Why do most go for an LED when Plasmas have better PQ?

Hi,

Was going through the review on CNET.com and the best HDTV's for 2011 were plasmas. Plasmas took the top 4 spots.

So my question is why do most go for an LED when Plasmas have better PQ and offer higher screens sizes for lesser prices?

Because most believe that LED delivers better PQ and uses less power. The latter may be true but the better PQ? Not so true in some cases. And LED is the only thing in todays newer HDTV's so you dont have a choice when you buy a tv.

Nine out of the sixteen in the review were led lcd televisions.....and plasma did NOT take the top 4 spots number one went to the Sharp Elite led television.

Missed the sharp elite being LED. but lets leave that aside as its just way too costly.

Plasma does seem to have a better picture quality then LCD. This can be considered opinion, but Plasma's do tend to produce a more accurate and life-like picture.

Sometime people aren't concerend about getting the best product they can, but rather getting the latest technology or the most expensive product they can afford. The logical reason why someone would choose LED over Plasma, is brightness.

Plasma TV's can have a hard time in brighter rooms. Solution, close the curtains, or turn off the light. But this may not be enough for some viewing areas, and an LED is the best way to go.

Plasma's are heavy, energy hogs and possibly lose some of their great black levels over time. In certain darker environments, Plasma's can be ideal but not everyone has an ideal environment for a Plasma.

Not sure where you get that plasma offers higher screen sizes since 65" is about as big as plasmas get these days while Sharp offers both a 70 and 80 inch set with excellent picture quality. Apparently there are a lot of people out there that want those larger screen sizes.

Lets not....you are assuming that most cannot afford this? You should never assume anything. You are the second person today that is offering the wrong information to people on this site....do everyone a favor and educate yourself before posting.

This whole thread is a quality vs. price discussion. Leaving out that Sharp Elite makes perfect sense. Considering it's twice as expensive as their choice for the 2nd best TV, which happens to be a Plasma. The only reason why it's so expensive is because it is an LED/LCD that closely matches the performance a good Plasma.

You are assuming, that he was assuming, that most people can't afford it. Although he didn't say it, I will. I'm pretty sure most people can't afford a $4500 60" TV.

Maybe the bottom line is that there are people that prefer LCD picture quality.

I think it's fair to include the Sharp Elite. $4500 for a 60" TV isn't that obscene when you consider there are people on this forum paying $30k for an RCA cable.

It's all preference. It's generally a given that you have to spend more on an LED to achieve the same performance as a cheaper plasma. Room characteristics may also eliminate plasma as an option since even the best plasmas tend to wash out and lose contrast under bright lights. LED/LCD based sets have less of an advantage now since most of them are either glossy or some type of glass finish so they tend to be reflective.

Brightness is also a huge deal among people who buy LEDs, but as someone who owns both I really don't understand this argument as even my plasma can be way too bright if I wanted it to be. An overly bright picture is just not natural and not necessary.

My favorite thing about plasma, and its biggest advantage to me, is how well it handles motion. Even while the best LEDs (Sharp Elite, Sony 929) handle motion excellently, they still don't look as natural or convincing as a plasma.

in my case i don't have a choice. i have a bright lr, and plasmas fall flat on there face with that set-up.

I have a Panasonic VT30 (plasma) and the only LED I would trade it in for is the Sharp Elite

Both technologies have advantages and disadvantages. I own both a plasma (Pioneer Elite) and LED-LCD (Samsung). I prefer the picture quality of plasma but LCD certainly has its place.

Hopefully, this issue will become irrelevant if OLED delivers what it promises.

If we are not careful, this thread could turn into another plasma vs LCD pissing match.

^ cant wait for OLED but they need to work out the lifespan issues......

Burn-in was a turn-off for me. I don't want to have to worry about what I keep on the screen- if I want to leave my computer on it all day, I want to be able to do it and not have anything get burned-in. I also watch a lot of 4x3 content and don't want to think about the black side bars burning in.

Because that's what the vendors are pushing, LED. Don't ask me why.

They look better in the typical store environment, with the bright lights.
Plus they're more idiot proof, no dealer wants to confuse Mr. & Mrs. stupid with complicated sentences or guidelines.

I'm gonna go with price for what you get. LCD are generally cheaper......

I own DLP (front projection), Plasma, CCFL-LCD, LED-LCD and each tech has its pros & cons. There is no perfect display and some displays are just better suited for certain applications. Beyond that they all have their own unique 'look' and just as with people, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There is no doubt that OLED could be a game changer once they are affordable for the average consumer.

Perfectly stated. A genuine shame that so many people simply fail to comprehend that what looks great to them doesn't necessarily mean it looks great to the next person.

i could be wrong but isn't saying burn-in is a problem with plasmas kind of silly these days? from everything i've read, plasmas have made huge strides in preventing burn-in since there early days and most plasmas made in the last 5 years won't really have burn-in issues... and certainly nice 2011/2012 models...
