Bought a gallon of Odell's Supur-Kist Two and it is TERRIBLE

I've heard Odell's Supur-Kist Two buttery topping is what most movie theaters use. I found a local distributor and bought a gallon thru them. They had two different models. One was the oil and the other was the solid at room temperature. I decided to go with the oil for ease of use (both contains trans fat).

I got home popped up some popcorn and poured a little bit into the bowl. It was terrible. It was by far the worst popping I've ever used. I've tried their real butter solution as well (http://www.popntop.com/popntop_popcorn.html) which is a lot better, but still nothing close to what the theaters use. Natural butter is FAR better than both of Odell's butter products.

The best topping I've found to date is Orville Redenbacher Butter Flavor Popping Oil which still doesn't taste like the theaters, but is very good and from all my taste tests this is what everyone likes.

I'm using Paragons coconut oil in the popper with Flavacol for salt.

Is there a difference between the two Supur-kist models? Should I try another brand? I know my local theater uses Odell's because their logo is printed on the popcorn tubs.

Maybe you got an old/bad batch of O'Dell's. We bought a gallon jug of the Supur-Kist II about a month ago and absolutely love it. Our popcorn was great before (using 4 oz. Country Harvest packets in our Paragon machine), but now it's over the top good.

I've never tried the solid butter topping. I went for the ease of use factor in the liquid version. Not sure how the two compare to each other.

I just use kernel seasons oil topping . Too bad they don't have larger sizes. As for salt I use flavacol but prefer to add it after popping

I've seen that in the stores recently. How does it compare to Orville Redenbacher Butter Flavor Popping Oil?

Hyper_Lite, I am wondering of you got the regular Supur-Kist Two or the Non-Trans Fat version?

I got the regular. My local vendor doesn't carry the non trans fat model. I'm wondering if I got an expired one though. There is no expiration date on the bottle, but it was the last one and it was out for demo on top of their popcorn machine. For all I know it could've been there for years.

That was my assumption, but there is no date listed anywhere on the bottle.

I used to manage and movie theater and we used Supur-Kist II and it was pretty good. Then we switched to Lou-Ana Buttery Topping, and I personally liked it a lot better. Plus I believe the Lou-Ana product is trans-fat free.

Lou Ana's what I use now too, but my favorite is still clarified butter. Really dislike the Orville Reddenbacher topping they sell at stores...

I've got some of the LouAnna brand but I haven't tried it yet. How are you guys using this? Putting a few spoonfuls in as it pops?

We don't have the Lou Anna Buttery Topping, but are using the Supur Kist II topping. We just heat a small cup of it in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds and then use a ladle to pour it on the popcorn in a layering fashion.

Super-Kist Two must be heated up before used as topping. The oil formula is such that the buttery flavor comes out when the oil is heated. Simply pouring it out of the bottle will taste pretty bad, like cold vegetable oil.

My recommendation? Get one of those maple syrup warmers that you put on the breakfast table for pancakes. Pour some superkist in that and keep it heated. It'll reward you.

The other Odell product, "Original Butter Topping", which is anhydrous butterfat, is pretty awesome. Tastes like what you get at Arclight. A very nutty, natural butter flavor, which is to be expected given that it's just butter.
