Need Advice On A Setup For Trance Music

I current'y live in an apartment building so I can't play music too loud. But still want to get the best quality as I listen to music a lot. I listen to mostly trance music and some hip- hop. I stream podcasts and music from my computer to my Apple TV which is connected to my Pioneer 1021 AVR with 2 bookshelf PSB speakers. It's a decent setup but I want to see how I can improve it.

Well the budget really depends on what equipment I need and the type of output I will get from the setup. I was thinking keeping it under $500. Perhaps just replace the bookshelf's? Maybe just get a peach tree nova or decca later on?

I have no way of telling. They were a hand me down from a family member. The back of the speakers only has the shop name and a serial number, but no model number anywhere. They are probably around 10 years old.

You may have an old PSB Aplha speaker.

Trance and hip hop.. add a subwoofer. You may not be able to play it loud but you get a fuller sound which wont make you need to crank up the volume.

Thanks, I read that trance doesn't use low bass, that its mostly mid range so a subwoofer won't help too much. But hip hop, on the other hand, has a lot of low db bass so I may need that.

Any suggestions for around $200ish for a sub? Remember I live in an apt so I don't need one thats too crazy.

What about going with a Peachtree tube amp? I think I can connect that to my Apple TV. I'm not sure how it would integrate with the Pioneer 1021 though as it doesn't have any pre-out.

I have largish bookshelves that has outstanding bass for its class, it has a 7 inch woofer and believe me a sub does wonders for Trance. Trance and hip hop may not have content in the 20-30 hz range, but even a small sub will produce better bass than most small speakers from 35 hz onwards..

I would go with adding a sub, first then decide if you still need to upgrade other stuff.. a correctly integrated sub does wonders specially for your type of music.

Energy is a reliable brand, but I am not familiar with that particular model. You may want to post your question at the subwoofer forum

That would be a good choice. It's an good value at that price for a 10" sub.

What do you guys think about getting 2 Klipsch Reference II 82 series floor standing speakers?

MSRP is $600each but I can get them for around $350-400 each. So it would just be 2 of these plus the energy sub I ordered.

If you get the 82's in an apartment, you probably won't need the sub.

Well, I already have the Energy 10.3 sub which cost me around $200. Are the bookshelf style PSB generally considered decent speakers? Maybe I just stick with them?
