So what kind of equipment do I need to power 5 or more audio zones?

Just curious... what type of equipment would I need if I were to set up an audio system throughout my home if I wanted to be able to control it all from 1 location... I've got 5 bedrooms (2.0 each), a family room (5.1), a home theater (7.2), a pool area (2.0) and may add another zone or two down the road. I don't know of any AVR that has space for a dozen zones and 25+ speakers, so I was curious what type of equipment is used to power a system like this.

A starting budget generally helps get suggestions started. AFAIK, Sonos makes a 12 zone system; however, you would likely be better served with a dedicated AVR (nicer 7.2 or 9.2 setup) in the home theater and a networking AVR (7.1/5.1+Zone 2) in the family room. Then connect the Zone 2 preouts on the family room AVR to an external 2CH amp connected to a multi zone impedance matching speaker selector which could connect to the other stereo speaker zones. A networking AVR could then be controlled from anywhere in the house via an iphone, iPad, or android powered phone using one of several "remote control" apps.
