Speaker Crossover Settings

I have a much higher end system than what someone in my family could afford. So we set them up with a budget system. I know what my settings need to be for my stuff, but the lower end equipment is a different story.

They have a Pioneer 521 AVR, with Monoprice in-ceiling speakers and a 12 inch BIC America Sub.

The Pioneer auto calibration ran, and set the crossover at 100Hz. I've always set mine to 80Hz. I see the Frequency rating on the site, but you never know how well a speaker goes in the lower range.

What are your thoughts?

I am wondering if the monoprise speakers can handle 80Hz without

It's usually good to set the spkrs to small on the receiver and 80 HZ like you said, and let the sub handle everything below 80 HZ. The mid and high frequencies generally don't put heavy demands on the amplifier, the lows however do. So let the amp that is built inside the sub do the hard work. I use two main tower spkrs that have twelve inch powered woofers built in with 250 watt amps for each, but I still set my processor to 80 HZ and use the small setting as well. I have a separate sub that does everything below 80 HZ. I like the overall smooth sound when watching movies and music.
For your 100HZ setting Vs. the 80HZ setting, you won't harm your system, so try both using one of your "reference" discs...something that you are so familiar with- a movie scene or a favorite song. This is the fun part, so let us know how you end up setting it.
