Let's face it: to be a legit superhero you have to be superhuman at some level.
And I repeat an earlier lament: Green Arrow without the VanGogh beard is an lame imposter. Heck, he wouldn't even have to grow one; it could be part of his disguise. If he's got time to put on the hoodie, he's got time to glue on the beard, I say!

Introducing, the Hoodie Beard. Easy on, easy off - it's the ultimate disguise. It's so realistic, it will stand up to any bar-room beard growing contest. Pull it, yank it...it won't come off 'til the hoodie comes off. It's so tough, Chuck Norris uses one to hide his third fist of death.

That's right, the Hoodie Beard.

What would you pay for such a marvel of engineering? Call now and you won't pay $1000 or $500 or even $100. Take advantage of this special TV offer and you'll get the Hoodie Beard for the super hero low price of just $19.95.

But wait...there's more:

Call in the next 5 minutes and we'll double the order. That's right, you'll get two Hoodie Beards for the same low price of $19.95. Just pay shipping and handling for each unit.

You'll get two Hoddie Beards in your choice "gecko green", "fury of Norris red" or "stalking bad guys" black.

It's the Hoodie Beard: it's not a beard if it's not a Hoodie....

HIT!

That was definitely not slow and a show that is likely to be on for years to come.

Is that sarcasm, or was it decent?

It was really good.

I prefer the Adam West version. I need some humor with my angst. Some Campbell with my Bruce, so as to speak.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the season opener.

And I'll note that it dispenses with the idea that this show is a pseudo-spinoff from "Smallville". The Oliver Queen on this show is substantially different from what we saw on "Smallville".

I liked it.

We'll see where it goes.

I'm in. One of the very few new fall shows I'm looking forward to seeing each week.

It was fun. Still has my interest. Smart set up gives it lots of places to go. We'll see how it progresses.

Glad I caught this one also.

I thought it might be decent, and I still liked it... which means it exceeded my cautious optimism... so that's a good thing.

I'm pretty sure I recognized a lot of Smallville sets, though.

Queen mansion looked a lot like Luthor mansion... the law office looked & sounded a lot like the Daily Planet, and that Luther-esque bald bad guy looked like he was in Lionel's old office!

In case you missed it they are repeating the pilot Friday night.

The CW Network must really be happy with the show today. Arrow good reviews from viewers, and it was also the most-watched CW premiere in 3 years.

A couple things I liked:

Good casting for the lead character (unlike shows such as Grim).
Great stunt work and action scenes.

A few ridiculous moments that really broke scenes for me:

- disappearing out of a fast moving car while being guarded by a trained military specialist
- facing a machine gun (with standard unlimited ammo) at nearly point blank range, yet never getting hit
- he cannot be recognized because of a hood that covers mostly the back of his head, even when inches from his enemy's face

Ha! I thought the exact same thing when I saw the various sets. The rest of the city looks like Metropolis.

Huh, did I miss a change to Batman? He has never had any super powers, no recuperative powers. He is a human, he heals like a human. He has no incredible strength, he has the strength of a well trained normal person augmented by some gadgets in his suit.

What about the pull up bar that he was able to surge upwards on? Anyone think they could do that?

I'm in! I enjoyed the pilot.

I liked the fight scenes/training montages, but I thought the lead actor was a bit wooden and uncharismatic, hopefully he'll get better as the series goes on.

Well, in one gym we had a triple set of chin-up bars and I'd jump up onto the lowest one and launch myself up to the second and finally the third, so maybe I could do what he did once. Any more than that and I'd be flat on the floor with a big bar-shaped bruise on me.

The problem is, you have no leverage to raise the bar, so you're relying completely on essentially doing a chin up, then jerking your hands up with the bar before your body drops. I have maybe one of those in me. Plus, I'd have to be prepared to miss a lot in practice - which would really hurt...

I'm light and strong, but not light enough to make that much of a difference - and definitely not that strong.

I wonder if for the wide shot they ran it in reverse where it might not be as noticeable, then had him stand on a lift for the closer stuff. If he really did it, then I'm impressed.

It's called a Salmon Ladder
http://sasukepedia.wikia.com/wiki/Salmon_Ladder

http://www.edgeboston.com/entertainment/television//137841/stephen_amell_::_ripped_and_ready_as_the_green_arrow

One of the most stunning physical moments of the pilot that is not a fight sequence is when a shirtless Amell climbs up ladder with a freestanding bar that he must maneuver into each rung by his strength and dexterity. How exactly did he master the technique?

"At Tempest Freerunning Academy," Amell said, "people train for ’America Ninja Warrior,’ and those are called the salmon ladder, or sometimes they call them the dyno. And that’s there at this facility so they asked me if I could do it. And we took a tape of it. We sent it to the producers. Greg [Berlanti, the out Executive Producer] freaked out, as he always does, when he’s sent new physical things that I’m doing, and then they put it into the show. Basically it’s a chin up with a dance move, if that makes sense."

I liked the episode too. But wow, the lead sure didn't look malnourished for someone who was stranded on a desert island for 5yrs.eek.giftongue.gif

I also understood the arrow proficiency stuff (which he obviously is self-taught on the island), but in the comics Ollie didn't become proficient in hand-to-hand combat until he returned from the island and was taught by members the JLA, JSA, (Batman, Wildcat, etc, etc). Unless he had access to some krav maga videos or something, I just don't see how he manage by himself.

I think that is backstory yet to come. That is the set up I was referring to. A lot of stuff on the island, his prior Paris Hilton existence and the information his dad gave him. Lots of silver in that mine.

That's the long-time narrative, but in reality no "normal" person can do what he does no matter how well trained. It's superhero artistic license. That's all I'm saying.

Judging by the Deathstroke mask with the arrow through the eye on the island, I'm guessing he was trained by Slade Wilson while stranded, but something went very wrong. They seem to be taking an Earth 1 approach here, which I'm up for. I think Green Arrow always worked best on the smaller scale stories, anyways.

My thoughts exactly. I was waiting for Lex to show up!

Finally a comic hero who kills more bad guys rather than just stun them. I come from the days when Superman would either sock the guy or bend his revolver barrel.

Like when George Reeves would stand there with his hands on his hips and chest puffed out as a guy unloads 6 rounds into his chest - then duck to avoid the revolver when the bad guy threw it at his head? biggrin.gif

I love how they shot him shooting the tennis balls: first show him throwing balls, then immediately cut to balls against the wall.

Think we'll ever see a boxing-glove arrow?tongue.gif

Did you miss the shot where he fired off the arrows between the one of him throwing the balls and them stuck to the wall with the arrows?

Some of the versions of the Green Arrow origin play up that he needed to master archery to catch/kill food on the island to survive... so in those origins, the island he is trapped on apparently is teeming with game animals.

I tend to think Cast Away was a bit more realistic in that you wouldn't be fortunate to be trapped on an isolated island filled with all the food you would ever need... but this is a staple of the Green Arrow origin. he didn't just learn archery for fun... but out of a need to hunt.

So... in that sense, he would be well fed once he built his skills.
