So I pulled the trigger today and exchanged my 65" VT50 for the 60ES8000. Get's delivered Wed. Magnolia dude said that the 65" won't be available until end of July beginning of Aug. I sure hope it's within my 45 day return period so I can trade back to a 65"...

Nitra,

Is it necessary to break in the TV? Run slides? What settings should I change immediately to prevent ghosting/flash-lighting?
Sorry if this has already been covered but I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on UN60ES8000. The wife gave me the Ok to buy a new TV. smile.gif

How's gaming on this TV? I was wondering if this tv shows the soap opera effect? if yes, can anything be done to correct that issue.

Thanks advance.

I've not used it.
I use the SpectraCal kits.
You can rent them or buy them here, http://store.spectracal.com/consumer/rent.html

Run slides, no, not at all, the issues generally fade somewhere between week 3 and 6 depending on usage. Some issues are more extreme than others, but you can immediately drop the backlight to 13, enable the ECO sensor, set it to bottom out at 4 or 5.
When the room is bright, the tv will automagically raise the backlight level, when it's dark, it will dim it. You might find that with some movies and darkly filmed content that 4 is slightly too low, but I've only seen that once. I keep mine on 4, and click it up a notch if needed. Keep in mind, if you adjust the backlight level, you will need to re-enable the ECO sensor.

Here's my recent ISF calibration numbers for the TS01 panel, http://www.avsforum.com/t/1399319/official-samsung-unxxes8000-thread/1050#post_22115441

Gaming on this set is far above last years models, I've not needed to enable "Game" mode yet to compensate for input lag, even playing very dark games (Arkham City) the TV was flawless, the soap opera wasn't noticeable, in fact the image is much more crisp and detailed.
I game with Game mode on with some minor tweaks to the settings. I think it looks great. I play a lot of First person shooters such as Call of Duty and Battlefield 3. There is some noticeable input lag when not in game mode. Game mode on factory settings looks like crap. You will have to bring the sharpness and contrast down a bit. I keep my back light at 10 sharpness at 35 and contrast at 75 in game mode and it looks really good. I still would like some ISF calibrations for game mode. Nitra said he will get some Game mode calibrations up once he has his equipment back.

I hate the soap opera effect, and this can be avoided by going into the "auto motion plus" setting under picture options, and either turning it off completely, or setting it to custom and dropping the judder reduction to 0. The judder reduction is what creates the soap opera effect, or motion interpolation. All the presets under auto motion plus have it enabled to some degree - many say "clear" is the best setting but honestly even that exhibits some soap opera effect which I can't stand even slightly, so I just leave auto motion plus off - no soap opera effect. Motion is excellent and completely natural with it disabled.

I have seen the Panasonic VT50 plasma and while I really liked its black level I find that I prefer a much brighter image as produced by the LED LCD's. I currently have a Samsung 46" A650 and it has minor flashlighting. Does anyone have a ES8000 with zero flashlighting or is it just inherent to the technology and everyone has it to some degree? I'm looking to buy a new tv and can't decide whether to go for the dimmer VT50 plasma or take a chance with the brighter ES8000 and hope for no flashlighting.

Thanks for any advice,
Mike

They all have it, it's a factor of edge lighting.
That said, proper use of the backlight generally gets around most of it.

Nitra,

Thanks, I read your suggestions with how to deal with it so if I go with a ES8000 I will use your suggestions. I was just hoping it was just luck of the draw and you might get one with zero flashlighting. I know that you can get ones that are worse than others so I might try my luck and roll the dice.

Thanks again,
Mike

I had a ES7500 and two ES8000's (my first ES8000 had a dead pixel) All three had the same flash lighting and like Nitra said if you use his settings with the eco sensor you will not notice it. I will however say Clouding can be different from set to set. My first ES8000 had normal clouding and you could see it. My second one was a lot better with the clouding and you barely notice its there even with the back light set to 20. You can still see it a little but not like my first ES8000. If you pop Nitra's ISF Calibration settings in from page 36 the screen just pops with detail! I have not seen a set that looks as sharp and clear as the ES8000.

Hi Nitra,

Thank you so much for your invaluable contributions to this TV thread. Can you take a moment and explain to me how the panel changes during the first 2-6 weeks as far as the clouding and flashlight effects? Why would aging the panel 2-6 weeks make these issues go away? Isn't there just layers of plastic films inside? How would those change with use?

What causes clouding? Is it like Plasma IR?

Why would flashlighting or clouding be better or worse from set to set?

Thanks for your reply!

I may be entirely speaking from my ass here, so take it with a grain of salt.

