OuggaBooga, i have to agree mostly to "Generally speaking >> sony is over priced & nolonger the "leader" like they used to be when they had the trinitron"

I had a 27" sony trin in 91, 35"xbr in 97-02, 60" xbr rpLCD in 05-12... I had to ween myself off the koolaid and Sony is def overpriced and easily NOT the best PQ for dollar value.

I looked at everything last May and imho it was easily the choice and identifiable that the un60es8000 was the best pic of all under 7k AND i was not sold that overall it wasnt the better viewing experience than the Elite.

In the end i had forced all best buy sales people to move every tv i was considering into the magnolia room...i had my own bluray player and demo discs in my arms for easy hookup making it very easy to filter out the sales pitch.

10 months in with my ES and i am still on that honeymoon.

My wfe and I decided to buy a tv this year in August. We came up with the budget of $2300.00, I have seen the newer models in this series and come to the realization I would never get this great of a tv. Today I was strolling bestbuy and they have this in the 60 inch version for $2300! I'm so tempted to put it on my credit card and then just paying it off in August.

I have thought of all the counter arguments my wife might bring up

1. We are going to be paying finance fees untill this is paid off in August! ($60.00 she is so anti interest fees).

However I will be getting getting $40.00 in rewards points and $115.00 in cash back points.

What do you guys think wait till August and hope the newer versions are dropped? I'm sure the only reason this is at this price is because its last years model

Opinions?

For the record, right now I'm not planning on getting the Evo Kit - based on price to features. The price seems a little steep for getting no picture enhancements. Maybe I'll look into the next one. I will be reading the reviews though before I fully decide. I'll also be quietly updating my settings here on page 117 as well as on the spreadsheet after updates are released. Keep up the great work, guys!

Great to see you! I will check out your quiet settings :-)

If you have a Frys near you, they have the 60ES8000 for $1997 today, or look a few posts back and you can get the 55 for $1599 from PaulsTV

Mavinwow just showed the 55 for 1600.00 a couple of pages back. Do you have to Go 60" if you do I think you can get BB to deal a little on that price.
Sorry Mavinwow must of been typing at the same time.

Snoopy10..i just answered that..." i looked at everything last May and imho it was easily the choice and identifiable that the un60es8000 was the best pic of all under 7k AND i was not sold that overall it wasnt the better viewing experience than the Elite.

I paid 2700 after pricedrop match, plus a free soundbar and a new vacumn cleaner from Hhgregg. I thought it was a steal then...pricing now is an easy decision...buy the ES, leave the wife, get your own cool crib, have two girl friends (1 for sports activities and one who digs tv and sex)... Pay off the tv in august as planned...and be careful NOT to call off sick from work too much just to watch tv.

...and dont overthink the whole process. At a minimum, this is a top 3 panel on the planet at this money...

10k- it doesn't sound like you did the reset after the FW update, so I'm wondering if that will make a difference. As you already know there's been a lot of talk about whether or not that makes a difference. I haven't updated the FW yet, but plan on doing that today. I'm going to perform a full reset and put the meter back on the tv to see if anything changes from doing the reset. I'll post my findings later.

When 1047 came out I upgraded and measured, and then the "full reset" discussions were happening so just out of curiosity I did a full reset and plugged my settings all back in again and remeasured........same results smile.gif

I think I posted about it but too lazy to find the posts. Looking fwd to your tests though.

I just updated my set from 1047 to 1048 and I checked the default Movie and Standard settings in both firmwares and I can confirm that they are exactly the same. As for 1048 with 10ks settings it looks just as good as 1047 or 1046 did.

Edit: I did a full reset on both btw.

I bumped up backlight to 16 for daytime viewing in my livingroom, which gets some sun, and the nba playoffs on abc look amazing. Loving it.

