Seems counter-intuitive to do it this way but thats how Onkyo does it.
Give it a try and see which gives you better audio. My experience with several AV processors that had no direct analog path seemed to yield no differences. My current AV Processor is an Integra DHC 40.1 - very similar to your 876. I find no difference using analog or optical/coax out from my Oppo BDP-80 vs using the HDMI path.
Thank you Knucklehead90 for that info. As a beginner I must say I don't quite understand your AV language therefore don't understand how to connect the cables as you are suggesting.
For example, what does "does not have direct channel inputs" mean? What does IIRC mean? You say "see which gives you better audio" but I don't see in your reply where you explain 2 different ways to connect the 2 components. For a begginer like me I hate to say it but please give the names of the input and outputs on the back of each component when you say how to connect, that is the only way I know how to follow your explanation. I hate to be so dumb regarding this subject but I am trying to learn. Thank you for your understanding.
