So as I am dying over this GT50 not being everything you are telling me prices are coming down on the ES8000, the lastest updated firmware is awesome and they have some kit that will make it better (maybe?)?

Yeah, the only issue I have had was the V and a some minor flashlighting, which now are gone. Unless the next update makes coffee for me or something along that line, I'll be sitting tight for a while with this version.

I have not viewed any 3D content since the last update, but that will be my next and final test with this version.

No I have the GT and Sony. Considering the Samsung or waiting for new models. At this point i don't even care about the money. I just want a problem free TV with a great picture. A TV should not add stress to life:)

That's a great idea! I haven't checked the 3D either yet since this update.

hey guys, so i took the plunge and updated my 65" last night, didn't really do any video tests, and i just did the system reset like others have suggested. the reset was done after the update, so i thought the reset would put me back to the original fw-but it did not, cuz it didn't show any fw updates when i go into support. is there anyway to check what version of fw i am on? i've only watched a little bit of tv last night, but i honestly think movie mode was more comfortable to the eye as compared to standard. previously i was using garnoch's standard settings, and i was fine with it. should i reset the tv and re-do something? any inputs appreciated.

Go into Contact Samsung and there it will show your exact firmware. Now that you've reset everything (I never have but am planning to to test the current defaults), you can put your preferred setting back in. Good luck!

The SmartView app works great on my Samsung Galaxy II phone, but not so well on my Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet. All of the remote functions work, however the shared "view" part of the app does not function.

My tablet is using Jelly Bean (It didn't work with Ice Cream Sandwich either)

Its 65 es. On the test picture of the beach, the banding is really hard to see. It much better than the prior model that i had but im getting a little bit of flashligh and cloudy center. I hope it will go away.

I notice after the new firmware, my viewing angle is a little better too.

Anthony - do you still have a D8000? I noticed the viewing angle on my brother's D8000 was much better than my ES8000. I did notice a better viewing angle after the update, but I don't think it rivals the D series.

Having only owned plasma's prior to the ES8000, I would say that the viewing angle is "pretty bad". Our couch is 9ft wide and maybe 11-12ft away from the TV. If I sit on the far end of the couch I can clearly see that the far half of the TV looks different than the near half. This is particularly distracting on 21:9 movies because the black bars on the far side of the TV are slightly lighter than near side. Just another one of those things that slightly bugs me but my wife looks at me like I am crazy when I point it out rolleyes.gif

The sweet spot is maybe 30 degrees wide I would guess?

I sure don't miss the glare on my old Panasonic plasma though when watching football during the day on weekends!!!

Curious though, how you go the app installed on your Galaxy Note 2 phone? Simply from the play store? Both the standard and tab versions of the app are listed as incompatible with my phone (SCH-I605).

I am really surprised at how much of a difference I have noticed since this last update. Previous updates have been ok, but I always wondered if my perception of changes was based on the fact that I wanted to see a difference. With this update, I DEFINITELY see a difference, and I am loving it!

Yeah I definitely noticed a difference too. I'm thinking we are on the same update as the UK users - because after their last update they were saying a lot of the same things as we are. One of them even said normal cable/satellite television had a bluray like quality to it now. At times it seems like it. And the main thing to me is that blacks do seem better

It seems like their picture processing algorithms have seen a major improvement/overhaul. I'm sure this relates to micro dimming as well. I believe they probably went back to the drawing board when designing the 2013 series, and pushed the improvements to us via the software update. I was thinking we would have to wait until the Evo kit to even be able to see this kind of benefit via a software & hardware upgrade, but luckily that's not the case. Perhaps we will benefit even further once the kit's released and our horse has a little more giddyup

To confirm, those seeing a noticeable difference in Standard mode with Micro Dimming after the update, is that with the default settings or after plugging yours back in?

It looks like we really may benifit from this kit. I know I've said this before, but since I was at the show last year and saw these in person and saw the 75" as the ES8000 and not the 9000 which has the Cinema Black, could it be possible that Samsung has taken this setting out of our TVs, or made it very hidden? I always felt like this could be a possibility after I saw them change the 75" into a 9000 after CES so they can charge more money from this having the "Smart LED" and "Cinema Black" features.

