I have demoed these sets in New York as the spring production showcase and they all seemed to work rather well. The voice activation does require you to speak clearly - and if the tv is in a noisy room, you can speak into the remote as it has this feature installed. The voice control did take a second or two , but it was still faster than typing in " cute kitten pictures" or faster than fumbling with remote looking for a channel. Let us all know how these features work for you. I am also, very interested on your opinion of the pq and any shortcomings you may observe.

Slreno,
Did you find out how to do the flashlight and grayscale test?
I have searched quite a bit with no luck.
TIA

There's NO way this is your set, man!!! That looks like the source file! I can't believe that a gray screen looks that good!!! Are you sure you didn't confuse which file you attached?

I need help, guys.

I've went through 4 Sony HX929 sets, and each was PLAGUED by uneven coloring (the right side was ALOT warmer than left).

I'm currently sitting on an LG 55LW7600 which gets the job done except for some horrendous flashlighting. The downside is that the set doesn't allow you to turn local dimming on while in Game Mode. Being a gamer primarily, you can see why this is a problem.

I really want to settle on the UNES8000, but I'm afraid after being absolutely burned by the D8000 in terms of uniformity.

I just want a gray screen that looks consistently gray. Here are my questions:

1) Does this set have the insane brighter left/right edges problem the D8000 had? It was so bad that in Uncharted, the dark blue sky was almost green/light blue on both sides of the set.

2) Can you activate Micro-dimming while in Game Mode? I don't care of mini outbreaks of flashlighting as long I can go into dimming mode...

3) I notice alot of people's white screens look a bit yellow/tinted on the right side. Does this translate to uneven colored screens?

Can more people PLEASE put up more gray (or any other solid color) screens? I really want to just FINALLY settle on a television!

Ya I'm not sure if I mixed up files when posting. I reposted a png image though which is more accurrate. This set is going back on Thursday due to a burnt out bright pixel. Regardless, here's an image of the banding:

Haha. No worries. Have you boxed your set already? If not, could you maybe take a shot of the gray screen again? I'm not too much concerned with flashlighting as I am with the brighter edges that plagued the UND8000.

Also, can you check to see if microdimming can be activated while in Game Mode?

*I should clarify: I want to see the dark gray image (one on right-side of the black-sides/white-middle photo). This color has been the bane of me in recent TV purchases.

Thanks!
I don't want to trouble you too much, but this is an awfully slow thread and I'm itching to pull the trigger on the set.

Odd but the edge lighting issue seems to have dissipated for all of us. The banding, however, is still an issue.
Can anyone tell me if the UN46ES8000 is 41" wide? I have a space issue and would like to know if this is the accurate width.

Thanks!
^^^According to Samsung's site it is 41.2" wide.
Samsung's website has 40.9. I really want to see if I can get someone that has the unit to measure the real width. I don't like to rely on websites. Thanks.

That's funny you mentioned the banding. I just wrote a lil rant in the D8000 thread. The 2 horizontal band lines that go across my TV while camera panning up & down in some movies, drives me nuts!! I've tried different calibrations and nothing helps. My room is dark so my backlight is between 8-10. Nothing helps! It's my only complaint with these Samsung sets
post #762 of 15253
Im no expert but having owned two tv's now that have banding, i don't think its an issue that can be fixed.
I have a 55" D8000 and somehow a Geek Squad and Samsung tech royally screwed it up, see my good times here, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...5#post21935125.

I received a call that they are going to replace the TV, however there are not any available on the Best Buy website. I saw that the ES8000's are on sale for close to what I paid for the D8000. I am planning on going later today to BB and check it out and see what kind of deal BB is going to offer for a swap. In general, are most people happy with this TV? Is the 3D as good/better than the D8000's? Same as in PQ, flash lighting? I can't really fully trust the views on the BB website, I always refer to the experts.

What kind of mount are people using for their U55ES8000? Samsung does not make one that fits my 55 inch. I wanted the mount that resembles 2 silver hockey pucks. Does anyone know when Samsung will make one for the 55 inch model?

I had the same issue with my D8000 it was brutal whenever there was vertical camera movement, really drove me nuts playing video games. I was able to get Samsung to do a replacement on the set and just got the ES8000. The ES is SO much better then the D8000. I've run all the movies that I really noticed the banding through it and can finally enjoy watching them.
Is the banding seriously that bad with the ES8000?

My Sony HX929 had some horrible DSE and banding, but it was 100% nonexistent with the LG LM7600 I'm returning tomorrow.

