Just came across this review, which certainly piqued my interest for this model:

Black levels and viewing angles better than a Pioneer Elite?

Problem is it's still nearly as expensive as a 65" vt

Nice find Winston......it just got harder to decide, and I do not think that we will be able to see these until late April as well as the LG LM9600 that has sparked my interest !!

Yes, it appears to be a fine TV.

With respect to price, I wouldn't be surprised if they hit the marketplace lower than $2999.99 as previously stated by Panasonic, because Samsung is already marking down their top of the line 55ES8000 to $2899.99.

Is it possible that Samsung was caught off guard by Panasonic's advancement in LCD technology? The WT series surprised a lot of industry folks at CES this year and I'm sure it wasn't expected, especially by Samsung.

Finally, Samsung was originally planning on selling the 55ES8000 for well over $3000. What happened?

Chances are the lg and panasonic share the same panel...both ips.

The black levels are really interesting.

This actually has me reconsidering buying the Samsung UN55ES7500. The only difference between the WT50 and the DT50 is the remote and..that's it. The screens are literally identical, even according to their site. If I can get it cheaper than the Samsung..there is a real chance of me choosing it.

I think it deserves thought. Panasonic has not been in the big lcd game before and appears to have put together a real challenger to samsung.

That could be the reason I go with Samsung.

"Real challenger to Samsung" ... when I read the article it said that the Panasonic beat the Elite hands down as far as black level goes. This thing goes to the top of my list if they make it in a 60".

They will be making 47" and 55" in the WT/DT 50s.

What quietly caught my attention was the plasma-like viewing angles and motion/fluidity.

These two have kept me from ditching plasma. Even the hx820 we have in our playroom has crap viewing angles and still looks lcdish at time.

I don't understand. How such a great black level is possible with an IPS panel AND without local dimming ?

I am still a bit mistified by the pricing of these higher end lcds...it's about a grand more than the Plasma equivalent....

It's not quite that much. The 55 inch VT50 is currently expected to cost $2499.99 when it becomes available. The 55 inch WT50 is expected to cost $2999.99.

The production and expense of producing LCD panels has always cost more from my understanding of the materials and process involved. Also, the VT line is Panasonic's baby, is it possible that they do not want the WT line absorbing any of the VT's sales. I don't know but what would happen if the 55 inch WT50 was selling at $2499 or less? I imagine that the average consumer (the majority) would opt for the WT and it wouldn't even be close.

Remember, in the typical store atmosphere, LCD has it all over the plasma. Try to tell your local shopper that the plasma, properly calibrated, may look better in their home. They would give you a pretty strange look.

You missed my point. You wondered why these particular TV's cost as much or more than the "plasma equivalent". I offered an opinion with respect to their cost to manufacture as well as the risk of Panasonic hurting their plasma sales.

With respect to someone "dropping north of two grand", the average consumer makes up the over whelming majority of sales. The average consumer does very little research and depends on what their friends or family purchased and more so on the guidance of store sales assistance. The number one trait that determines what they buy is based upon what they see, this has been validated by numerous studies and survey's.

Also, if someone walks into a store with the intent on spending "north of two grand", they are going to make their choice on two things: What are they getting? and how does it look? They are not videophiles, and they are not reading and researching forums and AV sites.

I've been working with consumers for 29 years, I know how they think. They don't think like us.

You are correct. I've had many friends call me while they are at Bestbuy and other stores and say they decided to buy a new TV, and which one should they get. I told them 2-3 to look at, and sometimes they picked one and sometimes they listened to the salesman (and a couple then returned the set the salesman had recommended).

My dad, who I consider a pretty tech guy, bought a new TV and called me up. He told me the model and I said like "so you went with Plasma over LCD?" and he said "I don't know, whats the difference?" He just went with what the sales guy recommended and was on sale that week.

Come on dad, I raised you better than that

My point is $3k tv is not the average tv purchase of the average consumer....

Understood. However, we were discussing the Panasonic WT series and it's cost in relation to comparable plasma TV's. Larger sizes, 3D, performance, apps, etc.

As of today, Sunday, March 18th, the average cost of such a TV at Best Buy is $2453.00. So, I guess they are spending that much.

And now to get back on thread topic, I question Panasonic's delivery of these TV's which is scheduled for May. Samsung's comparable models are arriving in stores now. That's got to hurt them.

May does seem a but late in the game...samsung seems to have nearly all its models out now...

I was thinking this same thing. The tv's almost look identical with the same ips panel. By not having Local-Dimming, we'll see if there is a huge difference.
