How much of a difference?

Hi all, I must admit I'm an addict and I can't stop I continuously find myself upgrading I went from an infinity ps210 sub to an bicpl200, and now I'm looking for my final sub upgrade for a while I'm thinking about either the outlaw lfm-1ex or the hsu vtf3-4 my question is will I notice a considerable difference between these two choices over the bic pl200? Also are these two subs ( outlaw and hsu) pretty close in quality as I'm thinking about going for the outlaw because of the price savings. Thanks very much.

They are both great subs but I believe the VTF will dig a little deeper and give you more tuning options.

How about the Epik Legend?

Would the epik compete with these two?
The Empire would not sure about the Legend.
The only thing i can compare my Epik Empire to was my preveious duel Klipsch RW-12d's, and it dominated both of them, so i would think the Epik Legend would be great also.

If you've got the upgrade fever it likely won't stop with a mid level offering. Both of the subs you mentioned would be noticably better than the BIC PL-200, and will tide you over till you hear better. :P

Either of those subs would be a huge upgrade. Check out this chart and compare the Bic to the Outlaw (the HSU would be comparable to the Outlaw). It is not even close. At 20hz, the Outlaw is up 20Hz!

There's no love for other brands here. Just Internet direct. Nothing wrong at all with them (they're great!), there's just others out there.

Try velodyne DD plus, and JL fathom!

Its not that there is no love for them its just for the money they charge you can match or beat them for less money.

Umm.. You do realize the OP is talking about $600 subs here, right?

The DD+ series of subs start at $2800 and goes up to $4800........

Ummmm......he's an addict.....as he himself stated. His addiction won't stop till it's fed....properly! IMHO a Seaton would be a junkies finest score.

Keep saving and stop wasting.

I am an addict, but unfortunately not a very wealthy one. Thanks for all the opinions and advice, have a great day.

I would just grab the hsu vtf3-4 and call it a day. I had the 3-3 version and it was plenty for my 3300 cu ft room. I sold it and grabbed the VTF-15. Don't beat yourself up, this will be a huge upgrade over the Infinity and Bic subs. I have a Bic H100 in my bedroom and that thing wouldn't even be an appetizer for the 3-3. It will put a grin on you like nothing else. Plus with all those tuning options you can tinker for the next several months. What else is there to do in life but work, tinker, and enjoy your home theater?

Let me/us know on which way you decide.

Eat good food, drink good booze and have sex. Not necessarily in that order.

I just contacted outlaw and hsu, outlaw is backordered to the end of this month and the reason for that is the 549 price they had, they also said they wouldn't be doing the sale again for at least 6 month ( maybe true who knows) and the hsu is in stock. now for the dilemma both subs are pretty much the same price with shipping, which one would be a better choice? This is a big purchase for me so please excuse my hesitation. It's looking at about $750 shipped man does that make my ass pucker
post #19 of 32
you cant go wrong with either one. Designed by the same person.

I believe the HSU has more tuning options, and well, it is in stock

Hi all sorry for the late response especially with all the great help from everyone, I forgot to mention that my room is 11x20x7.5 so a little under 2000 cuft , would the hsu vtf-3 mk4 be to much for this room size thanks all.

Just a note, not sure what your electronics are, but my VTF3-3 in a ~4000 room just barely cracks the volume pot and is still at -10 on an Audyssey setup. So if you have Audyssey and normally efficient speakers, be ready to rinse and repeat if you set it too high to start. Umm, that's with one plugged if it matters.

I think he meant start out with low settings a little goes a long way I know the instructions say the sub gain set at 9 o'clock and then the AVR should be around -3 or 4 so as not to be over bearing I ended up somewhere between 8;30 and 8;45 on the gain.
If I ran it at 9 the AVR had to be set at -7.5 which will still get you there but it may take a strong bass scene to wake the sub if set to auto on.

Mostly just don't set it too high to start like he said above. Audyssey people like to say to start half way or something, but on mine that might as well be infinity - I never get close. I have it in a front corner, so that might be part of it, and maybe Hsu made a running change to get a more refined volume control or reduce the gain (mine is a few years old.)

Just saying - I don't see people talking about this with Hsu subs, but a lot of people run their subs way too high, so they wouldn't know there was a problem. Side note, my calibrator was here a few weeks ago, he also does Audyssey Pro audio cals, and he laughingly said that what he mostly hears is turn up the surrounds and turn up the sub!

Just for the record, I love Hsu subs (Dr. Hsu was the first person to tell me how to put an addy in a browser - I was using a library computer, on the phone with him, and he kept saying "just type it in" and I kept saying, "type what and where?" It was pretty funny, he was so patient and kind and we finally figured it out If I ever do another system upgrade, the sub is one thing I won't half to think about.

Great advice,thanks so much

I don't think there's such a thing as too much sub... there's a volume knob for that. Too little sub... that is definitely real. No easy button for that...
