Deadline Has Been Set (and Re-Set...) Theater Build - Page 14

Finally got the Grafik Eye wired up this weekend. No more halogen work lights in the room!

Glad I decided against adding the sconces to the walls. This is plenty of light for me, and I don't have the rope light yet. I'm sure that will brighten the room even more.

Carpet is next. Starting to get it narrowed down to a couple different styles. Nothing too fancy. Will post pics of the choices after the next carpet guy comes through this week.

I only see one problem - your screen is too small. biggrin.gif

Looks great. things really start to fly once the carpet goes in.

It does look nice and bright. How many perimeter lights did you install?

I know, right?. Might have been able to squeeze a couple more inches out of it...tongue.gif Can't wait for the carpet. That will really kick me back into gear.

I have 12 4" cans in the light tray. 3 on each side. the bulbs are only 45w, but they put out nice light. 4 puck lights above the stage. Also have 2 step lights, and wired for rope in the light tray, and spots behind the screen. Will have 5 zones total when it is done.

Gotta love the day that you can say goodbye to the portable work light. I thought that was right up there with finishing drywall for me. Looking forward to seeing what you have in mind for carpet.

Good deal. I really like the sound of the Grafik Eye cool.gif

Yep. That was a big moment for me. Makes me feel better about showing the progress to people when they come over. Now I can just press a button instead of fumbling in the dark to plug in a stupid cord...
I'm also looking forward to what I have in mind for carpet!rolleyes.gif

I haven't played around with it too much, but since I bought it used off of eBay there were already some scenes programmed in. For my first light controller it's pretty cool seeing one zone come up while the other goes down...biggrin.gif

Just went through your build thread today. Great space you've got. Very nicely done and you are (by my standards) making excellent progress. It is all coming together and looks like you are on the downhill slide, maybe just after the top, but on the downhill side anyway. biggrin.gif

How do the Emotiva's sound? I had considered them at one time, but due to timing and funding it did not work out for me. I have heard the Emotiva's surrounds and they are very nice, so I'm guessing the rest of the family are good performers as well.

Keep up the excellent progress and the pics coming.

Thanks RT. Progress is all relative I guess. Since I officially past the one year mark this month, it definitely isn't where I wanted it to be at this point. But why should this project be any different than any of my other ones?tongue.gif

So far I really like the way the Emotivas sound. Dialog is crystal clear and the front sound stage is very impressive to me. Surrounds are performing great as well. Once I get carpet in, I'll run Audyssey and see how that improves things. Then figure out the rest of the treatments from there. Re-run, tweak, etc...

Nice to have a CCC following along! I'll be sure to post my carpet options as soon as I get them figured out!

You are blazing a trail compared to my five or so years of construction. You are making very speedy progress indeed. I equate theater building to eating an elephant. If you look at the total objective it seems downright impossible, but broken up into smaller more manageable "bites" it does not seem so bad.

I think we all hit that point where we feel like we are riding a stationary bicycle or a hamster in his wheel just a spinning and spinning without getting anywhere. I felt like that several times during my build. Trust me that will pass and progress will prevail!

Not a lot of progress over the past 3 weeks. However, I did manage to cut a big hole in a perfectly good wall this weekend. Started working on the rack area.

22" x 38" "window" in the wall right outside the door to the HT.

This is a DIY "rack" solution. Picked up two 4' rails and 12 shelf brackets at Lowes. Just have the bottom two on for spacing right now.

I still have some MDF on hand, so will use that for the shelves. The plan is to "hide" the rack behind a hinged movie poster. I may even go crazy(er) and make a backlit poster frame since I have power right there, but that's farther down on the to-do list.

^^^Basically what I did as well for a DIY rack. Very slick and works really well at a fraction of the cost of a "professional" unit.

Smart choice.

Why did you go 22 instead of the standard 19? Extra room?

Thanks RT. At this point SWMBO is becoming very budget conscious on the project, so every little bit helps. On that topic, the carpet line item is also taking a hit. I had always envisioned the Masland Quadrate Times Square in there.

I have the sample on the floor and it looks great. The only problem is the $1,200 price difference between that and a good basic black carpet. Guess who won that contest...rolleyes.gif We agreed that it looked great, but would only be seen for a couple minutes before the lights went out. That money would be better spent on seating (SWMBO's words, and I will hold her to them tongue.gif), so at least I have ammo for some nice chairs from Roman.

I was driving myself crazy on the dimensions for the opening. Basically it came down to how I plan on finishing it off. I plan to make face plates for the front as well, similar to this.

DIY A/V Rack

So I will actually be adding a trim board inside the rough opening in order to have something to attach the face plates to. That should put the total width just over 20". Close enough for my purposes since I'm not putting an actual standard rack in there.

Also planning to hide it with a hinged movie poster frame (possibly back lit). Since the standard movie posters are 27" wide, I wasn't too concerned about the rack being as wide as it is.

I'm digging that rack, too, and that's a cool idea to put it behind a movie poster! The money you saved on that rack will go a long way towards that carpet you liked (or the chairs) biggrin.gif

SWMBO, seems to be a common "problem" around here with regards to theater budgets. biggrin.gif My SWMBO, actually keeps me from going bankrupt almost weekly as I would spend my budget on all things gadget or tech oriented and reminds me that we do legally have to clothe and feed our two boys, and provide safe shelter along with paying the mortgage, lights, gas, satellite, phone, car, etc., etc........ My last budget request for 1.3 million to purchase the Bugatti Veyron was denied. Don't know why it's not like I wanted the top of the line 2.3 million Vitesse. Sheesh........smile.gif

I do think she has a point though on the carpet, save some cash there and spend it where you will notice over the long run like quality seats. Sounds like she is a smart SWMBO.

Great job on the rack. It's exactly what I had done in my first and now my second theaters. (see below) I like the idea of hiding it behind a poster, but could see that getting old when you want to insert or change physical media. I'm slowly converting things over to digital, but I've still got plenty of BDs, DVDs and CDs, that I haven't ripped yet. Plus, I haven't found a completely wife friendly media player yet either.

Thanks. I'm waiting to dangle that savings carrot for a bit. "See Honey, building the rack I actually saved $XXX. Now we can upgrade the seats!" Hey, it works for her when she goes shopping...tongue.gif

How dare she deny you basic transportation! How are you supposed to get from point A to point B without a Bugatti?? wink.gif

Yeah, mine keeps me out of the poor house too. Oh, and she is a smart one...just ask her!tongue.gif

Thanks. Hope mine turns out as good as yours. Nice clean look.

I'm not that concerned about changing discs. We rarely do back to back movies, so it would just be an initial disc insert most of the time. I've thought about going digital too. Maybe down the road as it continues to get easier. Although I did download Scubasteve's demo disc, and I can play most of the files directly from my networked BD player. Just need to take some time to get things organized, but the room has to get "finished" first. rolleyes.gif

Between brewing a batch of my APA and having some friends over, I did manage to make a little more progress on the rack this weekend. Framed the inside of the opening, got some shelves cut and set up, and moved most of the equipment to the rack. Still need to move the XBox over.

I have also been looking at the 4x2 and 4x4 HDMI matrix switchers on Monoprice, as I want to be able to route the signals to various displays. The reviews on those make me a bit nervous though. Does anyone know of a decent (but not bank breaking) 4x2 or4x4 HDMI matrix switch? My other option is to just get a few HDMI splitters, but that would be more devices and cables. What have others done on here?
