i tested for image retention on a 51e550 at the store and they seemed to have made it equal to the higher screen sizes. i put the set in dynamic mode and left the menu up for 20 mins then ran the white scrolling bar and there was not a hint of retention. if i did this with a d series 51 inch you would clearly see the left over image of the menu.

i would suggest you go to the store and do your own test on the tv you want but judging on the 51e550 ir seems to not be an issue this year.

I think it varies from model to model as well as screen size. My 50'' C7000 was very prone to IR. My new 51'' E8000 gets it as well but to a lesser degree. My friends 2011 Samsung 43'' 4 series plasma (low end model) doesnt show any IR at all.

yes my PN50C7000 was bad for that as well, when it was in screen saver mode that samsung logo bouncing all over the screen. it would be visible etching all over the screen.
My new PN60E8000 i don't see it doing that at all , so maybe size does matter LOL

I have a 58C8000 and have never noticed any IR.

If you've read enough D series thread talk, I think it's pretty clear that the 59s and 64s are much less likely to have IR problems. My 59D7000 (fully calibrated) has never shown a hint of it. Those looking to buy an E may want to avoid the 51 if IR is a concern.

I don't know how much I'd rely on the "compatable with list" as I find most of the apps on my 64E8000 say the same when you look at their compatability list (don't mention the E series at all) but they are obviously working on the "E"...For Examaple VUDU and Blockbuster Apps don't list they are compatable with the E...I'll have to see if HBO GO loads tonight, haven't tried such..

Oh, yes, what is holding you up from applying the floating brightness firmware fix? It really does work.

Larry

Cell and contrast settings are very high, but my numbers are exactly those posted on CNET's settings for that model, in cinema mode, and the image looks excellent. If I dropped the cell and contrast down it would start looking muddy. CNET's settings were right on the money for me.

Yet another reason for me to strongly consider a Panasonic this year. Money dictated I can really only afford the 51" model. That leaves me with possibly the same IR that I already have with the D7000, which is awful. It's one of the biggest things I hate about the tv (and fluctuating brightness).

How do you activate the Cinema Smooth mode? I completed the settings recommended by Cnet, yet I can't access the Cinema Smooth Mode. I am connected via HDMI port 2 (ARC) is this correct?

Thanks

You have to be watching a 24p source such as a Blu Ray with 24p enabled on the player as well.

HBO GO will be on the E8000 just not yet.

Samsung has exclusivity. Not going to be on Panasonic TVs

I suspect that the gamma spike at the high end may have had something to do with the slight layering oddities on bright objects and faces, and that could be fixed with a 10 pt adjustment.

On the other hand, I don't think CMS would add much since all the colors, esp red, measured so well.

Chad,

Can you post some post Cal settings to see how it compares to Cnet

thats good news i assumed they had to write some code or something for the app to work and make it compatable with the new 2012 sets

If these panels are anything like the D series (which it seems they are), then copying grayscale and color calibrations doesn't usually work very well because there is too much panel-to-panel variation. IMO, anyone spending over $1000 on a TV should absolutely have a basic calibration disc (AVS HD 709 is FREE!) and spend the 5 minutes to do contrast, brightness, sharpness color and tint by eye. Then, if you really want, you can experiment with calibrations and use grayscale ramps and color clipping patterns to make sure you're not making things worse. I have borrowed settings which were actually significantly worse than stock movie mode on my D7000. Now I'm a DIY calibrator with a basic colorimeter. BTW, there is a very detailed, easy to follow guide to calibrating the D series plasmas (no reason it wouldn't work on the E) Larry has posted here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9#post21785199

Even if you're lazy, you can at least do the offsets and gains to flatten out your grayscale in under 30 minutes with a little practice.

Here is David Katzmeier's list of compatible apps on Smart TVs and, at the bottom, HBO Go is not compatible with 2012 Samsung, at least not yet.

I read some info in here but didn't see anything definite... Are the "brightness pops" when watching a game the screen seems to get brighter and darker on its own?...

If so has anyone heard from Samsung what is causing this and if a firmware update will fix it...

I have the PN60E8000 with Directv HD receivers.

Thanks for any info.

I see fluctuations in brightness like what you describe here ALOT while watching hockey and also have seen a few with other content. BUT the fluctuations during hockey are apparently NOT true Fbr/brightness pops. People are calling them "hockey pops''. Some on this site have tryed to diminish the fact that what i am seeing is a problem by saying all i am seeing is the flashes of camera's at the arena. This is NOT the case and i know for me it is enough that i am trying to get a cash refund to buy a different TV. I love the picture on the E8000 but am affraid that if i just request a new panel i will see the same problem on that one as well because Samsung acted like they knew nothing of this issue when i called them about it.

Do you see these "hockey pop" fluctuations as well on your E8000?!?!?

Well, I would say that getting your money back may be your best option as you don't seem as if you will be satisfied any other way. I sense a bit of buyers remorse - just my opinion - .
I would suggest you look at your next tv before buying (even though seeing a tv in a place like bb is not a really good place to judge it) one. I think you will find out that not only is the samsung E8000 one of the best tv's there is for pq but many (if not all) have the same troubles you describe with hockey. I have the E8000 and love it. I have not noticed any of the above mentioned problems at all. I am considering another one, a 64 inch for our family room, because it has such an awesome picture and all the new features are a plus for me. I also love the full web browser. I am really looking forward to the upgrade feature next year, as in what it will include . It will be great next year to be able to update the hardware/software of this tv for a little cost, and not have to buy a new tv again. I have a hunch many people may be wishing that they bought an E8000 next year when these upgrades come available. Now, I could be wrong but I just have a feeling this new feature is going to really be realized next year and the year after.
I reccomend anyone with this tv to watch Happy feet 2, it is really great. I was impressed with the 3D on this tv, even better than the D8000, IMHO. I have watched Alice in wonderland, Avatar, Happy feet 2, Tron, IMAX Under the sea, Tangled, Beauty and the beast and How to train your dragon on this tv so far and I am super impressed with the performance. No ghosting/xtalk - (very minimal on very fast scenes with alot of movement- as in under the sea, all the little fish swimming around very fast. again, very minimal.) and the colors are so vivd and crisp. Well, ENJOY everyone.

GOD BLESS

TONY

It seems the combination of Samsung plasmas and hockey generally don't satisfy. Wouldn't know, never watch. Shoot, can't even remember the last time I skated.

As far as corporations not admitting fault...get used to it.

I do love the picture quality in both 2d and 3d as well. If not for the issues i have had with it, i would be praising the TV just as you are. I am just having a hard time getting over the flaws of the TV.

Honestly, I keep going back and forth on getting a refund and replacing it with another manufacturer OR keeping it. Although I would at least get a new E8000 replacement because this one also buzzes and has 4 dead pixels.
Maybe this particular panel is defective and i should give the E8000 one more try? Even if the new one is the same maybe i just need to learn to live with it since everyone seems to think that it is just a limitation of the technology and the reality of todays plasma's... I do realize there is no perfect tv out there but its just dissapointing because i WAS happy with my C7000 (until it had color banding issues) while watching all content, including hockey.

I agree that the upgrade kit could prove to be worthwhile in the future...its one of the things making my decision a tough one.

You don't! CS is only available when you have a connected source (say a BR player) set in 1080/24p.

For all who are complaining about hockey Pops. In the Panasonic threads already reports owners of St50 and Gt50 with pops .

It seems if you love hockey you are going to have to deal with it.