I didn't measure. 8 is 40ftl, which I use most of the time, and 5 (30ftl or so) for night viewing. I have 3 open windows opposite my tv and its a sunny day so I turned it up for the game. I would guess it is 55-65ftl at 16. I should have clarified that this is a one off thing smile.gif

Could someone explain to me, why we have to do a full reset after we update ?
I didn't and what's the advantage ? If we do exactly how do we do this full reset? The reason I ask this is that I have had Display's that in order to do any reset that would amount to anything, you had to do some weird things. Such as Hold down the menu and 5 button while unplugging from the wall. Wait 30 seconds then hold down the enter and return button while plugging back into the wall. Do we do this one just thru the User menu or what ?
Thanks,
Glen

Same for me. Night viewing with a few dimmed lights, I use backlight 5. Daytime, in a bright room, I could easily use a backlight of 20.

For night viewing, backlight 5 was combined with max contrast setting and increasing white balance gain, resulting in a peak white of 114cd/m2 or 33.3ftl. I don't have recent peak white measurement with backlight 15 or 20, but it is a lot!

Thank's Op's I got that one done but was just wondering if any other's .
Any body know the advantage of doing the reset after a update ? Is this something somebody decided we should do or what ?
My Question is WHY do we have to do a reset after updating if everything seems to be OK after a Update ?

I doubt that you do. It's a FW install. I own a lot of stuff that requires FW updates and this is the first I've heard of a "reset" requirement. Seems like an exercise in sock folding to me.

I was just wondering if this is something required, and if it is why. I have read this entire thread over the past few weeks and some people seem very sure this is required. There has to be some sort of substance to it, maybe someone can post or tell us this is from Samsung and why. I just wanted to know the rhyme or reasoning behind it. Some poster's are even asking if 10k reset before taking his readings or after, They would surely know why they ask this, I mean if it doesn't make a Flip why ask it.
Curious Mind.

The full reset is part of the placebo cocktail of magical picture improvements. If you are not having issues, no reason to do a full reset.

Any news anywhere about an Evolution kit upgrade for this set? Man, the F series TV, if I'm reading right, has a quad core processor. It would be real nice to get this set upraded to that. I have a bad feeling about this for some odd reason, like compatibility for this set being its a first generation Evolution set or something. Man I hope I'm wrong and just being paranoid.

Spreadsheet Default Settings Updated to 1048.4

I'm the guy who suggested we use a doc to organize people's settings and I posted the original default settings for my 65". These are the first 3 columns of settings in the spreadsheet.

Whenever there is new Firmware, I check default settings for Standard, Movie and Natural modes to see how they compare with the previous Firmware release. I can confirm that 99% of default settings from 1046.2 and 1047 remain the same in 1048.4. There is one difference as far as I can tell. The setting for 10p White Balance in Movie Mode was Greyed Out and Off in 1047 but is no longer Greyed Out in 1048.4. This should mean the Off setting can now be changed. Please correct if I got this wrong.

Regards to everyone,
Canadian

Corner Lights Burn In?

On my set, everytime I watched a 3D movie, four corner lights will be "showing". This is because the backlit was adjusted to 20 no matter what mode I'm in. But after switching back to 2D, there will be a period that I can see corner lights. It feels like the set takes a while to back to normal. Anyone has similar experience?

I've had three sets... all of them had this issue with 3D. I'm assuming it's a non adjustable setting outside of the backlight as even at maximum level in 2D the bleed isn't present. Not sure if it's been resolved in the F series...

All that setting does is map the colors, 0-255 vs. 16-235, i.e.: PC vs. TV color mapping. The TV has to anticipate which color feed you are sending it, which it will be expecting limited (16-235). To change it, the TV is then not showing the correct colors, and your blacks will look grey. You can manually change this by switching the HDMI Black setting in the TV however to compensate if you really wanted to.

You are in fact getting less colors with setting it low or limited. The TV will only be expecting 16-235 if you have HDMI set to low on your set. If either the TV or PS3 are set opposite you will get lag as the TV will need to convert the signal to whatever setting is enabled on your set.

Setting expanded on PS3 ( not entirely certain what the actual labeling is as I own an XBOX) and high on your TV will yield least amount of lag and best possible PQ.

I know you are right for the PS3, but for dvd/bluray/cable tv they use the limited range right?

There's a Full Reset somewhere it Settings I think. I also don't think it's neccessary to do it in order for the firmware features to take hold. That was the theoretical reason that someone recommended a Full Reset with every FW update: that you wouldn't in effect truly install the software without a quasi reboot (like a Microsoft update lol).
