Official Samsung UNxxES8000 Owner's Thread - Page 304

I picked up the 65es8000 Xmas eve for 3097 (with 200 gift card promo) from Amazon so I'd wait a bit to see if it goes back down, it's 3497 now.
Was supposed to be delivered Thurs but Ceva screwed up and now getting it this Thurs. Amazon credited me 80 bucks for the trouble, so net cost wound up paying just over 3000 for it.
Hopefully it's a good set, fingers crossed!

Check out Oppos for blu ray players. I have had the 93 model for a few yrs. now. Really nice player and company

From the recent news it doesn't look like it. Due to high manufacturing costs and less than a 10% success rate on the panels made, it looks like Samsung and LG are now concentration on 4K.

Not sure about CES and new sets being introduced. That's more of a crap shoot.

From what I've read, some of the best deals you can get on TV's is right up to the Super Bowl. It's after Xmas and the retailers (online and brick) are looking for incentives to move products.

Shop around - - an be happy with your decision. Above all, make sure you buy from a reputable retailer or online dealer (like Amazon) with a bulletproof return policy of at least 30 days. Lots of great suggestions on extended warranty in this thread. I believe the warranty is worth it for piece of mind. Enjoy the process!

Whatever you buy, it's really fun when it finally gets set up and it's working (knock knock) properly.

How does the PS3 BluRay player stack up with say the Samsung BD-E6500 3D WiFi Blu-ray Disc Player? Does it have the same hardware technology as the Sammy or other units of like price?

Yes, totally agree! So guess what...? I just got back from Best Buy and I own a 60" ES8000, its sitting in my hallway in the box.
I'll be working on getting it setup once my boys are asleep and out of my hair...lol...yay I joined the club today.

If you read the reviews, the Sammy Bluray players are not rated that highly. Maybe someone who has one can chime in.

I don't think you can go wrong with the PS3 - - and it will function as game device, as well.

The OPPO's are really nice players - - but also high priced. I've had good luck with the Sony BDP S790 - great picture and it even plays Disney's WOW disc once you reboot it (hint - see a couple pages back in the thread!)

Sony also streams very well - - I also use Amazon VOD as well as VUDU. OPPO doesn't have Amazon VOD - - they're bickering with each other about technical issues. The Sony BDP S790 can be had for $200.00 - - dual HDMI outputs just in case your receiver is not 3D enabled.

OPPO is the top of the line - - when I upgrade, that's what I'll look at, but I do not have a 4K TV (even though the Sony BDP S790 is 4K as well.)

Again, the key to all these purchases is to make sure you can return it, no questions asked, if you run into problems. Remember - - it's electronics...

Lots of folks absolutely love the 60" - - I would have considered it myself but I never saw it on the floor when I shopped. Pretty easy to setup. Excellent suggestions on "settings" throughout this thread. Garnoch's manual (qualifies for college credit) is also a good resource.

I have tried Garnoch's & Nitra's "Standard" settings before adopting Turboman123 "Movie" settings - - which are absolutely "lights out" on my Sammy 65".

Yeah, sorry I was on the verge all weekend long, just had to do it. I'll be happy either way. The picture on the display in store was awesome, and from all the good talk here I'm sure to be as happy.

mccord: congrats on new tv. Ive enjoyed my 60es8000 for a while now and hope your experience is great. As to blu ray players, fir what its worth I've been impressed and very satisfied with my ps3. Have a friend who started with a Samsung blu ray player to match his Samsung tv and there was just something about it he didn't like picture wise. He tried a ps3 on my suggestion and hasn't regretted it. Says the picture is much better.

As to settings on this thread, I've tried them all and for me (my particular panel and room environment) Nitras standard settings most closely matched what I ended up with after WoW disc calibration, and I actually preferred the look of his settings over WoW.

Ok, so who's all settings do I need to look at and what is the WoW disc? I don't know if I can take the time to personally try to calibrate this thing. I have two little boys running around all the time that probably won't give me 5 mins alone to try to calibrate it. So what is the suggestion for me? Have it professionally calibrated? I think I have some friends in the business who can do this.

Ps. Are these the cables I need to buy for my new TV and the XBOX, 3D BluRay, UVerse and Apple TV?

