How do you configure HTPC to match calibrated display?

I just finished calibrating my projector, so now I am trying to configure my HTPC to match or at least come close.

Playing an HD 720p MKV video in different playback software (TMT5, MPC-HC, WMP, VLC, etc) yields very different results. Some show slightly darker image, grainnyness, unbalanced colors, etc.

So the question is, how do you optimize your HTPC to your calibrated display?

I am sue someone, probably, many have done this. Would you please offer some comments/suggestions? Thanks much!

Here's my system.

HTPC: Athlon II X4 630, 8GB RAM, 60GB SSD, 4TB, Radeon 5670
Blu-ray player: Sony S360
AVR: Integra DHC-9.9
Display: Epson 8100 projector
Screen: 90" DIY Gray paint

All devices are connected to the AVR then to the projector via HDMI.

I used the avs 709 files on the forums to set contrast and brightness correctly thru my video card drivers(nvidia)

Dont touch a thing, I leave the ATI drives are their defaults. The only thing I change is to full RGB PC mode and set my TV's HDMI input to the same so my black levels match.

All adjustments should be made on the TV, not the media center.

I calibrated my projector using the AVS HD 709 patterns, with I1D3 and HCFR Fork

Did you use the Media Center as your display source when calibrating?
Yes and no, My media center was in place when my calibration was done however a seperate HDMI port was used on my AVR to perform the calibration.

I had a pro do it this past weekend.

I use only the media center as my single source for everything, once the cabliration of the display was done the media center look perfect, we didnt have to touch anything on the video card controls etc...

I guess my point is, if you are using a disc etc, try to play it back from the media center and peform your adjustments on the display.

I was told by my thx calibrator that you shouldn't touch the tv/projector . Change the pc settings.

I guess its more difficult if you are using multiple sources. I have never had the need to change anything (color or brightness etc...)on the media center for the last 7yrs. Just video quality settings for interlacing

Has anyone attempted to calibrate MadVR with a 3d-LUT?

I guess the 'ideal' way is to THX calibrate the display/projector first with a 'known' correct source, and then calibrate the HTPC using a colorimeter/spectrophotometer.

My HTPC is my primary video source so I calibrated my projector with TMT5 displaying the AVSHD patterns. So I guess, my projector is calibrated for TMT5.

And then when I play my videos with either WMP or MPC-HC, the color, clarity, brightness, etc. are all off.

I've been told that the proper way is to calibrate the projector with a standalone blu-ray or dvd player for example, and then adjust the HTPC's settings to match.

But I guess, if the HTPC is your main source then you should just calibrate with the HTPC.

But then again, there are various settings within the video card driver such as Catalyst Control Center, but do you do with those?

And then the various video playback software (TMT5, VLC, MPC-HC, WMP, J river, etc.) how do you account for those?

Pick your most commonly use software and then calibrate with that software driving the calibration patterns?

There are just too much variables when it comes to an HTPC.

Hoping someone that went through with this can provide some inputs.
