I don't have UVerse, but if your display is set to "screen fit" and UVerse has a "native" output setting (like Direct TV), I'd use that. For instance, ESPN, ABC, and Fox all natively broadcast in 720p, while NBC, CBS, and the Food Network broadcast in 1080i. A setting like native will automatically switch the Samsung to the correct matching display more for the signal. You'll see it briefly displayed in the upper left-hand corner of the screen when you change to a new channel. If you force your box into always displaying in either 720p or 1080i, you end up artificially downscaling some signals and upscaling others. There is nothing wrong with this, but you may not get the full quality benefit of the original broadcast source.

You want to set the box output to 1080i over 720p, unless you have a native setting like pitchman mentioned.

Hey Pitcthman, Thanks for the reply....I did check the setup for both the bluray player and the hd dvd player and both were already set to properly display aspect ratio's as intended. Yes, all of my sources components are direct to to the 8000 and and all inputs are set to "screen fit" . I did pop in a few other anamorph 16x9 dvd's after i posted last night.

This was the first time, since the mid to later-mid 90's that I ever noticed odd behaviour when playing back a disc with regard to aspect ratio as I've always had a clear understanding of that. I always made sure that 4:3, 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 always diplayed properly on my 4:3 Sony XBR crt, Toshiba Cinema series 60" 16x9 rpCRT, my Sony 60" rpLCD and now the 8000.

I used to obsess with all of this; Video Essentials, all publications...yada yada yada (until I discovered that IMHO "the standard:" that we are ALL supposed to follow often rob's us of deatil in dark scenes and overall life, pop and vivid qualities that I like...I am such the rebel)...as I've often said...I dont give a bunny-rabbit poo pellet as to what a director intends for me to see at my crib!!!....but i digress

I guess I did not notice months ago, when for the first time I watched "Sexy Beast"on my brand new 8000....I did not notice what aspect ratio was even displayed....But, this is the only dvd I have that I know of that when played on both my machines, the pic is being forced to show as a 2.35.1 aspect as opposed to a half dozen other discs labeled 16x9 anamorphic. that all display correctly and fill my screen.

I imagine it has to be some weird encoding on an old disc that is being misinterpreted by the tv. My old Sony 60" rpLCD with the same Toshiba HDdvd player would display the Beast at 16x9 and fill the Sony screen.

The good news is that SexyBeast just came out on bluray and I'll be on Amazon this weekend ordering so....I think I wasted my 8000brothers time here in the forum.

I just fired off an email to samsung about it, I suggest the people having this issue do the same.

This is a new phenomenon for me today. I havnt watched the set much in the last week, but now it keeps popping up. Must have done some autoupdate?

I had this issue on and off for awhile, probably 4 months, but imnoticing much more lately because i just got a netflix account and once in a while it'll show as no network connection. but other times it's fine. my skype is settup so as soon as i turn the tv on if the skype comes up at the bottom corner i know it's online. hopefully it can be updated and it's not a faulty wireless sensor or something of the sort.

Same problem here. I was also having problems with my picture clicking off and back on. Smarthub would flash on and off quickly and then picture would go out. Because I have the hdmi connected through the soundbar and into hdmi 2, the bar would change to tv arc and the tv said no signal. I did have all my apps and Smarthub was working.
Service came in yesterday, changed the mainboard, and left. I turned on the tv later and went to Smarthub. Most of the apps were gone. Tried to log in, said no network. Checked network status, working. Went back and it logged in. It then downloaded Amazon app but it says Netflix under it. I do not have the main Samsung app to download anything new. Also keeps telling me my internet is not connected when it is.
This is getting crazy.

If my network code was only 4 numbers long i would'nt mind it so much I could stand waiting till they figure it out themselves but my code is 38 numbers long. I've email samsung Canada to speed things up and mentioned I wasnt the only one experiencing it. Maybe it'll be fixed in a couple updates from now.

Cinema Black was initially taken away for the ES line but showed up again on the ES9000. Based on this article, it may be back with the F series. This was a hardware feature before though so I wouldn't expect this from the Evo Kit.

Same. Smarthub updated all apps, but the apps were missing after the updates. I didn't have the other issues that you experienced.

Cinema black is the feature I miss most from my D8000. Total BS that they skipped this generation of 8000 but are adding it back. Id buy an evo kit for sure if it somehow could add that, but the fact that the D8000 had it with its weaker processing power makes me think it is panel hardware related, shame. If I had jet black corners my ES8000 would be amazing.

I don't know if the UVerse box has a native settings, I'll check. I think its 720p or 1080i and thats that, would be dumb if it didn't though.
I did play with changing the setting to 720p and view ESPN for instance, and didn't see much of any difference.

All of a sudden my cloud player is showing a lot more music.

I'm having a problem the last few days of the app screen popping up for a split second, then the show comes back. It flashes up so fast, sometimes I can barely tell what it is, other times it must pop up for a longer time or something because I can tell it looks like that app screen I never use.

Has anyone else seen this issue? I looked back a few pages in the posts, but the only thing close seems to be some network connectivity problems with the Smart Hub.

If you read mine you would see I had that problem and they just changed my mainboard. Smarthub app screen would flash on while I was watching tv and then because of my setup I would lose the picture.

It's something that has been going for some time. I would say the next update may fix it.

Yes, almost everyone is having your issue. At this point we are waiting to see if the next firmware or smarthub update fixes it.

Almost everyone but me that is. I'd urge everyone to not update their firmware and to make sure it doesn't automatically update (that setting is in the contact us menu as I recall). Mine prompted me to update the minute I first plugged it in and that was the last time (October). My philosophy on updates (cellphones especially) has always been "only update if there's a new feature that I want". I was on Blackberry forums and some would get updates from Mexico, and Italy for their models constantly. They'd always claim their phone was "faster, smoother, snappier" right away and then roll it back a week later because of some problem.
As for the people who are hardwired and have network connection problems have you tried using WiFi instead. I bet 99% of people don't use an ethernet connection for their TV they use Wifi. Maybe there's a problem with the TV's apps seeing that?

OK, thanks. I wasn't sure that's what you guys were talking about. It must have just happened to me because I did an update about a week ago that may have been there a while.

I had no choice about the update. Mainboard they just put in was already 1041. I have used wifi from day one. Not hardwired.

Am I the only one out here still on FW 1013? That is what was on it when delivered in June and I never let it connect. For reasonable money many of you may like using the Sammy smart hub via their bluray players. No drama for using the e6500.

I apologize ahead of time for the fact that this is coming from an Apple site, but it was reporting on Brian White's (of Topeka Capital Markets) thoughts on the TV biz and he seems to have mentioned the following....

"Of note at this year's show is Samsung's Evolution Kit, a hardware upgrade that will boost functionality in last year's HDTV sets. The kit is expected to be available in the second quarter of this year, and Samsung has promised a three-year commitment to customers, so that a 2012 smart TV can use 2015 features."

That stands in contrast to the supposed confirmation that the Evo Kit would be out in March and to the video of the Samsung exec saying it would be supported for 4 years, so that a 2012 smart TV can use up to 2016 features.
