Official Sony KDL-46HX750 & KDL-55HX750 Owners Thread - Page 33

Anybody have any info/opinion on the new W802 model, HX750 class replacement that's coming "next"
I haven't looked in too much detail but the main difference seems to be passive 3D (and free glasses) and some sound improvements.

The most common complaint with the HX750 (or Sony) seems to be the 3D is only adequate not exceptional.
Actually I don't care all that much about the 3D
I am planning to purchase the HX750 in two weeks or so
Wondering if it might be worth waiting for the W802

Mainly all I'm seeing is the downside to waiting
- newer is not always better
- will have to wait even longer for some reliable reviews
- probably get a much better deal dollar wise on the HX750 than on the latest and greatest
- no idea when it will actually be on sale

This is my first foray into the "big screen" jungle. Just wondering if anyone had some advice on what to do.
I'm pretty much decided on the HX750 on this point unless a real good deal on something equal or better comes up.

- Thanks -

I guess I really dont have an opinion on the HX750's replacement model the W802 except to say that from what I have read and heard there is no major improvement over the model its replaceing except for the fact that Sony is including Passive 3D instead of Active 3D in the W802. In fact I have read and heard that the W802 is actually a replacement for the EX640/645 series and not the HX750. That could be wrong I really dont know someone here may be able to verify that or not. As for some complaints that the 3D on the HX750 is only adequate and not exceptional? I will argue with that but hey to each is own as they say. I think 3D on the HX750 is awsome but thats just me and my opinion. The bottom line is if you want to get the HX750 then go for it because its a great tv and I am sure prices will continue to drop with the arrival of the W802 this spring. If you want to wait around for the 802 then thats your choice as well, your money. Sorry I couldnt be of more help to you but again its your money and your choice in the end.
I just saw a couple sites are listing the HX750 as discontinued. I bought mine with a 30 day price guarantee but doubt that the price will drop since they're still selling very well. I also bought a 5 year warranty from Amazon since my older Sony developed a solid vertical line on the left side of the screen after 4 years. If I would have bought a 5 year warranty back then, then my HX750 would not have cost anything since it was cheaper then my first Sony.

If Sony are going the passive route then i guess they are using LG IPS panels. Lower contrast but better viewing angles.

Personally prefer VA panels myself.

Steve1971 - "3D on the HX750 is very very good. My advise to you is get the PS3 3D glasses because they work better then the regular 3D glasses from Sony plus they are cheaper. That being said nice Racing Sim setup, looks cool. "

Thanks for the feedback .. Im going to the Sony store this weekend and will try out the TV with PS3 glasses, and i appreciate the kind comments about my racing setup, its cheap (well cost me nothing, had the wood lying around) and took only a few hours to build from looking at a pile of wood, to final creation!

PS3 glasses have the polarizing filters built in eliminating many of the problems associated with the non polarizing 250 and 750 Sony glasses. You can request free polarizing filters from Sony for the 250 and 750, but considering the PS3 glasses are only 19.99 at BB, probably less hassle to just get them rather than call Sony and wait for the filters to arrive.

Once you have the filters, the 3D on the 2012 line meets or exceeds in some cases the ES8000s 3D.

One side note... 3D gaming on the PS3 will not be at the same resolution as when watching 3D movies. Not sure what the actual resolution is (perhaps someone can post the correct number) but I think it is capped at 720p.

Yes the 3D will be 720p capped, have done a bit of research into this smile.gif it will be mostly used with my PC for gaming anyway, only just bought gran turismo 5 the other day for a bit of fun!

I haven't tried out the 3d yet, but I just wanted to say that setup that you built for racing games is pretty awesome.
Thanks ! its literally the first thing ive ever really built, so im pretty happy with it smile.gif have only given it about 2 hours of seat-time so far, but loving it !

a few quick questions

People are mentioning the PS3 3D glasses, does anyone have a link to these? we dont have Best Buy in new zealand but if i have a model or a rough idea what im looking for im sure i can take this to the sony store or try and track some down locally.

