New to projectors, general questions, pricing, etc...

Hi guys, long time forum member here, doing some research (quasi for myself since i will use it, but ultimately for my roommate).

Edit: I'm sorry i didnt detail the actual question. We are looking for a projecter, screen, and any hardware neccesary for a new home my roommate is purchasing. He would like to keep the budget between 2000 and 3000 USD for everything (screen, proj, etc). Overall image quality is of topmost concern. Black levels are important, 1080p is important, gaming is important but not critical. We prefer NOT to have 3d, dont really care about it.

Moving on:

Here is the back story. My roommate is buying a new house, and it has a decent sized room in the basement that is perfect for a home theater room. It looks like it can accommodate about a 120" screen, give or take, i know the previous owners had a projector and screen up because it is pre wired for the front left and center channels up front with the exits in the back of the room.

Anyways, I have all of the audio and receiver covered. He would basically be purchasing the Projector, screen, and anything necessary to connect everything up. I have HDMI cables out the wazoo so thats not a concern.

He would like to keep budget in between $2000 and $3000 for the projector, screen, and any necessary hardware.

Now, i have Klipsch RF-62 towers for L/R, and a RC-62 center channel. I've read that ideally you want an acoustically transparent screen so you can put the speakers behind the screen and the center channel as close to the center of the screen as possible. Is trying for that outside the scope of what we're looking for?

The room is not huge, i dont have exact measurements, but if i had to ballpark id say its about 13x18 or so with 8' ceilings.

As far as what would be the purpose, it would be 80% watching movies and TV shows via PS3, and HTPC via HDMI. Gaming would happen on occasion, so if there is one better suited to gaming that might be a smart thing to look for.

We dont care, nor do we want 3d, if it happens to have it, ok, but if we can get a better projector without 3d, we'd much rather go that way. Black levels are very important to us.

If i've missed anything please let me know, also, here is a picture of the room that would be used that the realtor took (no i didnt put up the twilight pictures, i do in fact have a pair between my legs). The blue wall is where the screen/speakers, etc, would go.

Seriously? Nobody has anything to comment?

Could someone maybe at least direct me to a couple websites or articles so i can start doing some basic research on what he may or may not need regarding projectors, screens. etc

well what is your question? I couldn't even find the question in your post other than re: AT.

He is looking to buy a projector, screen, and any neccesary hardware to attach it, hook it all up, etc. Would be mounting it on the ceiling. He is wanting to keep the budget in the ballpark of $2000-3000. I apologize i reread and you are right, its implied but not really spelled out. I will update the original thread.

If black levels are your #1 concern get a B-Stock RS40 from AVS. They are selling it for a ridiculous $1800.

I'd also paint the walls/ceiling and get a dark rug. Even with the best projector in the world you won't get deep blacks if your room has light walls.

Ok, so paint the walls a darker color, thats good advice, not too expensive either.

Any opinions on the epson 8100 and 8500ub?

unless you find an 8500ub for dirt cheap, get 8700ub since you don't care about 3d

everyone can recommend you anything and everything, but it's you and your roommates job to do your due diligence to make an informed purchasing decision. There's more than enough resources on this forum to assist you with that.

Well, i basically ended up on several of the manufacturers websites, did some web searches, found some professional reviews.

Looks like he is probably gonna go with the epson 8350. We dont really need the video processor in the 8700 and dont wanna spend the extra grand or so on it when from everything i've read the 8350 is an absolutely stellar projector. Also we plan on doing some gaming and from what i've read there is significant display lag on the 8500/8700ub's.

Now i gotta research screens, etc.

Awesome, thank you so much for the link.

Do you know of any comprehensive threads on screen info?

The 8350 has piss poor blacks compared to the RS40. I don't own either but this is a basic fact.

Though i appreciate the info, thats the type of thing i was trying to get in the first place. Apparently i wo1rded my original post poorly or something, but i can only go off the professional reviews i find and i really can't read through 40+ pages for every single model's owners thread to figure out what is what. I'll take a look at that RS40 closer now though.

Edit: That RS40 costs 2x what the epson does, it better have better blacks, and better everything else for that. Keep in mind he wants to keep the screen and projector under 3k and preferrably closer to 2k.

Are the blacks *that* bad on the 8350?

Yes the blacks are really bad on the 8350 compared to the RS40. Its a moot point now, since the RE40 B-stocks are all sold out now.
