Noob question: how do I play 3d movies on my TV from my laptop?

Sorry if that's been asked before, I couldn't find it.

I recently bought a Sony Bravia TV and I've been trying to get some sample 3d clips to work. If I plug the USB drive with the file into the TV directly it plays fine. However, if I plug my laptop to the TV through a VGA cable (it doesn't have a HDMI output) I can't get it to recognize it as a 3d clip -- it plays the two components side by side.

Is there something I can do to play the 3d movies from my laptop?

What software are you using to play 3D clips on your Laptop? Most Laptops can't handle it at all.

I think generally you need at least SP (Stereoscopic player)

How so? It's just a regular movie file, but split in two vertically.

I was using mplayer. You're saying I need a special player to play 3d clips? What does it do exactly? Is there some special transformation it has to perform to the video? Can you point me to some Linux player that can do it?

I actually do not know of any 3D player software that does not run on windows.

be patient, somebody else may chime in. On the laptops and 3D? I wa smainly speaking of 3D games and/or Bluray.

Does your tv have dlna? That what i use. Also you may have to manually switch your tv into side-by-side 3d mode.

If your TV's 3D Key does not cycle through the 3D format modes when you are watching your PC, it might be possible that the TV does support 3D via the VGA input. Or the TV does not support 3D in the resolution you sending via the VGA input.

Otherwise you will need to manually select the 3D mode via the 3D Key.

If your laptop doesn't have an hdmi out (you have to use VGA) then you can't use the automatic hdmi framepacking setup. You'll have to configure your TV set in 3D mode manually.
Each TV is different but in most cases you have to go through the TV menus and tell the TV to 1) activate the 3D mode 2) tell the TV the content is side by side.
Then just play your side by side video full-screen in any video player, or if your content is in an other format (top/bottom, or wrong aspect ratio) you can use stereoscopic player to do the conversion on the fly.

Most TVs work well this way but I have read users saying their TV refused to access the 3D mode with VGA input (only hdmi allowed). In some very rare cases, the TV doesn't have a 3D menu at all and then you're stuck (i think it was a 1st gen sony 3DTV).
