mac-mini frustration w/5.1 DD

Thread Starter
I've had my mini for a week now. I'm just about at my wits end.
I have not been able to get 5.1DD or DTS from any on-line
services. I've tried itunes and netflix and at best could only manage
'MULTI-CHANNEL pcm'. I have an Anthem MRX 300 for a year
so I'm familar with its operation. I've tried optical-in,and HDMI
to my AVR. I even went and bought a usb DVD drive and
was able to get DD 5.1.

I messed around with the 'audio-midi' panel so much that now
I cant get ANY sound at all.

So now I am reinstalling Mac OS X,and am going to try and start
over, using a little more caution. There certainly is alot of conflicting
info on many forums on how to resolve this. Confusing to say the least.

At this point I'm just about ready to take it back and just get an
AppleTV. If I cant get 5.1 from this baby then I
dont want it.

I think I am going to install 'XBMC' before I try
any thing else.

Sorry for the rant, ANY pointers would be appreciated.

What I did is after installing the os, started the audi-midi software (I'm using HDMI to my Onkyo AVR), set the config for HDMI to match my av receiver config (5.1 in my case).
The set the system output to HDMI.
I use EyeTv and VLC as well as iTune.
In eyeTv I set the output ti HDMI
In VLC I only checked the 'use spdif is available' and the DD detection to auto.
In iTune, when you start a video you have to select the 2nd track as this is the dd 5.1 track.

I may be off, but I don't believe 5.1DD is available for Netflix through the PC.

Netflix doesn't yet provide DD5.1 on OS X through the web browser.
