Getting somewhat smart that I am having Amazon deliver the new and keeping the old to compare the two, then I call back and decide which one to return...the lesser of two evils...

Yes - I have a delay as well while the TV "understands" the format of the feed it is getting and displays. I'll experiment whether I think the TV is doing a better job than the box at scaling. If it is, I'll keep it and suffer the pause between channels (don't surf so much as select from the onscreen guide, so it will be less annoying than when surfing). If no difference (or worse quality), I'll just go back to the box scaling everything to 1080p before it gets to the TV.

I was just at Bjs whosale club and they had the sharp 80" for only $3,200. It looked very good. I was surprised. It was really bright too. The only thing that wasn't so good, that's really good on our sets is the sharpness and clarity of the picture. But from a distance it looked very good. I was surprised how cheap it is. I paid $3,500 for my 65" and this is an 80" for less. You would think since they are called "Sharp" that their TVs would be very sharp, right? Not the case though

That box in the upper corner is showing the format of the source that the TV is receiving. The TV is a 1080p display so everything - absolutely everything - it displays is displayed as 1080p.

The only issue is whether the TV (or other components) need to modify the source material to get it to 1080p. For example, blu-rays are already in 1080p -- your blu-ray player sends a 1080p signal to the TV via HDMI and the TV displays it. But most broadcast, whether cable, satellite, etc., is in 720p or 1080i (HD material), or 480i (standard definition). With a 1080p panel, something has to convert the native signal to a 1080p format so it can be displayed. Either one of your components does so, or the TV will do so. I had previously had my Comcast box scaling the native source to 1080p and outputting to the TV - so the TV didn't do anything in terms of scaling - it just displayed the (already scaled) 1080p signal it got from the Comcast box. With the box sent to native, the TV is now receiving a variety of different signals -- for example, an SD feed is getting to the TV as 480i, Fox Soccer HD is getting there as 720p, and USA HD is getting there as 1080i. The TV (instead of the Comcast box) is scaling the signal to 1080p.

The question is whether the TV does a better job of the necessary scaling, or the Comcast box. I generally share the presumption with Jestered that the TV is likely to do a better job of the necessary scaling than the Comcast box, so I'll have the TV do it unless I find otherwise.

And the reason for this, Newt, is because the TV literally has 1,080 pixels from top to bottom. It's a physical trait so anything it's displaying is 1080p, 1920x1080, or else it wouldn't fill the screen. Hell, even things that appear to not fill the screen is still upconverted to 1080p technically, but that includes the black bars (like a letterbox movie on an SD channel with black all the way around).

That's so odd. And you said it's on more than one TV so I assume it's more than one Foxtel box. If it were just one box, I'd think it was hardware. Is it all channels? If so, hopefully Foxtel's service can help you out and maybe there is a setting somewhere or new hardware they can send you that will fix the issue. In the mean time, if it's driving you crazy, you could change the ES picture size from Screen Fit to 16x9. It will zoom the picture in slightly. The downside is losing some resolution and the edges of your picture. I can't tell from your picture though how close to the edge it is so this might not help - not that it's a permanent solution anyway. If you can, let us know the outcome in case anyone else come searching for this issue. Good luck.
