Can you use the ES8000 remote to control a PS3?

Just for Blu-Ray watching and menu navigation purposes, not as a game controller of course.

Unfortunately not that I'm aware of. The PS3 uses RF sensor and not IR. The Hamony One I use works great with the PS3 but you must buy the Logitech RF dongle made especially for it. Well worth it. You can program and configure whatever buttons you want to use on the H1 to control each specific piece of equipment.

Can we not use the Samsung PVR function here in the states? I hooked up a hard drive to the ES8000, but I don't see any way to record OTA. Is that only for those across the pond?

Totally agree with Opsguy and Arenaman. I have the HarmonyOne....its been perfect..big buttons, backlit, great touchscreen and programmability...just the right weight and size.

Me too! You know why? Because of you guys and Garnoch talked me Into it..lol! It is a great remote though.

Does anyone know with this "Soft AP" actually does on this TV? I've heard that you can use the TV as its own router, but when I go to use its Wifi on my Mac, it doesn't work and I can't get online, so I have no clue what this really does. I'm also curious to know what the Wifi direct does. I know what it does when you connect like 2 cell phone with Wifi direct, but what is this TV supposed to do? The other feature is the printer and the sound share which is cool, but what's point in hooking up a printer to this TV? The sound share works. I tried it with one of those Samsung Sound docks, but it didn't sound good at all so I returned it. Maybe a FW will fix that issue. Does anyone here know more about the Soft AP and Wifi direct, and the printer feature?

Ant, I bought am open box priced at 100 and used a $50 gift card. Net investment ...57 bucks for this badazz remote. I actually need to update and add the a,b,c,d color buttons to my bluray function for all the streaming functionality...
Yea that's a great deal.. I bought mine from their website as "refurb" for only $100 also. Haven't hooked to up yet for streaming though. That's next I guess

Watching Samsara right now; absolutely amazing color, detail, sharpness and resolution. Audio is sweet even via soundbar. Must see tv for the 8000 owners...

There is an awesome App called "Buddy TV" for iPhone and iPad. Haven't checked my android yet to see if its available for that as well, but with this App, you can control your TV. there's a remote setting and you can check showtimes, news on shows etc.. You can also control some DVRs. Its a very cool App. Highly recommended and Im not a big app user but this one is very convenient and functional.

Hey guys. Need some more advice please.

I am on UN65ES8000 #3 from Amazon.com. Driving me crazy.

If you remember #1 had stuck pixels, #2 had dead pixels. Unfortunately, I never looked for banding on those sets since the other issues had my attention, thus I have no baseline for comparison of where I am at now with #3 and banding.

Now #3 doesn't have stuck or dead, but does exhibit some vertical banding (see below) as I mentioned in a previous post. I think the pictures taken of a grayscale slide make it look worse than in person (I guess the CCD in the camera does a better job of picking up the effect than the eye), but it is certainly there. On a white slide it is less pronounced.

- The test picture in the menu system looks good as does normal TV viewing (mostly with the wife consisting of HGTV and Bravo - save me!).
- Haven't had a chance to view a movie yet.
- I am an avid soccer fan and games so far look good, but I can see the banding (damn this forum for making me aware of this stuff) when there are panning shots of the field.
- On panning shots of light colors you can see the banding as well. Don't know that I would see it as much if I wasn't aware and looking for it (damn these forums again!)

Based on the above and what I have read across this forum I understand that:

1) Most edge lit (LED) LCD panels exhibit some form of banding.
2) The UN65ES8000 is most susceptible to the banding problem.
3) Continuing to swap out panels may not provide any better result - and perhaps worse - witness the 7 swaps Cmay did just to end up with a Sony...

Can you guys help answer the following and give me some advice:

1) On a scale of 1-10 how bad do you think the banding looks compared to others of this model (the 65" specifically) you've seen (can you point me to some pictures on the forum)?
2) Would you risk another swap at this point? or would you keep it?
3) Would you consider waiting for the F8000 series? Any evidence that the banding issues have been resolved on the new line (specifically the 65")? (Any ideas on price and availability?) [not sure what I'd do without a TV for 60 days...hmmm]

Many thanks in advance for all the great advice and feedback you all have provided.

