What to do with wired telephone lines

Thread Starter
A recent post on a separate issue made me think about something. Our house like many I would assume is wired with telephone lines to pretty much every room. In our case it is cat5 wire. We are of the cell phone generation and have no need for land lines. What are people doing with their installed phone lines? Anything interesting?

Leave them until you need it down the road. Or like happened to a house we just wired, tear it all out and sell the copper. ....... And I'm not suggesting you tear it out by the way.

Room to room coms would be nice.

If the wiring is a homerun from all of the rooms, wire it as ethernet connections. Otherwise, just leave it. Next person in, may go with digital phone, which the wiring can be used for. There is no need to rip it out, just because you do not like it being there.

It's funny that everyone thinks you are going to rip it out!

I used mine to connect some older linksys 54wrts on all levels of my house and the garage and used them as wireless access points so that my wifi is very strong everywhere including the garage and back deck. I used the in house wiring for home running these back to switches that I installed that ultimately connect everything back to the main router.

Works great and all of my kids have at least one or more wireless devices now and so do my Wife and I. My main receiver is controllable over IP/Wifi as well so I can control zone 2 (backyard) from anywhere that I get wifi.

Let's see...

That CAT5e cable can be used for Ethernet networks, intercoms, HD video distribution, IR distribution, controls for a distributed sound system, and the list goes on...

I used mine to wire a bunch of Dallas 1-wire temperature sensors so I could track what the temp in each room was...

Especially if installed before the mid 1990s. CAT3 is fine for 10mbs, might work at 100mbs depending on distance.
