Quick keystone question

This is not really a problem, I'm just trying to further my understanding of how this stuff works.

I have a Mitsubishi HC3800 and it needs a couple of keystone clicks to square up the picture from my DirecTV DVR. Works fine. But when I put up the HC3800's internal crosshair test pattern, I have a pretty severe trapezoid, even though my DVR projects a perfectly square picture.

Why would the geometry be different between an internal test pattern and the DVR?

Thanks!!

Keystoning can cause picture degredation so it may not effect the test patterns. Just a guess as I do not own this pj.