I actually have a Logitech Harmony and its what I use anyway, but I still use the ES8000 remote to change picture settings etc because I am still tinkering with brightness, color etc. it's just weird that the IR blaster is supposed to make things easier, yet it doesn't seem to mange it.

Unless your camera is making the banding look worse than it is, I think the banding on your panel is pretty atrocious. I don't think there is any scenario where that amount of banding wouldn't be visible at least 30% of the time in normal viewing. Your banding looks to be considerably worse than the banding I had on my returned 65".
Ok, more banding talk. You all might recall that I had horrible banding on my 65" ES8000. I reported that my 60" had zero banding, and for the most part that is still true. But here is the funny thing... In GAME mode on my 60" with all the picture trickery turned off and a fairly high backlight and brightness, on an all black screen with the backlight shining through can actually make out a hint of vertical banding !!!! I have NEVER seen it in normal viewing, gaming, TV, test picture so it's not at all an issue... But the bands are there in the 60" somewhere even if its barely visible and only with a strong backlight and black screen in game mode. If I turn my HDMI black level to LOW or adjust the backlight down (my game settings are blindingly bright on purpose) I don't see it at all. So bolts comments r.e. banding on all backlit panels may ring true.

I don't want this to put anyone off buying the 60" panel.. As I said, can't see banding in normal use at all, whereas on the 65" it really stood out in normal viewing.

Usually this Alternative setting is greyed out, so when I saw it wasn't today, I tried it and it worked.

Yes that worked for me too.

Cmay, congrats on a TV you like!

Jestered, congrats on your repair and thanks so much for the pictures and info. Great idea asking all those questions!

Colored ABCD Buttons: I got upgraded my Harmony 700 with ABCD buttons to a 900 with ABCD buttons because a lot of gear use them now, including my DirecTV DVR. The 900 also has RF capability and comes with IR blasters. Love it.

Apple TV: Yes you'll see a huge difference in the 1080p of the 3 compared to the 720p of the 2.

Banding: I've seen much worse here so if you say you can't see it on the tea pic and not in normal viewing, I'm going to guess your pictures look worse than it does in person and say you may not get a better one. Hard to say though.

Hey Sabesh...
I'm slumming it over here with: Samsung BDe6500 Bluray player, Samsung HW-e450 Sound bar with bluetooth subwoofer, Toshiba HD A30 HighDef dvd, player Sony SLV-N700 vcr, Monster Cable HTS-5000 power management and FIOS Motorola QIP72161 dvr ...

To all the 8000 bro's:

Issues and owner experience to Revisit: Okay, although I see a few positive statemenys, I am still on FW 1013 and not budging...HSO1 panel built may 2012...I will need to see a flood of posts from multiple forums before I run an upgrade or even add the Evo. I am 100% satisfied with my 8000. I definately think issues have diminished with usage. I'm as picky a sthe next guy trust me...I will keep lite tabs on development as I have no desire to upgrade my main tv for another 4plus years so OLED or whatever...i'll patiently sit on the sidelines and read with amusemnt about 10k to 30k panels with the next greatest picture. I've never seen a tv in a home or a store that performs better than the one in my family room.

The only upgrade i'll do in the next 1 to 3 add a mid to hi end soundbar & sub such as DefTech.

Banding: Still have never seen any on my 60" panel no matter what source is thrown at it. I dont care what slide and what setting anybody says they could use to expose it...it wont happen on my panel, not on "my watch" ! smile.gif

Clouding: I saw this maybe 3 times back in August when in movie mode and not since.

Flashlighting: I have to struggle to see even a hint of it in standard mode with my theater lighting on. Zero when ambient lighting is on. Micro-minimal in pitch black room...Source material would be Harry Potter and Seven type material. Flashlight on lower left corner on letterbox very tolerable. 3D is where i'll see it most but i dont notice it much at all

Settings: Best setting so far has to be Standard for me with bright set at 46 to stop the micro-dimming. Stars in space on Star Wars intro remain bright as intro story fade from view, same in Fifth Element. No crush or loss of detail in blacks as i've gone back and forth with Movie mode to compare. I used to think whites bloomed at times on football jerseys but that only happened on some NFL broadcasts, not consistent at all so I'll write that off to source. Bluray whites and darks are perfect at my settings.

