I don't believe the XA2 offers any advantages over the A35 with HD-DVD playback.
I have not personally observed this while comparing the two. I owned both players, a Toshiba HD-A3, Panny Blu-Ray and XBox 360 addon. I kept the HD-A35 for my home theater and the HD-A3 for the family room. I sold the XA-2 and gave the XBox Addon to my Daughter.
But to your point. I didn't see any difference between the XA2 and A35 between HD-DVDs or DVDs. I thought both players were identical. And both were superior to anything I had seen on standard DVDs. The XA-2 was just bigger and bulkier. It was built like a tank! To be honest here...I even thought the comparison between DVDs played on them and HD-DVDs/Blu-Rays were very close on some movies. Especially animations like "Up", and "Alice" with Johnny Depp. The comparison was done between the Pannasonic Blu-Ray & SD-DVD on the A-35 with those 2 movies. Personally I think both players (XA-2 & A35) are excellent. I also compared Flash Gordon (BR v SD-A35), The Fifth Element (BR v SD-A35), Meet Joe Black (HD-DVD v DVD) on the XA2 & A35. And the Lord of the Rings trilogy (BR v SD-A35). In a very interesting twist...I actually like LOTR better in SD on the HD-A35 versus the Blu-Ray Edition. To my eyes it just looks better. Go figure.
