That looks pretty bad. Get another one I say. Mine is August, Tijuana, Mexico. It's fine IMO. Good to hear of some 3D movies to rent. We saw Up and that was great. The 3D-blurayrental outfit is great, I get 5/month for like $16.

You're welcome and welcome to the thread. You definitely got through a lot of reading since last night so I commend you. Let's try to keep it peaceful though please or people could start accusing you of sounding like gtm73. Bolt isn't Anthony, who doesn't own a VT, but being him and Gas both own plasmas, I guess it's possible but doubtful. Ruegway owns a 65" 8000, not a 46" 7500 like Eagle. Turboman is just full of awesomeness like you said. A lot of people will have similar problems and hopefully past posts and our continued help (including yours perhaps), can come in handy to the people coming here looking for it. What kind of ES did you buy and how long have you had it now? Are you enjoying it?

Which reminds me, in addition to the Harmony 900 from my wife, I got Avatar and Titanic in 3D from my parents for Christmas.
....excellent my friend. I'm just sorry I didnt spring for the 3d titanic when it came out. I assumed it wouldnt be reference 3d material because it wasnt shot that way...boy did all the reviews prove my azz wrong!

If I pause the movie they instantly go away and when I restart playback it is fine for a bit and then will come back.
I tried to take some pics of the issue if it helps explain what i mean (sorry for the poor quality...)
You can see the effect on both sides here
You can see the purple bar on the right side especially towards the bottom
This picture shows the issue the best on the left side of the TV.
I am using a PS3 slim connected directly to the TV via hdmi. Is this an issue with the TV or is it something else?
Thanks!
...Holy Lavender Bar Batman!!!! I'd have to go right into those 3d options in the 7500 menu and experiment...quickly....and double check 3d setup in your player!!!!

....very very sharp evaluation of this fine piece of AVS thread-literature sprinkled with much smoke screen. The Falconeer has spoken.

Wish I could answer this but I've never see this issue. I have a 60ES7500. Could this be the PS3 Slim, guys?

Speaking of Avatar, I got the 3D disk as a "freebie" when I bought my Panasonic blu-ray player. I don't have 3D so I should've sold it when I could before it got released commercially. Oh well. Thanks for the comment btw.

No problem, Otto. I always enjoy your posts. The 880 was awesome but I never had one. Almost a few times though. I have a 550, a 700 and now the 900. I love it! The new LG TVs coming out look pretty sweet, I hope you enjoy the one you have. I didn't care at all about getting a 3D TV when I bought the ES, but it's proven to be a good time for the whole family and before the TV, I was the only one of the four of us that liked 3D in the theater. Tomorrow I'm finally seeing The Hobbit in IMAX 3D at 48fps. I'm very interested on how I'll react to that.

Thanks for the quick replies, that is kind of what I thought but just wanted to make sure. The only reason I even noticed this is because the right side of the TV seems to have a vertical line of pixels close to the edge that is noticeably lighter and is hard to ignore. Initially I thought it was backlight bleed but it is far to uniform and the pixels closer to the edge are darker. I really only notice it on 3d as it almost seems to break the 3d effect when it happens on that edge which draws my eyes to it(and it seemed to be most noticeable when the purple bars were there which is why I thought it might be related).

I'm probably just being very picky though so thanks again for the help!
Maybe you're being picky but maybe not. After mentioning the lighter pixels along the edge of the TV, I'm think your might have a defect. Don't quote me on that though. Without more info or seeing it ourselves, I'm just not sure.

OT: Pop into the 3D content forum here at AVS every so often. I do, and happened to catch a post that BB was having a 2-day sale on Under the Sea a month ago. It was fifteen bucks. I had wanted to get it for a while, but couldn't bring myself to pay thirty+ for it. I think they bounce down every so often at BB, Amazon, elsewhere, and it's just a matter of catching the wave. wink.gif

Falconfalcon
I wish to apologize for my previous post. I am under a great deal for stress, with me the main cause, because this is the first time ever for me complaining about a product to a manufacturer. AVS has become sort of my support group, and I really appreciate the positive comments from so many on this forum.
I am very sensitive right now to negative comments from anywhere, mainly because I have had to deal with Samsung support, and their do everything but help ways of operation.
Posting on a Samsung FB site is like chatting with a Samsung phone rep. They give you the exact same information the phone techs do, only with the written word. I assume they are in the same call center in South Carolina as the phone techs.
What has caused my issue---Failure to communicate from Samsung to me. This is a major flaw in their system if you are not satisfied. I truly believe that they hope you will just go away, continuing to heap frustration after frustration on you, their customer, and eventually you will give up. You can tell they have all been trained to follow the script, not letting any information out that could be used against Samsung.
Again, falcon falcon, I apologize for my previous post.
This is not the way I operate, and I am truly sorry.

Wayne

I just uploaded this video (again sorry for the less than stellar quality) of a few scenes from the avengers in 3d(placed 3d glasses in front of lens). You can see the right side of the screen seems to have some weird light issues.

Any thoughts?

Any suggestions on the best settings to try for my 60" ES8000? I have tried a few different ones from people, but am not sure if they had the 8000 series or not. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I doubt you'll see a difference in settings on an 8000 or 7500, especially in Movie mode. Mine are based on CNET's 8000 calibration but there are many others to try as you may know. My 60" panel is HS01. If you're not going to hire someone, play around, try a bunch of them, then tweak until you're happy. To get something a little closer to perfect for your panel without hiring someone, check out the simple calibration section of the Guide link in my signature to give you some ideas on how to attack it.

