Thanks for all the replies guys. Sounds like it's definitely worth it. Any thoughts on solid but affordable recievers?

Onkyo TX-8050 or HK3490 are both well regarded. I own the Onkyo and am pleased with performance, built in DLNA and streaming services and the Android app for remote control. It has everything I need.

Post in the subwoofer forum for requests for recommendation, you'll get a wider range of responses (ie: more confusion ).

Make sure to review this post before asking for recommendations in the AVS subwoofer forum so that they can help you best. I would also mention the speaker/receiver setup you decide on and the type of music you listen to.

As for a receiver, the HK 3490 and Onkyo TX-8050 are good choices. If you need to go cheaper, I have the HK 3390 which would be fine if you don't need an optical input. If you think you might want to upgrade to 5.1 sound one day, then you could go with the Onkyo TX-NR509, although it will have less power volume output into 2 channels than those stereo receivers. One advantage of the 509 over the 2 channel stereo receivers is that it has built in bass management, giving you a wide variety of crossover options for the sub/speakers. With the 2 channel receivers, you'll have to use the crossover on the sub and set the crossover to the low frequency roll off of your speakers.

Even though Pauly1 already made his mind, I want to tell you my experience with mp3 files.
What really counts (for me) is the quality of the recording, I have 128 kbps songs that have almost the same sound quality of others of 320 kbps, for example I have a Yuksek song ("Tonight" I think) with 128 kbps that sounds as good as Bloodhound gang´s MOPE at 320 kbps, in my case most 256 kbps songs are good enough for me, many 128 kbps songs don´t have good sound quality, I just don´t listen to them, painful to my ears

In the 256 kbps songs, I have some nice recordings that can match or even sound better than other 320 kbps songs.

Never heard a FLAC files.

The difference that I can hear between 320 kbps and CD is that CD has more bass and nothing else.

That´s just my opinion

It also depends on the quality of your speakers. Some are more revealing then others and more unforgiving of not so good recordings.

Pauly1,

I use this to do the very thing you originally posted:

Got this system for my wifes new iphone 4S. The Roth MC4 ipod/iphone Coocon is 'going tubes on the cheap'. The combination of the tubed preamping and the MosFet amping, which is quite powerful at only 13W/channel, warms up the digi files very well indeed. So good it ran the main system towers @88dB/6 ohm at my normal levels without so much as a burp. I use the DVD player for CD/DVD play. Inexpensive as hell but it plays everything thrown at it and upsamples at 24/192. Go figure.

The bookcase has a 42" plaz on the top. Settled on Polk Rti A1s for obvious space reasons. Also considered the highly regarded Wharfedale Diamond 10.1s and .2s. If you're going to want decent sound use FLAC or Apple Lossless.

Cheers,
'nother Paul
