At least they are on the same page mine is being replaced also.......

I hear that:-)

I was able to downgrade with my 46A750 using a USB stick and the firmware I wanted to install. Has anyone tried?

I bought the UN65ES8000 on March 18 2013, the unit was purchased from Best Buy along with the extended warranty (4 years). Since March 22 I have noticed vertical banding no matter what the source is. I contacted samsung first via online chat and they have booked a technician to come out this afternoon. I was wondering if it is worth having this unit fixed or should I just return it. An interesting note was during the online chat the samsung rep indicated that the problem would not be covered by samsung warranty if I took the unit back to the store even when I explained the BB service plan has nothing to do with samsung. Just wondering what I should do?

I have a screen shot of the chat window to prove what they said.

Just read backwards through the thread. Everything you ever wanted to know about vertical banding and the 65ES8000 will be answered for you.

So I am on my 3rd 65es8000 all are the MH02. (Paid $2900) Returned the other 2 for flashlighting and verticle banding. I want a different tv but, what do I get. My local future shop has 1 brand new in box 65hx929. But he wants $3500 for a tv that was discontinued at the end of 2011. Hes not even sure how they got it. Otherwise for the 65hx950 he wants $4700. Which is way out of my price. Any other suggestions. Will be used as a computer monitor so plasma is out.

Try to talk him down on that 929.

Just remember, both the 65HX929 and 65HX950 will also have vertical banding to some degree, just not nearly as distracting as some of the 65ES000s. Seek out IMRIZZO over in either the HX929 or HX950 threads. He'll be able to tell you what the differences are between the two Sony's. Although.... I do believe the number of local dimming zones is identical, so the differences may just be the bells and whistles and post processing features, I'd double check with him.

Exactly. It seems to be the same as the previous update picture quality wise. A recent post in this thread suggests that measured black levels were the same as 1046, which only confirmed my initial thoughts about the update. A lot of updates have very little to nothing to do with PQ, and will be for the Smart features etc.
Just a quick update,

The samsung tech came out and agreed that the banding was excessive. He indicated that he would order me a new panel but after installing new panels in 5 other 65ES8000's it is likely the new panel will have the same problem and maybe worse. The told me that the problem is very common in edge lit LCD's as there are plastic dividers/mirrors running along the bottom of the TV frame that allow for local dimming and lead to the banding problem. I don't know if he was talking out of his ass or not. He told me the best thing to do was to return the TV and get a plasma TV or a full array LED LCD.

Nice one, did they try a panel swap or anything? What's the story?

They called me initially and said right off the bat that they were going to just give me back a refund and i said no way because i got a good price on mine ($1700) and if i go and buy back another one I'd have to pay more for it...I told them send me a replacement, he checked his inventory and had only one 8000F model showing..he put me on hold to check with the warehouse for a physical and came back and said it was gone...he said he had the authority to replace a equal or higher model...I told him (asking very nicely) to then put me down for a 9000 since I didn't trust the 8000 models anymore and since i live 5 hours north of nowhere I don't want have to exchange it again (even though they said they would send someone to deliver the new and pick up the old tv)...he said he will put me down on his 9000 list and to email him every couple days and when inventory comes in he'll arrange delivery....so in essence i'll get the new 9000 model for $1700 with a little patience...biggrin.gif

The ES9000 only came in a 75 inch size, and was a $10,000 MSRP TV. I highly doubt they upgraded your size and model, but congrats if they do!

Well I can only tell you what he told me... i would've been happy if he had the 8000F...i just threw the idea out there to him and he said ok and he'll put me on the list with some other people he has for the upgrade...so apparently i'm not the only one...

Well, the chances of getting upgraded from a 55 inch screen to a 75 inch screen, of a higher model super premium $10,000 TV seems HIGHLY unlikely. To be honest, if you came away with a 55F8000 Id still call that a huge win.

Goodluck though, let us know how it goes.

Samsung's new definition: mastering the art of delivering on Nightmares and Dreams...rolleyes.gif

I think you'll get the ES9000...good for you, swing for the fences with ECR, I say.

Back in 2008 I bought a display model flagship Samsung HT in a box, for $200 on clearance with a normal $1000 price.

The dvd player in the HT was defective and Samsung tried to repair, yet lacked parts.

I tried a long shot and asked for the Samsung HT-BD2T with Blu-ray player, 7.1 system that retailed at $2000 at the time.

Long story short, I received the HT-BD2T.

On the subject of 75" inch screens, let me put this out there: if the 75" F8000 is a little more reasonably priced than last years es9000, and does not have any problems with banding, is anyone else seriously eyeing these panels at the moment ? I know I sure am giving it some serious attention.

I am getting a new panel for my un55es8000 on Tuesday. So, is it essentially everything but the glass and stand?

The glass is part of the panel, there are two main boards behind the panel that stay.

Hmm, are there other boards that will be replaced with the new panel, if you know? I have the vertical strips on start up sometimes, by the way. That is why I am getting the new panel. Also, do you know if this will improve the PQ? My quality seems to have slipped recently, lots of artifacting in dark scenes, grainy picture....
Thanks for any answers..smile.gif

When the Samsung tech comes, he will first take the back panel off your current TV. He will remove the two main boards; power and processor, as well as the bluetooth dongle. That is pretty much all there is to these TVs. He will attach your old boards and bluetooth module to the back of the replacement panel.

You are therefore getting a new screen, bezel, camera, as it is all one piece. That said, when I had my panel replaced on my D8000, it was clearly a refurb panel as the bezel was scratched, so take a close look at it. It may or may not improve picture quality, as you are back in the panel lottery.

They may test and replace the main boards...the panel has its own processor board - so it may be the cause of your problem.

+1, This is why my A850 and D6900 were never fixed...refurbished panels.

I have my ES7100 set for repair and I specifically requested a new panel for this reason.

Now I am told their is a "delay" in getting the panel...its OK, I'd rather exchange for a F8000 even if I have to pay more.

Has anyone seen Zero Dark Thirty on the 8000? It may be the sharpest most detailed movie yet and just on the heels of SkyFall. Wow... Great stuff on deck for when we take a break from tweaking and tweeting! smile.gif

Been playing with my meter and CalMAN this morning. No matter I what I do, I cant get movie mode to look as good to my eye as Standard mode. There is just a crispness/clearness to the picture in standard mode that I cant get in Movie mode.

The main problem with standard mode, is that my gamma falls apart at the low end. If you use the green offset to boost up the gamma, if you go above 25 for green offset, you start to get significant detriment to the black levels even if you raise the red and blue to compensate.

Taking a break to watch some basketball but will play some more later. I will take some standard/standard readings today for the blue freaks :P
