TCAT looks very good. It is not quite as good as White Christmas, but that one got the royal treatment I suspect.
A number of scenes were originally grainy and remain so, but when it is good, it is great. Cary Grant's famous "purple shirt" that always creates a moire is still there, but looks almost perfect this time. Cinematography Oscar.
The sound is also quite good. VV was never into sound, but this has obviously been made from the original magnetic recordings.
The reason it's not as good as either Ten Commandments or White Christmas is simple: This transfer was created several years ago for the previous DVD release and was scanned, as I understand it, at 2K and prepared with the tools available at that time, whereas TC and WC were scanned at a much higher resolution and had their work done at that higher resolution. While To Catch a Thief looks mostly great, it could, in fact, look even better had they gone back and done a fresh transfer.
