Speakers around $1700

Hi there

I turn to this forum for any major audio/video related advice.I am looking for speakers (5.1) for a 14' x 22' room. 40% of my viewing is general cable (fios) , 40% movies and the rest music. I have a budget of around $1700 for speakers and will spend another 300-400 for a Denon or Onkyo receiver. I know its not a big budget for nice speakers but that is all i am looking to spend. I have been reading this forum for inputs and Klipsch Reference Series, Def Tech, KFE and Emp speakers seem to be fairly commonly discussed.
I'd appreciate any advice or pointer in the right direction. I was wondering anyone from Northern VA area can recommed any dealers or stores where i can check some of the speakers

-Thanks in advance.

Check Polks ebay store for their refurbished LSi series. LSi 9's are $499 shipped, Lsi7's $350 and the LSiC is $374. That leaves over $400 for a good subwoofer. They're 4 ohm speakers so you would need a receiver capable of driving them ($$$). A Lava 12" and Onkyo 709?

The LSi 15's are $849/pr shipped. Tax in CA.

(Call paul for an accurate price).

Although, these will probably max ur budget, without a subwoofer, these will not disappoint. From my experience with swan and from the DIY communities respect for HiVi, I'd say your in for a treat.

(I'm simply remaining in budget, there are better subwoofers out there (this one is no slouch though xP) but your room is a bit big) This subwoofer though, if your room does not affect the sound too much (I'm not too knowledgeable at output vs room size) should dig deep and sound great.

It depends on your goals, if you want to do it all at once, then my selection may not be great as it surpasses your budget. However, if you want to start with a great 5.0 set, and then when your budget permits find a dual or single subwoofer setup that will suit your room well, then by all means, my recommendation is valid. You won't be disappointed, your eyes and hears will thank you.

For $1700, you can certainly do well if you pick the right speakers. I would suggest you go with high quality speakers that are sensitive (88-92 db/watt) and 6 to 8 ohms.

The kind of receiver you are talking about will not have enough power unless you are careful in your choices. Onkyo and Denon do tend to be the best in delivering decent 5-channel power according to power tests by Home Theater Magazine.

The speaker manufacturers I like for the best sound quality in that price range are KEF, PSB, and Monitor Audio. Deftech, Klipsch, and Emp don't like my ears, or vice-versa.

A set of PSB speakers consisting of the Image B6, the C4 center, and the B4 for the rear would cost under $1200, and the Rythmic FV12 subwoofer is $499. That would be my #1 choice.

A KEF system composed of the Q300, the T101c for the center, and the C1 for the rear would be just over $1200. that would be my second choice.

Either one of those systems will give you some excellent sound for many years IMO, and sound even better if you upgrade to a top-quality receiver such as the Cambridge 650R at some point in the future.

The Denon AVR-1912 would be my first choice in a low-priced receiver, for $400.

No personal experience with them but I've heard nothing but great things about the speakers. Here's the official AVS thread, and Dennis has been posting there today. I'm sure he can arrange an audition.