What I've noticed in practice it seems the panels relax somewhat after a few weeks, I'm talking entirely LED/LCD here, plasmas have a different breakin that hardens the cells.
I don't entirely know if it's a settling of the LEDs or if it's related to the transportation of the panels, but sometime after week 3, the panels start to improve.
Over the past 4 years, I've seen about 20 Samsung panels all age like this. Also from what I've seen, panels that were laid flat on the front of the panel seem to be a little worse for the first few weeks. This alone makes me think that some of the contributing factors are shipping and movement.
Massaging the areas can help clouding, not flashlighting.

On my second ES8000 I did not lay the panel face down to put the stand on. I used two chairs with pillows on them and set each end on one chair and had my wife hold it there while I put the stand on. It was much harder but I didn't want to put the panel face down on the screen to do it. Maybe that is why my second set was much better.

The reason I did that was because I have heard many people say that laying the panel face down can cause clouding and scratching of the screen.
I've been asking a number of people that have serious clouding issues if they laid it flat, all of them have said yes.
But, those that did, say the clouding faded after a few weeks.

I didn't lay my ES8000 flat, I sat it on the ottoman, had my other half hold it upright while I attached the wall mounts.
To the best of my knowledge, my set never laid flat.
I'll make sure that BB delivery guys don't lay it down. They shouldn't have to on a 60" since the stand is already attached right?
I'm not sure.
I laid mien down flat when I screwed in teh stand and I don't see any clouding and/or flashlighting, even at 15.

My old d8k, that's another story.
My set was not laid down flat, I was here when they set up the tv, and they kept it vertical at all times. Of course, we don't know how the boxes are treated in the trucks to and from the warehouse. My panel has fairly noticeable clouding, but very little flashlighting. I wish there was less clouding. Backlight is currently on 8.
Side note;

I'm not sure if it's firmware issue or what, but from time to time clouding is a lot worse, rebooting the TV or swapping modes for a little while seems to put it into a slightly different mode.
It's like night and day, I've observed it 3 times now, no will, no reason, but after swapping modes, or giving it a day, it's non-existent.
Since the last firmware update it’s happening much less, that makes me believe it’s something with the firmware.

If you happen to notice suddenly there’s a pronounced cloud, or a couple of them, reboot the TV, swap modes a couple of times, it will go away.

Thanks Gasoline....it's tough deciding since I like the brightness of the Samsung ES8000's but I really appreciate the black level and non-flashlighting or clouding issues of the Panasonic VT50's. I guess it's all compromises and picking what's important to you and maybe a little luck also.

I just picked up an open box 60ES8000 at Magnolia, it was marked as having no missing parts. Don't you know that the one thing that is missing is the power cord. WTF. From the receptacle on the back of the display it looks like a standard IEC C7 type plug. Can anyone confirm that? I'm going to roll into Mag. tomorrow to see if I can scare one up, but in case I need to look elsewhere...

Thanks,

Mat

Care to share how much you paid for it?
I think pricing talk is frowned upon, but lets say about 10% off the standard price, if you were to say, find one floating along LARGE RIVER somewhere. After checking online and calling the store to verify that they had one in stock, I get there to discover the only one they had was open. After hemming and hawing a bit I decide to go for it. Needless to say not too happy that it's missing a critical component. Especially after specifically asking if it had been checked for all accessories and was told none were missing.

My 60 es8000 delivered this past saturday: In a word...."AMAZING" and better than I expected. Second only to the Elite which I have no problem with considering the cost difference equals a cruise, jetski and dive excursions.

-Pic quality is maginificent and I only did basic tweaks from std mode to correct white and black detail
-menus are awesome
-the hardware itself is the sexiest on the planet equal to the new LG which only offers 55" max i think
-mounted frame to it while in table top stand on table, easy process to mount to arm with assistance from wife
-WAF, she has always been reluctant to admit upgrade benefits but she is IN LOVE with MY tv this time
-my kids are completely stunned from the moment they walked in and saw Avatar blu as the first test disk during system setup
-SMART functions have not yet been setup ...TBD but i'm sure they will satisfy me
-3D, now i am a fan due to the hi-quality 3d i get from bluray and FIOS on-demand...4 glasses included...sweet

I have been calbrating since 96 from 35" Sony crt, 60" Toshiba Cinema series RPTV, 60" Sony rp LCD and now this....It's hometheater heaven for me and frankly I really do like the SOE alot more than others cuz it puts such a crazy vivid real touch to things at times....I have morphed from purist to just wanting some amazing entertainment action....titles such as Fifth Element, Bridge too Far, all Star Wars, LOTR.....OMG this fuggin amazing fun!!!!

I appreciate all the video and smart feature tweaks and hints that you all provide and will enjoy, slowly playing with, them going forward.

Is the es8000 any better than the es7500. I like the black border on the es7500 better than the shinny border on the 8000. I also like the swivel stand that comes with the es7500. The es7500 is available at my local bestbuy and I have to order the es8000.
Yes, it's better, but if you prefer the looks/stand of the other model, get it.
