"Value" AV Receiver Recomendations

Greetings -

I'm in the market for an HDMI AV Receiver that doesn't use HDMI Passthrough for Audio. My current Onkyo Receiver is the HT-R557 which requires me to use an Optical cable(s) to run audio to my TV.

With a budget of roughly $300 I was curious if this was possible. My immediate intention is to continue to use the Onkyo speakers I got with my HT-R557 reciever (HTIB) set which is 5.1. I don't care about 3D.

I was looking at the Pioneer VSX series, particularly the VXS 821-k but I'm not sure if I will run into the same issue or if it's that type of "quality" I should be looking for. Sorry for my ignorance.

HDMI Passthrough for Audio is exactly what does pass audio to your TV and it frees you from needing optical cables to your TV. So, consider rephrasing what you are asking for.

I cannot say because I am not familiar with this end of the market but it (HDMI Audio Passthrough) is pretty common these days.

If I were looking for a budget receiver I'd look at the Denon 1712 and 2112, both have MultEq XT and will eq a sub, which is a pretty big deal for a budget receiver. The 2112 can be had for <$450, and the 1712 can be had for fairly close to your budget if you call Electronics Expo or J&R Electronics and do a little haggling. After looking at the Denon 1712 it seems people are frustrated with setup. It also doesnt have analog up-conversion which after more research is something I want....but idk if a receiver exists in my price range for that.

Do the Pioneer VSX models have analog up-conversion?

The Pioneer VSX-1021 comes on sale for $299 almost every other weekend on Newegg. My friend bought one earlier this year. It does analog to HDMI video conversion and would be a better receiver than the VSX-821.

Plus the 1021 has networking.

The Onkyo RC-360 also has networking, internet radio streaming and analog to HDMI video conversion. Currently Amazon sells it for $321.

Awesome. I will wait for it to be on-sale at Newegg. I see them used in places for $300 but will definitely wait for new.

Is there anything in particular I will be missing out on or is this a solid mid-range system?

With your budget how can your miss out on anything?

You can only ask for so much with a $300 budget. What are your real requirements?

I mean that in a sense of are there major features I will be missing out on for say $50 to $100 more in which case id be willing to expand the budget.

Yamaha fan here. I have bought 2 used receivers and I could not be happier.

First one was a HTR-5635 back in 2004 for $150 and then I just picked up a RX-V667 for $260 in december.

Outside of Airplay how well do the Onkyo and Pioneer receivers here compare? Or am I splitting hairs at this point?
