For the most part the game is exceptional considering its age, but a few areas still wreak of poor design.

Speaking of poor design, I actually finally had to put this down as I was getting pretty frustrated with the upper downtown section of Oltanis where you have to swingshot between 3 hover cars. In four attempts swingshotting to the second car, I always got dropped to the side of the car instead of in it and had to restart the checkpoint at the very beginning (before the long security turret gauntlet section). I'll try it again this evening with some tips I picked up from another forum.

As long as there's straffing, bring it! lol

Funny you mention that as I was suffering thru that section last night and experienced the same problem as you. I finally go thru it when I noticed that the hovercars move at different speeds so I found that just waiting a bit until they lined up more closely before firing the swingshot did the trick.

The original Ratchet & Clank is a lot of fun but also has a lot of frustrating sections like the one above that can only be solved thru some try and die gameplay. Still having a lot of fun with it.

I just beat the 1st game, and brace yourself for the endboss. This game comes from the day when they really make you work for it. eek.gif

There's a checkpoint before the start of the final boss, but no mid-battle checkpoints. The frustration levels were high, and I can't remember but I'm hoping games #2 and #3 are a little on the easier side for the end battle. redface.gif

I beat the end boss as well a couple of hours ago. It did take me a few tries but after a while the patterns became pretty manageable. The hardest part during the first and second sections was timing Ratchet to jump over the bombs Drek throws; I found it really helpful to go into that section with the Blaster, Devastator and Tesla Claw on the quick select screen and fully loaded. As long as you're fairly close to Drek they will home in on him and whittle away at his health (especially the Tesla Claw). Jumping across the platforms was iffy at times because of the mushiness of the buttons on the Dual Shock (I died just as often from a bad jump as from getting killed by an enemy). The third part of the fight was also a little frustrating because of all the robots but I found the drone device used in conjunction with the Glove of Doom to be pretty effective at thinning the enemies out. Still a really enjoyable game though and vastly more fun that 95% of the stuff that's been released this generation. Really glad I finally got to play it.

My memory is a little hazy on Going Commando but I do remember the final battle with Nefarious in Up Your Arsenal being pretty frustrating as it also had widely spaced checkpoints close to the end and Nefarious could really pound away at your health quickly if you didn't avoid his attacks.

I started up Commando - wow, a nice bump in graphics over the 1st! I think it's better texture and a color scheme that makes things pop. This looks almost as good as I remember the PS3 R&C games.

Anyone else playing Commando on a 7.1 system, and getting the cinematics audio in the rear speakers? The in-game action/cut-scenes audio is positioned properly, and I don't think the 1st game's cinematics did this. I also noticed this issue with the Sly Cooper HD Collection, so I'm wondering if there was phasing problems with the PS2 dev tools at some point. confused.gif

After putting the collection down for 2 weeks, I finally decided to just skip to Going Commando as well, abandoning my frustrating run of the first game.

In addition to the nice bump in graphics, the controls and gameplay are much improved in GC as well. What a huge difference strafing and having the game pause when you hit triangle for the Quick Select menu make. I finally feel like I'm playing a Ratchet & Clank game! --though I'm still missing my R1 fire button and the camera can still be a bit wonky at times. Unlike the first game, I now feel like I only have myself to blame when I die, from being careless, as opposed to the game playing cheap and unfair, like I felt throughout the first game.

I'm also getting sound from some cutscenes in my rear speakers--just like the Sly collection, as you said. That doesn't bother me nearly as much as the drop in picture quality I see in the cinematics. I never understood with Sly and now R&C why cinematics don't look as good as game engine graphics. It's just a CGI cartoon. Shouldn't these cutscenes look better than gameplay graphics like they do in many PS3 games?

The cutscenes look like garbage because they are pre-rendered. They'd have to go back to the original cutscene animation files and re-render them at a higher resolution, like what they do with older animated-CGI movies for Bluray (Toy Story, A Bug's Life, etc.). That costs time and money, so I guess they decided to leave the cutscenes as is and simply upscale them.

I've been playing Going Commando off and on for about a week. There are some equally frustrating parts in it as well. The space combat can be rough until you upgrade your ship and I'd forgotten how cheap the giant Clank level was. I guess every game has its frustrating sections.

I'm sure I'm still in for my fair share of frustrating moments in Going Commando, as I've only completed six planets and two space battles. But one of the hugest differences I see in GC over the first R&C is the amount of nanotech you get. Nearing the end of R&C1, I was still only able to take 5 hits before dying and restarting a checkpoint (I didn't have enough for the 30K bolt nanotech upgrade yet--whatever that gives you). In GC, I can already take 16 hits from enemies that don't seem nearly as dangerous while my weapons seem much more potent, especially the ones I've upgraded through use. I was also able to win the hoverbike race in GC on only my second attempt. I can't tell you how many times I had to restart the two hoverboard races in R&C1 that I encountered that I needed to win to advance the story.

Dude, Ratchet went Commando. You gotta expect that he's gonna be pretty awesome as a result. Just in case you're confused as to what going Commando means:
