What do you guys think. Does it look better to you? It always helps having other eyes look.

Someone on here wanted to see Hockey. I think Hockey looks amazing on this set

Im adding two more pics. You can click on my Avatar to check them out if your interested. Just give me some time to do this..

hey guys how does mine look for banding now that i finally know what to look for

Thanks man.. I really don't like posting my settings because they are NOT settings that were professionally calibrated, but yes, I will write them down later when I have some time and near my sets and then post them. I want to note though that my 65" panel has very different settings from my 60" panel, so now I truly believe when people say every panel is different. I used to let that comment go in one ear and out the other, until I had 3 sets of the same TV with different sizes. Not I'm a true believer of that.

Do you own a Apple TV, or an iPhone, or even an iPad? I ask because I used the THX app to calibrate my sets. Its very easy to use and free for only a short time..
Kaos, what size panel is that? Is it the 65"?
yeah its a ua65es8000

Here's some info on the 2013 models. Please note, I won't be posting anymore links about the new sets here. There's another thread called Samsung F8000 gets Micro... That's where all the info will be posted from now on, so check there if your interested. Its too much work posting the same articles in both these threads..lol!

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ceag-announces-technology-comparison-between-led-and-plasma-tvs-top-tier-samsung-panasonic-and-lg-tvs-help-determine-pros-and-cons-for-each-technology-189773381.html

Kaos, I know of a awesome Guy that does this. His name is "Kevin Miller" look him up. He's amazing at what he does. Also. What SIZE is your TV? It must be the 65" with that banding because I've never seen banding that noticeable on the smaller sets.

I noticed on my test pics from before the update and after, that the banding on the left is the same as always, but the ones on the right are much better now after the update.

I've never heard any 55" with banding, Ive had my 55" for probably 8months and I dont think you could find a better set for hockey. Sharp, vivid, quick and smooth.

Hey Derek, good to see you back! How did you make out with your cable box?

++1
I agree man.. Everything just looks amazing now. the letter box bars are pitch black with absolutely NO flashlighting whatsoever! On all my panels!

My Kef model 7's are coming in today. Can't believe I got them for only $300 from Pauls TV.

I set it to output 720p. for now till I look into upgrading to the latest box that has "native". To be honest, the picture is face melting fantastic, I can't see how it could get any better. Blacks cant get any darker and using warm1 the whites are POPPIN.

I still havent tinkered with my wow disk since the 1046.2, I feel it needs some minor fiddleling. but I must say, 1046.2 is were the party"s at.

HAHA! Face Melting it really is! lol! blast from the past there..

Just took these. Whites are pure white, and blacks are black! and this was taken with a cheap cell phone

Derek,
Im not sure your missing out on anything by not having a box that outputs in "Native" here's my own experience, When I did this with mine, Every time there was a different signal, I got a delay. Meaning, the channels didn't change very smoothly. I ended up going back to 720p because of this

I figured with that banding you have. Hey, good luck with the calibrator. Ask as many questions as possible when he's there. Btw, are you the one with those Klipsch "Synergy" speakers?

Ya. like I said, I can't see how the picture can get any better. It's almost bluray quality from cable source. I'm happy as it is. Your pictures look nice

The good news is the hockey shot looks great, but the banding looks identical to me... But it could be because I know how to spot it and have vertical bands burned into my retinas.

It looks pretty bad on the beach test screen shots. Those bands are probably a disaster on panning shots.

Anthony, Garnoch and all the 8000 bro's... You all know I got my set in June with FW 1013.2 and stayed firm in not updating. I was 100% satisfied and loved my settings. Tolerated the minor flashlighting, but had no V issue or clouding to speak of. Well, the worm has turned.

1046.2 is the T*Ts!!!!...The bomb!...."its where the party's at"

I use hdmi direct to tv for bluray, fios and hdvdvd source. Optical out to my soundbar. Test material on bluray was Lawrence of Arabia, Revenge of the Sith, Fifth Element and Casablanca. Fios was CNN and a boatload of channel surfing. Results....Call me crazy but I'm with you guys!!!

-ZERO flashlighting...zero, nada, NONE!
-Blacker blacks in source material as well as letter box bars...I'm convinced this unit is WAY more software based and I'll side with people who think Cinema Black may have been switched on.
-Deeper better colors, especially in detail of red, orange and fuscia garments....OMG...
-CE dimming, much more tamed as I am at 45 brightness and the stars stay pretty bright as credits dissapear in StarWars

I'm rolling in Standard Mode. all 3 hdmi sources individually got the "reset" before tweak city.
-11 for Backlight althiugh this may be dialed vack to 10 cuz panel seems brighter now...
-97 Contrast
-45 Brightness
-12-15 for Sharpness although needs observation since the update really sharpened up an already sharp image...wow
-50 Color...amazing and may need to dial back to 48 or 49 after I finish my acid trip with the Sammy
-Dynamic Con, Black tone, Flesh tone, OFF
-Native Color space...love this
-OFF for gamma
-Motion Light ON
-Color Tone is Warm1 but Standard is much richer now as well and it wouldnt surpise me if i switch back and forth...white does look white on my Warm1 when looking at white "BMW's and Benz's" smile.gif or white business shirts on CNN and football jersey's
-AMP is on...game effing on babay however, clear is a 2nd choice
-LED Motion OFF

LOVE THIS UPDATE, loved my TV before it, loving it even more after the FW update to 1046.2. Yes, all...the ".2" will show when you check the "Connect with Samsung" window.

Anthony...you called this one spot on!!!

All kidding aside, the recent update does appear to have improved black levels according to a few of the posters... but don't expect Samsungs to be flashlight free. With any edge lit set, a combination of viewing conditions and source material can cause this issue. We're you watching in complete darkness? Was the source material dark to begin with? Hockey generally is not an LED tvs friend to begin with due to various uniformity, banding, DSE issues that typically show up to varying degrees on any brand, make or model.

i don't know about everyone out there, but i find hockey way better on LED than plasma. the auto dimming on plasma kills it for me and i don't see any banding on my set.

Anthony5362 and kaosx77:

Thanks for posting the shots of your 65"s and the banding issues.

I would say that the banding is pretty hard to see on the Samsung Picture Test screen.

The best way to really see it is to hook up your laptop or another source and output a full screen of 50% gray. If you don't have a laptop you can hook up, search YouTube on SmartHub for "banding test" or "dead pixel test" - at least one of those videos will have a full white screen (harder to see the banding, but still better visibility than the Samsung Picture Test) or a gray screen. Again, the best test is the 50% gray (or you can even go a little darker - say 65% gray). By the way, the easiest way to output the gray screen is to set your desktop background to that color and output to the TV.

Anyhow, I would be very curious to see the results of the gray screen on your sets if you can post some more pictures it would be appreciated.

In an effort to out-do Cmay, my fourth (#4) set will be delivered this week. This time Amazon is letting me keep the current one in the house to do a comparison and then send back the lesser of the two evils.

I'll post side-by-side pictures once I get #4....
PS - appreciate the info on the F8500, but don't prefer the design to either the F8000 released at CES or the current UNES8000 - it looks like it is smiling at me, also the cabinet/stand at the bottom makes it look like a thicker bezel...

Thanks bro! Seriously, my freaking 70+ old grandmother noticed this right after I did the reset. And that was with the factory default settings! No, I don't recommend keeping them though. I mean I know she's old, but for her to notice right away should say something. I truly believe we are all now benefiting from buying the ES8000 over the ES7500 I rest my case now..lol!

Kaos, In order to get Samsung to fix or replace your panel, you need to get a really nice service tech out to you. Can you still return it? Where did you buy it and how long ago? Because you shouldn't get it calibrated right away. It needs like 200 hours on it first I heard. The other thing is, say Samsung does replace it or replace the panel, you may get one that's even worse. Really, the only option right now for a 65" is to return it and wait for the F8000 to see if they fixed the banding. Or, go with the 60" like I did for my other TV.

Btw, I love the look of those Klipsch! How do they sound though? Are they good for a large room?

It does look good on, but when the TVs off..lol! Hey, whatever you like man. I turned mine off completely on one of my sets so it wouldn't use power 24x7. I'm so OCD that I thought if I keep it off, it would prolong its lifespan. But once it was off, I couldn't tell if the TV was on or off for the life of me, so now I just keep the logo on while the TVs off so I know its off.

Hey, I added my cars to my pictures. Just click on my avatar. You can add any pics you want on yours too. I'm curious to see your CLS. Did you do trick it out at all? Tricking out cars is my number one hobby. Cars period actually. Even my grandmother loves sport cars with tinted windows and chrome wheels..lol

All three, haha no. We're an Infiniti family. He meant cool wife. He knows first hand wink.gif