I was also looking at the Panasonic TC-P50ST50 ,, looks amazing, however then i realised it didn't exist here , and can only get the TH-P50ST50 .. time to find out the differences between the two, between TC and TX, and how the TX compares to this HX750...also as it is a Plasma TV there could be issues with Image Retention (since it will be a gaming monitor potentially used for many many hour stints)

I really appreciate the friendly honest feedback i find on here .. hopefully one day i can contribute somehow!

I'm with you Aaron on the VA panels. I think the veiwing angles are a hell of alot better on my HX750 then they were with my old V5100. But then again the V5100 was a 2009 model and the HX750 is a 2012 model with LED.

Go on Amazon.com and see if you can find the PS3 3D glasses that way. Or try Ebay as well. As for the Panasonic sets? Image retention is pretty much a thing of the past they say because Panasonic has worked hard to correct that fault but whether it still happens or not I cant tell you because I have no experience with Plasma sets. That being said.......once again I love your racing setup and I think it would be a blast useing it playing a Formula One racing game in 3D or 2D for that matter! biggrin.gif

Thanks Steve, I cant get enough of the racing setup ! I almost didn't go to work today .. however i have the house to myself for the weekend so will be gaming it up large and loud! im currently using a friend who i live with's tv (sony kdl-40ex520) .. its too small for what i want, and im assuming the 46HX750 will eat this for dead in terms of quality!

I think my mind is made up, im pretty convinced on this particular TV, now i just need to do some comparisons between the Panasonic Viera TH-P50ST50Z and the HX750... because 50" sounds so much more awesome tongue.gif and if it matches in terms of performance (dont care about having to use in low light, or power consumption) .. then why not!

Though IPS is supposedly better viewing angle wise with no shift, contrast ratio in my opinion is just to low. Be interesting to see what Sony can do to aid the black levels but i doubt they will be as stellar as the 2012 models.

That's a link to my TV, anyone have experience with it? It seems really similar to this model but I can't confirm if it has gorilla glass or not, it def doesn't have any 3D mode and there is no cinema mode in the display configuration.

Also, it seems that this same model has different features depending on which country it has been sent to. Would it be advisable for me to change the regional firmware to acquire those features that i want?

You know, I haven't tried out the 3D on my 750, but did on my 929 and I used the Play Station glasses. They are actually pretty good. I tilted my head all over to try and simulate the loss of brightness and all that stuff. Didn't see a problem. The 3D was actually pretty good. I had a HX820 a few years ago and 3D has come along way from then. I picked the glasses up at Best Buy for $20 apiece. And they are rechargeable. I will try my 750's 3D and let you guys know what I see.

I found some new setting's for my HX750 that I think I will finally keep! I went to Hometheatermag.com and used the setting's Tom Norton used for the HX850 and with some tweaks to the Black Corrector setting and ACE I found the settings I am finally satisfied with and am going to stay with. If anyone is interested check them out or let me know and I will post the setting's here. Its about damn time I found settings I can live with! biggrin.gif

So i went to the Sony store today to check out the 46HX750 and 46HX850 and got offered a damn good deal!

TV's here in NZ are a lot more expensive than what you pay there ..

RRP at Sony for the 46HX750 is $1700USD
RRP at Sony for the 46HX850 is $2550USD

the guy in the Sony store was willing to sell me an HX850, with 4 pairs of glasses, and a speaker stand (sony sub463s) for $1700USD!!!

i would have to be a fool to stick with the 750 with the 850 offered at that price ! the 4 pairs of glasses is a great bonus, the speaker stand doesnt help me at all as i have a hifi system this will be hooked up to.

I may have to depart this thread frown.gifeek.gif

That's a hell of a deal. I say go for it. The HX850 is a sweet tv but I'll stick with my HX750.

Does the HX750 allow only one customized setting? I just switched to the Steve's post from Hometheatermag. It looks pretty good in the evening when I watched a little bit of a movie with the lights down low. I would like to have 2 customized settings to flip back and forth to see which looks best. I also don't know how this setting would look in the day time in my brightly lit family room. It would be nice to have a daytime customized setting that brightens things up a little bit and then a night movie watching setting. Also, under Picture Adjustments, what is Setting Memory for? Mine right now is on Current Input

You can have different settings for each imput. I think the settings I got look good day or night and my tv sits in a bright room, I pull the shades during the day due to sunlight, and at night they look even better. The wife and I watched Battleship last night with all the lights off and wow! Understand that a brightly lit room will somewhat effect the PQ of any tv so keep that in mind. You asked what "Setting Memory" is for. That setting is used for keeping your personal settings for what imput your useing. The tv remebers them so you dont have to change them. I use the same settings for Blu ray and regular tv watching. Hope that explanation helps and if not let me know or maybe someone else here can answer it better.