I also heard that its the "Smart LED" that's the hardware and the "Cinema Black" that's their software. If this is true, that means that they can add Cinema black to our sets through a Firmware Update. Especially if its software based as I heard it was. I know they cant add hardware from a simple update, but if Sony can add 3D to a aging old playstation player, then Samsung can add this feature also so long as its software right? After this last update, my letter box bars look just like my D8000. You can really see how the top and bottom is dimmed very well now, which makes me thing that they could have just hid this black feature so they have something that makes the ES8000 and ES9000 a little different besides screen size. Hmm!

Edit. I meant they cannot add hardware through a FW update..

Hey man,

I do still have the D8000, but I haven't seen them in a while since they are in a different state where my place is. I remember it having not so good viewing angles though. I think the only types of LED panels that have better viewing angles, are the ones that use VA or IPS panels. But usually those panels don't have the "inky" black levels that we have. I think I'd rather have better black levels and just sit in the sweet spot then have lighter levels with a better angle.

That's with the Default settings and then tweaked from there. I noticed that having the color space on "Auto" helps with the red tones on cable. And also I have to use standard now instead of Warm 1 or warm 2 because of the red tones.

I thought of some thing for all the people that really want this kit to Improve picture quality. The best place to be heard about this and other issues is their Facebook page. I noticed that a lot of people are making fun of them saying its "timeless" etc.. This is where they will see what we as the consumers want. Maybe even mentioning on there about the price we think we should have to pay will help? This seems to be the place to voice opinions and suggestions for their products in order to be heard.

I see what you're saying but as of this date and multiple releases no Samsung tv without edge lit local dimming has received this feature. The ES9000 75" has edge lit local dimming. Both it and the F8000 have a feature called Precision Black Local Dimming & Cinema Black (both hardware features). The ES9000 description on the Amazon page says this:

Precision Black Local Dimming
By dimming the LEDs behind dark areas of the picture, blacks become darker without affecting the brighter elements of the picture.

Micro Dimming Ultimate
By scanning zones across the image and adjusting the brightness for each individual zone, the "halo" effect and image distortion caused by diffused lights are eliminated. The Ultimate version of this technology optimizes the quality by scanning twice the number of zones in the image, creating an even more crystal-clear picture with vivid detail and color reproduction

Samsung talks about these two things: MDUltimate (software) & Precision Black (hardware) working in tandem to dim specific zones of the screen. But note the distinct difference made between software and hardware and the amount of zones they are claiming they dim. They are not saying that the hardware edge dimming actually adds that many zones - that's because it doesn't. It's not that big of a deal

And as far as Cinema Black goes think about this: If they could dim the letterbox bars more on our sets via software wouldn't they already have? Sure, they could improve blacks on our sets as a whole (last update seemed to do this). And they could go so far as to add an option to the menu for Cinema Black to satisfy everyone but it just wouldn't mean anything as Micro Dimming is already doing all that it currently can. So if the kit adds more processing power which results in better software algorithms and deeper blacks - it will be possible that those letterbox bars will be blacker but it wouldn't require an option in the menu and wouldn't be the same as turning off the led's via hardware dimming

Those of us with 2012 sets need to just move on from this feature and push for deeper blacks if anything

i use the browser from the hub to surf, via wireless keyboard and mouse and love it. My smart hub is superfast since the last update, has anyone else notice this?

I'm getting an evo kit as soon as they're available, i find the browser very easy to use and i like the PIP option.

Nice find! Free in the US for the first week, thanks!

Also, there was another update for Samsung's iOS remote SmartView app today. After a year with no updates, it's nice to see three so far in the past month.

I agree.. I see that this update for the "Smart View" app has a screen to the right. It looks like apple devices may soon get the "Dual View" feature that the Samsung devices have.

How much is that THX app going to be? I can't find any info on that

I just used this THX app for my E8000 plasma and it really works. I got great results. I'm about to do my 65" LED next. I just noticed that you have the Galaxy nexus. Is your with Verizon? I have this too and it sucks that we can't download the Samsung "Smart View" app to it, or the Samsung App Store. You would think because its a Samsung phone and considered to be one of the better phones, we would be able to download these Apps to it.
Ah crap, I'll have to check it out more to see how good it is before using it. It doesn't support AirPlay so you need to buy an iOS HDMI connection.

Not sure how much, I can't find it easier.

The Samsung app works well and does come in handy - for me, mainly just for accessing menus with my Harmony is in a different mode.
Precision black local dimming is NOT the same thing as cinema black. As far as I know, precision black involves active dimming of the LEDs depending on the content on the screen, whereas cinema black is a dummy turn off of the LEDs in the top and bottom.
