You missed my point. You wondered why these particular TV's cost as much or more than the "plasma equivalent". I offered an opinion with respect to their cost to manufacture as well as the risk of Panasonic hurting their plasma sales.
With respect to someone "dropping north of two grand", the average consumer makes up the over whelming majority of sales. The average consumer does very little research and depends on what their friends or family purchased and more so on the guidance of store sales assistance. The number one trait that determines what they buy is based upon what they see, this has been validated by numerous studies and survey's.
Also, if someone walks into a store with the intent on spending "north of two grand", they are going to make their choice on two things: What are they getting? and how does it look? They are not videophiles, and they are not reading and researching forums and AV sites.
I've been working with consumers for 29 years, I know how they think. They don't think like us.
