Which Way to Fire Speakers- Shared Wall

I only got one real response to my thread in another forum and really want to try and hammer out some more answers since this weekend is time to buy a couch- and if I go sectional, which wall I put the screen on may change my furniture needs.

One wall is shared with the condo next door, is it better to put the speakers on that wall firing AWAY, or on the opposite wall firing TOWARDS. I have the Pioneer Andrew Jones or whatever setup complete with front towers, rears and sub.

Thanks guys!

You're not very clear explaining what you want to achieve, but check out http://www.dolby.com for suggested spkr placement. Also http://www.thx.com

To clarify, you have multiple wall choices for your screen, and you want to minimize the amount of sound that your neighbor hears by positioning the speaker properly, right?

Yep, perfect sorry I was not as clear as I should have been.

If you are staying there for the forseeable future you can get industrious and put some acoustic draywall up and wrap any electrical boxes in sound deadening material.

Other choices are to put up panels that diffuse the sound on the wall but the wife may not be down with that

Sonopan also looks to be acceptable

Long term that may be an option, and easier as no wife to say no . However, in the short term (couch buying tomorrow, with sectionals the wall may make a difference on what I need), mostly curious if it makes a difference which wall the speakers will be on.

Long term I am very interested in soundproofing though, not only or my theatre but also for resale. Though it seems like that will be a huge investment as its a fairly large room and open floor plan, and would need ceiling as well, that is a lot of drywall to be done.

I always get the best results with the fuzzy side away from the wall.

But seriously; it is not going to make too much difference; the sound level radiated by the walls will be about the same either way in most rooms.

It usually will make no difference. Midrange and higher frequencies which are directional are also easily stopped by most wall constructions, so it doesn't matter if the speakers are aimed at the communal wall. Bass frequencies are omni-directional, so the aiming of the speakers doesn't matter, and they will pass through all but the most sturdy walls with relative impunity.