Ok I was going to post my settings I now use tonight but I figured I would do them now so here they are:

Picture Mode: Custom.
Backlight: Min.
Picture: 85.
Brightness: 51.
Color: 50.
Hue: 0.
Color Temperature: Warm 2.
Noise Reduction: Off.
MPEG Noise Reduction: Off.
Dot Noise Reduction: Off.

Advanced Settings:
Black Corrector: Medium. (Home Theater Mag Has This Off.)
Advanced Contrast Enhancer: Low. (Home Theater Mag Has This Off.)
Gamma: 0.
Auto Light Limiter: Low. (Home Theater Mag Has This Off.)
Clear White: Off.
Live Color: Off.

White Balance:

R-Gain: 0
G-Gain: 0
B-Gain: 0
R-Bias: -1
G-Bias: 0
B-Bias: 0

Detail Enhancer: Medium. (Home Theater Mag has this to off)
Edge Enhancer: Off.
Skin Naturalizer: Greyed Out.
IP Conversion Preference: Greyed Out.

Screen Settings:

Wide Mode: Full.
Auto Wide: Off.
4:3 Defualt: Greyed Out.
Auto Display Area: Off.
Display Area: Normal.

Color Matrix: Auto.
HDMI Dynamic Range: Auto.

So here is the settings I took from Home Theater Magazine that Tom Norton uses for the HX850. The only difference is I use the Black Corrector, ACE, Auto Light Limiter, and the Detail Enhancer because I think they look better turned on on my tv. I also only use Full Pixel when watching Blu ray movies because I feel Full Pixel is wasted on Directv HD. Alot fo their channels are compressed HD as I call it and with 1080i being their highest resolution I just use the normal feature and not Full Pixel. Alot of people have asked why use the settings for the HX850 when its different from the HX750. Well the sets are almost the same except for 4 features and Tom said that useing the settings he posted for the HX850 would be almost the same for the HX750 with little or no difference. What my wife and noticed since useing Tom's settings is how natural colors look and how crisp and sharp they look. Not to mention Blacks look great as well as shadow detail. 3D pops with Toms 3D settings as well and I love that. Like I have said before I finally found the settings that I think are optimal for my tv and I dont think I can get any better except for maybe a pro calibration and even with that I dont think it could be any better. I guess as longs as the PQ looks good to me then thats all that matters. biggrin.gif

Any Picture settings involving Warm2, count me out. It's just way too red/orange/yellow for my tastes. Then again I have a fairly dark living room.

Regarding my random reboots. It now occurs every single time I watch TV at least once and usually twice. Bummer, looks like i'll be trading this guy in a second time after all!

Damn gator! I agree I would give Sony a call or email them and get another one. The re-boot thing shouldnt be happening as much as it has for you. Give it one last shot and see if the 3rd one works. I would do it soon though because Sony is discontinueing them, I already know the 46inch is no longer avalible on the Sony website but the 55inch still is. Hope a 3rd one works better for you buddy.

Have a look outside, the sky isn't blue tinted, the sun adds a warm hue. If you prefer it cooler for tv viewing though that's fair enough, i prefer to have my tv as realistic as possible.

Very strange to hear about random reboots. Not heard a mention of it over the pond.

Thats why I use Warm 2 as well Aaron but some prefer other options as well and its what they like. I guess its what looks good to your eyes. That all being said my only complaint with my tv is the internal speakers. They sound alright but boy do I need a sound bar or an AVR! eek.gif Thats my next must have.

Here's a slightly strange question.

My previous Bravia LCD TV would tell me information on the input I was using at the time. For instance 1080p, 60hz.

The HX750 just tells me 1080p, 12-bit. Is the TV basically always running in 240hz since that's just the speed of its refresh rate? Is there anywhere to see the current input Hz?
