Reusing Old Hardware

I was just going through some old hardware and was wondering if the following would be able to work as a basic htpc for a bedroom if I added a new video card like the HIS Radeon HD 4350 512 MB

Motherboard: ECS P4ITA Socket 423
Processor: P4 1.7ghz
Memory: 1gb (4x256mb) PC800 RDRAM

Possibly. It's really light on RAM. To be honest, you may want to look at an Atom box - you're a good portion of the way there with that video card purchase, and the Atom will be faster.

$75?!?!?!?!

Do not add that card.

Honestly I would look for something on Craigslist or at a garage sale with PCI for about $50 and then add a $15 5450 card. You would come out ahead.

But the thought of either makes me cringe personally.

Why should he get an atom? You can build a SNB pentium for about $30 or so more dollars and it will blow the atom away.

I don't see the point of atom or zacate anymore.

I did notice that the AGP cards where 4x to 5x the cost of a PCI one but I was just thinking about getting away cheaper than building a new one. But after the cost of the ram, video card, and case it's looking like it'll be close to $185 to upgrade the old hardware. Might as well add another $100 and get something worth it.

Agreed - my point was more than even the cheapest stuff out there is faster, but yeah, Sandy Bridge is so cheap, there's no reason not to.

It would work as Linux firewall or a network backup without doing much more than software.

Any word on how the new 32nm atoms are stacking up against zacate for HTPC use? I think I heard that the new atom still cant handle HD netflix streaming.

Except you wouldn't want an energy hog P4 on 24x7.