AMP: discussed, all opinions vary and thats good. I love standard amp, rarely switch to clear. Rarely do i get a frame drop or stutter that bothers me but the effect of realism is so call..I could give a sh*t as to what any director intended... I only care and love what the 8000 intended, thats why i bought it.

Color: I always read that movie mode allowed the best tweaking of color. I find that in Standard mode, Native color dialed back to 48-49 is the richest color without cartooning any of my material.

Streaming: I cant say enough how seamless and smooth its been using my Samsung BDe6500 for all the convergence heavy lifting. That way it keeps all the crap away from the video brain, lets the 8000 use 100% of its muscle on the processing the picture while the player carries the load for the Smart Hub. I've had no problems with the hub after doing 2 FW upgrades at least

Thanks.

Bladerunner1959 - Nice setup!

I understand your hesitance on firmware updates. But I decided to go with the releases as they come out and I can say this about the latest 1046 update - - much less dimming in "Standard" mode. In fact, the torture test for me is movie credits - - and for the first time, the screen does not go dark on me. - - and this is with Brightness at 40. I have also noticed it on movies - - especially dark ones like Sherlock Holmes or the Harry Potter series. Much more detail.

I do not know if anyone else has experienced this with the 1046 update (Anthony did mention he saw something but still confirming) - - but it has made a noticeable difference on my 65" set. FWIW.
Great to see you Garnoch! We finally got that update you were talking about.

About that update, I definitely notice a slight improvement on my 65", but on my 60" is see more of an improvement. Everything looks more vibrant then before on my 60" panel and the picture just looks better. Also I've always used the "movie" setting on both sets, but after this update, Standard just looks better. It also seems to be brighter now too.

Blade,
I'm wondering if you don't get any studder with AMP on standard because your still on the older FW? I tried putting the AMP on standard after this update and I still get it on all sources.

Btw, I love Definitive Tech speakers. I actually just bought the 8060 center with the sub in it and its freaking amazing!

A couple comments on the AMP stutter I get. First, I don't get stutter on Clear, as others are also reporting. I see what looks like frame drop every 10-20 seconds on any custom setting. I don't use Standard or Smooth, so I can't comment on them. Now the strange part, I only see the stutter on 1080p60 material. I've verified it from multiple devices, and the same 1080p60 material has no AMP stutter at all on my nearly 4 year old 52B750. I get no stutter with 1080p24 AT ALL. I had all if this behavior on firmware 1041, and it is all the same on 1046. I have a 55ES8000. I have not noticed any of these issues on my father's 65ES8000.

I had concerns that Clear, although it has no stutter, might produce motion artifacts. I have noticed this as flickering and wavering buildings in the opening shot of The Dark Knight when AMP is set to high on other Samsung LCD's. I'm very happy to report that I don't see these artifacts on my 8000 with AMP set to Clear. So, I'll be keeping my set. Everything else with it seems to be flawless. The panel is superior to that in my 52B750, which exhibits chroma up sampling issues. No such problem in my 8000.

Ah meant to say AMP Off and Clear are perfect for me but I only seem to get the skipped frames with 24p material.

Also, I'll test the update more this weekend, but noting stands out to me as looking different.

It's so hard to judge banding in photos posted online. I wouldn't have ever noticed banding at all if I hadn't been on this forum. I don't think I really notice it on my set. I never mess with those goofy test slides either. I just saw "flashlighting" for the first time on Finding Nemo 3D, the scene that's totally black that then has a light coming at you in the middle. In the corners for like 15 seconds. So if you don't notice anything watching your stuff I wouldn't send it back. Supposedly it's inherent in the LED technology, which is superior to plasma for most everyday viewing situations. I'm very happy with my set and everyone who looks at it thinks it's awesome.