That worked! Hmm, I've never seen that, man. Unless someone else has a suggestion, borrow a different BD player, then if it's still the same, return the TV or contact support. I think I remember that the best way to do that is through the TV menu.

I tried ordering the same movie through my cable box and it shows the same issue. I also watched avatar in 3d and didn't have the problem and normal viewing seems to be ok as well. Very odd...

I have a friend that recently got the 70" Sharp, but I'm not sure exactly what model it is. Actually he got it a few months back and before I got my ES8000. I went to see it when he got it and thought it looked good/decent, but needed tweaking. Anyway, I hadn't been over there since that day and went back last weekend to help him calibrate it. Well, after having my ES8000 I can tell you I no longer think his 70" looks good or decent. It looks like crap! I was thinking of getting that TV before getting the ES8000. I am so glad I didn't! I never would have known just how bad that Sharp looks compared to the ES8000. Maybe he got a bad one I don't know, but it doesn't even come close to the picture quality of the ES8000.

oh great that good to know... biggrin.gif was it quattron sharp? if so it was the 835E if not then probably the 700 or 600 something...
i would had even bought the UE75ES9000S but its not out yet here in my country... don't think the 9 series ES9000 is much superior to the ES8000 or am i wrong? any info on that?
what i find weird is that 65ES8000 isn't even listed on most Samsung pages... only the 55es8000 or the new 75ES9000 why are they discontinuing it? but that a huge gap between the too...

anyway now it's on it's way to my home so...

btw any news on the upgrade kit? evolution something kit? is that going to make picture processing better?

His is the Quattron Sharp. You made the right decision. If you're anything like me, I'm sure you were crushed to learn not only that it wasn't coming today, but you wouldn't be getting it tomorrow either. I'm pretty impatient when it comes to waiting for my gadgets/toys to get here.

The ES9000 is nothing but a bigger ES8000. The only thing different from the 65" ES8000, besides the screen size, is a slightly better dimming system. In fact, when Samsung announced that TV it was the UN75ES8000, not 9000. When it finally went on sale they changed it to ES9000.

We don't know yet exactly what the evo kit will do, but should find out next week. Supposedly it will upgrade the CPU, GPU and memory so it matches the exact specs of the new TVs that will be announced next week as well. Also the UI will be updated through the kit to also match the new TVs. Other than that, we don't know.

Better dimming system? Software or hardware? If software maybe someone can hack it... is there actually custom firmware or such stuff? i remember reading ages ago that people were cooking some cool firmware for lg tv's... and other having acces to panasonic internal firmwares & hidden menus biggrin.gif
post #9505 of 15280
So I finally figured out how to calibrate my TV for my DirecTV box. I tried before to use the AVS calibration files through the DirecTV DLNA client, but the files would not play and I just decided to use the settings from my WoW calibration through my Bluray player. I decided today to try to figure out why those files wouldn't play directly through the DirecTV box and quickly learned that the box will only play MPEG2 files. I converted the AVS files to MPEG2 and was able to play them through the DirecTV box. I'm glad I did too because, even though it was subtle, there were some things that definitely needed to be adjusted. My whites and blacks were being clipped. The contrast dropped down one and the brightness up 3. My color and tint also change slightly. I don't think I really see much difference in the PQ, but there was definitely some white and black clipping going on that I didn't know about.

Now, the problem is that the TV is calibrated for the sat box, and all my sources are coming from my AVR to the HDMI2 input, so I can't have different settings for each source because I'm only using one HDMI input on the TV. So what I decided to do since I've enabled my Cal-day and Cal-night modes is to have each mode calibrated for each device like this:

Cal-day- DirecTV box
Cal-night- PS3
Movie- Bluray player

I'll probably set up the Standard mode for my AppleTV, but haven't done that yet. Now all I have to do is change the mode depending on which source I'm watching at the time.

Anyway, if anyone wants to calibrate the TV for the DirecTV box, you'll need to get the AVS calibration files and convert them to MPEG2 format so you can play them through the sat box's DLNA client.

I'm not sure. I think it simply has more zones than the 65" just like the 65" has more zones than the 60" (I think). I don't think it makes much difference honestly.

I looked into some of the firmware hacking stuff and I believe there is some out there, but I wouldn't risk it. The last thing I want to do is brick my kick@ss TV for some stuff that doesn't really matter.

You can also go here:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN65ES8000-65-Inch-1080p-Silver/dp/B0074FGMEW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357434379&sr=8-1&keywords=un65es8000

And scroll down to the bottom where they have a chart showing the differences in the Samsung TV models. You'll see the 8000 and 9000 are exactly the same except the 9000 has some local dimming feature that the 8000 doesn't. Other than that and the larger screen they are the same TV. Definitely not worth more than double the price.

Is your TV set for "Screen Fit" or "16:9"? If it's on "Screen Fit" try changing it to "16:9" and see if that goes away. If it does, then what you're seeing is part of the movie/video and not your panel.

that would be extremely distracting to me during normal viewing - especially movies like red october, nature channel content, etc.! its even worse than ir on a plasma with the amount you show. Look at Jestered's photos. Those represent what you should get for 3.5K imo. Very sorry you are going through the same experience as a lot of us other 65ers have gone through. I would recommend my new tv, but tbh I haven't had it long enough to really do that with conviction, all I know at the moment is that its PQ is certainly better - but there could be some other cons Im not aware of.

I had the same thought but in 3D mode the picture size option is greyed out. The one thing that gets rid of it is using a negative 3D perspective but that's only because it shrinks the picture a bit and hides the bar ect.