WoW : Disney produced user friendly calibration disc World of Wonder. Preferred this over the DVE calibration disc (which i used first, but the WoW disc was more accessible and had more useful test patterns for my money). Get pro calibration if you haven't the time although WoW took under an hour.

My understanding, HDMI cables need to be hi-speed variety for 3D signal. Cost wildly varies. Don't be duped. HDMI is HDMI and cost (somewhat) means nothing. A $3 hi speed hdmi cable works as well as a ridiculously overpriced one. Thats what i have. Can be found on amazon. Only thing to ensure is that it is a hi speed hdmi cable and not a regular one.

Cable shape/thinness: Since the hdmi inputs on the TV are sideways and since panel is (gorgeously) thin, you'll want a flatter cable head, and a thinner cable wire which will bend easier on that sideways input angle.

Thanks Fleetski...so what is the most preferred cable being used by UN60ES8000 users? I know monoprice is a favorite here, but are there others, I don't want to pay BestBuy prices of course.
I just linked to some of the high speed monoprice, but not sure they are the right ones used here...hopefully I can get feedback on them.

I saw the mono price cables. Reasonable prices. Just make sure you get hi speed. Honestly I can't recall the brand I bought at Fry's. I literally went for least expensive hi speed and they work like a charm.

How/why does Best Buy/Magnolia try to sell the Monster or whatever brands they have in there that are like literally $200+ for some cables? Do they actually sell those?
Right now I just have regular HDMI for my XBOX and UVerse and older BluRay, I know I need the high speed for the 3D BluRay, will I need the high speed for the others as well?

Amazon has some Mediabridge brand, are they any good? Decent prices, look more like HDMI cables I've seen in stores, where Monoprices look odd to me?

Those media bridge prices are good although the cable head looks a bit thick (hard to tell by picture). You do need a flatter cable head for this tv's input.

You only need hi speed hdmi for 3D. Standard hdmi will work fine on non 3D.

Monoprice Redmere HDMI cables work like a charm.

Yup. Well done. To be fair, some (not all) of these sales folks are younger and inexperienced, and simply parrot what their boss tells them (upsell). They're just trying to do their job, probably don't know much about cables, so a polite turn down like you offered is the way to go.

Oh yeah I can spot the ones who do and don't know what they are talking about, I used to sell electronics for Target back in college 10+ years ago. He seemed to know that I knew what I was there after and didn't try to push me too hard on any up sells, even the warranty. I didn't get a runaround of the mistake I was making not buying theres, even though it seems like a good one just more than some of the others I've seen and been pointed to here.

Ok so the Redmere are good and thin enough for the slim design of the ES8000's?

Oh another question that has come to mind to me tonight, is on my old dimming DLP Sammy, should I replace the bulb, and if that fixes the dimming issues, which I'm guessing it will as I never have had to replace the bulb and its been 7 years or so, try to sell it on Craigslist/Facebook/Local etc...or just try to sell it as a dimming set that needs a new $300-$400 bulb? Let some one else get a good deal and put the money into it?

And what do you think an expected rate for a dimming Samsung DLP (HL-S6187W) would be, or one with a new bulb?

I had a Samsung DLP from 2006 on original bulb which I sold this past summer. Don't replace bulb. The cooling fan also was starting to buzz lightly. Told buyer they would likely need a new bulb and fan soon. Asked and got $200 for it. Wasn't trying to make anything off it really. It was a 50" model.

Thats about what I expected, I would just like for it to maybe pay for my new BluRay device or possibly towards the new AVR that's coming next. I'll put it out there and see what I can get.
I guess the bulbs can be bought from Samsung, cause you know they will ask me about that.

Plasma guy here, but i have been eying up one of these TV's for a while now and finally took the plunge and got a 55es8000.

after reading this thread i think i have been paranoid and looking for problems, first night i think i noticed a little flashlighting which i already don't notice anymore:)

My concern is the vertical banding, when i look on an extreme angle i can see some(only on certain modes ie-standard in the black bars on the top and bottom). I cannot see any when i sit straight on.

This is my first LED TV so i am not sure it its normal or if i should be worried about it , like i said its only on an angle that i notice it, and will it get worse over time?

Banding of sorts is normal on all LED/LCD's. You notice it more on larger sets, but it generally happens to all of them, it will not change with age.
If it's something you can't live with, return it.
