Need a sub to go with my setup

I just purchased a Denon 1612 AVR and 2 Polk Monitor 60s for my living room and I'm looking for a sub to go with them. Will any sub work? Or what specs do I need to look at before purchasing one? First sub I've ever bought. Thanks!

Sorry, I didn't read the guidelines for posting for info on subs so here's some more info that will help with what I'm looking for:


1. Budget - $200 + tax/shipping

2. Size requirements/limits - I don't know how big or small subs get but I have plenty of room to place it on the floor next to the tower speakers (Polk Monitor 60s) and if it's anywhere close to 3' x 3' it'll fit fine.

3. Room dimensions - room is 14' W x 18' L

4. Primary uses - 80% HT for movies/TV ans 20% for music listening

5. Listening habits - Don't need to shake the house but realistic sounds from movies would be nice.

6. Appearance requirements - Would like to have it all black since all other speakers are black.

7. Timeframe - No rush, maybe in the next month or so.

I guess what I'm asking is not so much which sub, but more along the lines of will any sub work with the 1612? Or do I need a sub with specific Ohm ratings, passive/active, etc.

Well, you probably don't want a passive sub, so something with an amplifier built in.

Aside from that, just about any sub will work. With your room size, there are few in your price range that should work well.

Something like the BIC F12.

Newegg has the Energy S10.3 on sale for $200 w/ free shipping. I should mention that I am not an expert like some folks on this site but I've read some good things about the S10.3 and it seems like it's definitely worth considering in that price range.

Just noticed, Amazon raised their price for the Bic F12 to $257.77
It used to be $188.

The BIC America V-1220, is $167.53 + $18.50 shipping.

The Energy S10.3 has an enviable frequency response and at $200 would be my first choice, but even BIC should work if your not really critical.

I have a PSW505 in a ~4300sqf area and it does quite an impressive job. I have it corner loaded and am sitting near field though.

This heads up came at the perfect time for me (my 13 year old sub just died), and I really appreciate the post. My new Energy sub is on the way and will be here Friday.