I'm sure a little won't bother me.

Can anyone please test to see if Micro-dimming can be enabled while in Game Mode?

Also, can anyone else comment on banding?
I personally didn't notice a difference with 3D but a buddy of mine said in seconds how much better the ES8000 is. Couldn't believe he commented so quickly and I tend to believe him since he's not a techy.

If true, that's quite an accomplishment; the 3D on the PN/UND8000 was the best I've seen across all models and brands.

The passive on the LG I'm ridding myself of tomorrow isn't half bad either, however.

I haven't had any banding issues, the D8000 I had was really bad. The ES is total opposite.

As far. Micro dimming goes, there is no setting to turn micro dimming on and off. Seem say it's tied to dynamic contrast settings. So there is no clear way to say if it's off.

Side note Game Mode is still messed up with the latest firmware. When on the tv has issues syncing with the source and will display a bright pink screen, this happens for hdmi and component inputs. Though that being said so far playing Xbox 360 I haven't felt the need to have game mode on. With the d8000 there was a pretty noticeable lag without game mode, lag doesn't seem as noticeable with the ES.

Also you asked about the edge lights, do you mean close to the edge? I know on the d8000 there was a a slight brightness line all around, it's not noticeable on the ES, a little bit on the bottom of mine but again not to the degree of the d series.

Besides the game mode bug, my only other issue is they removed the cinema black option, which on the d series did a great job keeping letterbox bars black. There is a bit of clouding in the letterbox bars on the ES, nothing crazy bad but it seems the black enhancer setting doesn't do the same thing as cinema black did. I also can deal with a little clouding in letterbox bars much more then banding in the middle of the picture like the d8000 had.

Appreciate the help.

By brighter edges I'm referring to the "washed out" left and right edges on the screen. If you watch cnet's review of the UND8000, you'll instantly see what I'm talking about, as it's apparent in nearly every shot I've seen on the review! For example, if you have a field of grass, the grass is significantly greener in the middle than on the sides. Also, grays/blues/lighter colors in general look inconsistent throughout.

Is there any way you could take a picture of a solid gray screen or at least a green/blue screen?

Really, no microdimming enabler? I head you could alleviate the Game Mode issue by resetting the set, no? Are blacks in Game Mode just as black as they are in other modes?

Sorry so inquisitive. Just debating on whether to get this set or wait for the Panasonic WT50.

Thanks again.

I think that in gaming mode, you lose all settings including motion flow. I've read the gaming settings are terrible but the refresh rate is terrific.

I know what you mean now that you mention it that way. To me the difference in uniformity has been night and day compared to my old D and new ES. I'll upload some images tonight when I get home.

The last I saw on here is the last firmware update was supposed to fix the game mode problem. It obviously hasn't. When I did get it to sync correctly though it still looked great. You can still alter the Dynamic Contrast and Black Level (Whatever it's called) so you can set it to Dark, Darker, Darkest, etc. I'll take a look tonight at the options that are available. Though as I said I've been playing my 360 without game mode on and it's been fine. Though I haven't tried the PS3 yet, which seemed to have more of a lag issue on the D series with lag then the 360 had.

Thanks! That would help a ton! As long as THAT particular issue isn't on this set and that the screens gets as dark in game mode (so flashlighting doesn't show) as it does otherwise, I'm set!

The brighter edge thing is the single problem I had with the D8000 series, and it would definitely deter me from this set if it in fact still exists.

Why is this thread so slow by the way? Do not that many people have the set yet?

I realize the ES8000 is fairly new, but has anyone had a chance to view this side by side with the Sony HX929?

I stopped in a Best Buy last weekend that has a Magnolia section. They have a 55" Sony 929 set in the Magnolia section which has subdued ambient lighting similar to my home environment. They also had a 55" ES8000 on display but it was in the regular Best Buy section with a big box store environment of overhead fluorescent lighting and with a different video feed.

I asked the BB salesman if they were ever going to have these two sets set up in the same environment with the same video feed and he said no. Told me the 60" Samsung (D8000?) in their Magnolia section was the competitive set to the 55" Sony and I could compare those two. Then told me they would be getting in a replacement for the 60" Samsung at some point and that would be the newer Samsung competitor to the Sony. I've heard about Samsung coming out with a line above the ES8000, but I took everything he told me with a grain of salt as I consider the ES8000 a competitor to the Sony.

