal.com.

The cheap digital converter boxes didn't have HD output, so they won't do what the OP wants. There were (more expensive) boxes that did output HD, though.

I never said the ones he would want were cheap. I was just letting him know there were other boxes than the cheap ones sold at most places.

Although, he may be able to find some old satellite box someone is looking to get rid of to use, as he suggested. I remember way back in the day, you could attach an antenna to those boxes to get the local OTA signals. I just don't know if the boxes will work without a satellite subscription. I never had satellite service, only explored it, but I remember reading it about some of the boxes that were being offered.

If you have a computer to use as a DVR you can use a SiliconDust HDHR-US http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/atsc/

I agree. A PC is the best way to go if you can, it gives you lots of options.

Channel Master still makes set top HD tuners.

Not sure if it's any better or worse than the Mygica that was already mentioned, so you'll need to do some investigating.

I'm still using my old LG3510 (which is no long produced) with mixed feeling. Good image quality. Some nice features like being able to tune to a "physical" channel number and having it remain there even if it doesn't detect a signal which makes experimenting with antennas a lot easier. But it's has a crappy remote system that almost never works on the first button press. And it likes to default to 480p output and the output cannot be changed using the remote, so almost every time it's powered up I have to actually go to the front panel and change the output.

How can that box be more expensive than Roku?

Obviously I found this thread while looking for OTA + DVI (or HDMI) and these things are WAY overpriced for what they are, no? I get that it's network connected (I like that) but it really offers very little for $130 when you compare it to Roku, Apple TV, Logitech Revue, etc.

I guess I'll be skipping OTA for some of my TVs and just waiting until I get a new TV with OTA tuner built in.