I'm encouraged by the reports in this thread that the ES8000 sets are a lot more consistent than the D8000 ones, but would like to know how it compares to the Sony.

Thanks
Bruce

After weeks of going to stores and reading endless opinions and reviews, I'm going to exchange my 55D8000 for the 60ES8000. I was leaning towards plasmas for a bit but they seem to have their own issues & call me crazy, but I actually prefer the PQ of LED/LCD over plasma. I've also become a big fan of 3D and my current set is amazing to me in that respect, so if the ES is a step up in that dept. then even better.
Only thing I'm trying to convince myself of right now, is the extra $1,000. I guess I've just got to look at it as an investment for the next four yrs(evo kit should help)......or until OLED's come out @ 60" + sizes and at a reasonable cost. I'm going to see my friend next Saturday to do the exchange. I just hope this new set isn't riddled with issues like my current one.

Hi Everyone,

This is my very first post so please bare with me. I am a new owner of the 60UNES8000.

I'm not an expert by any means but after reading 20+ odd pages in this thread I felt compelled to contribute because I want to help other potential TV owners in making a decision on whether to jump on this set. Again as a disclaimer, I am not an expert in TVs. (Side note: I upgraded from a Samsung 46UND6000).

I received the TV last night (TV store owner's son-in-law delivered, mounted, and installed the TV for me). Service was impeccable, he even rewired everything for me and when we had the incorrect screws for the mount, we drove to Rona together to pick up the spare bits and went back to finish the job...

Anyways, someone did ask a question about what TV mount others are using. I am using a Zen-tech TV stand with a built-in mount (Don't believe I am allowed to post price/store details in this forum category but you can PM me for the link to the site). Its a 3 layer black tempered glass stand (max width of about 57-59", each sheet holds up to 88 lbs) and the mount can hold up to 60". Mount is able to swivel up/down and left/right.

Moving on... I've had a chance to play around with the TV for a bit and note the following...

I spent sometime viewing Frozen Planet Blu-ray in 2D and upconverted to 3D and subsequently played 15 mins of Uncharted 3 on 2D and then in 3D. The upconversions are phenomenal.

I also didn't notice any material washout/fading of colour when at different viewing angles (contrary to what others in this thread where saying) but maybe it was late at night and I was already getting pretty tired. I will check again later this week.

One thing that was bugging me though is the amount of bleeding light seeping through from the edges. In my scenario, its bleeding in the corners and a bit of bleeding at the bottom. Nothing material though. Again, I've read an onerous amount of content online about bleeding light and I think its really on a case by case basis. It's blatantly obvious when in the dark and most of the time I like to watch movies in the dark. The default backlight settings were pretty high open box so I had to reduce it which improved the situation marginally.

I think I am going to buy a bluray calibrating tool today (Disney WOW better or DVES?) and will try it out and see if I can get something better with calibrated settings. Is this even worth it?

Will keep you posted with an update if and once I discover any major breakthrough.

I know some of you will request for pictures as well. I haven't had time yet but I will have sometime down the pipeline too.

Cheers.

BigOrange84 did you ever try the LG 3D Demo or IMAX Under the Sea 3D where the potato cod fish pops out? If you did I was wondering if you can try on your 8000 to see if it pops out the same or at least depth is close to 55LM7600 set.
I can send you the demo file if you don't have it. I'm thinking of returning my 55LM7600 for a Samsung ES7100 or ES7500. I want the full 1080p 3D. Only thing holding me back is eye strain.

Cow76 I did watch some of the 3d tester material that came with the 7600 and it looked fine. However after after watching some 3d material on my 8000 I can say the 3d effect is much better. I watched some 3d alligator expedition located in the smart menu and the alligators were literally crawling off the screen, it looked very good. I am much happier with this set than the 7600 I returned. I have had absolutely 0 backlight problems and the pq is much much better. I think you would be very happy with the 7500 or the 8000. Are u having any backlight issues with your 7600? It was very bad on my 7600.
BigOrange84 there's some flashlighting bottom left & right corners but turning on local dimming helps it's barely noticeable now. The 7500 is a little out of my budget but the 7100 should be priced right when it comes out in May. I purchased my TV 4/11 it was shipped 4/17 so I'm close to my return window from Amazon.

All the demo's at Best Buy have those crazy locks on the active glasses so it's hard to get a feel for the active glasses. There's light leaking in so it's hard to get an accurate experience. These 2012 Samsung's I don't really feel any eye fatigue when watching 3D.
