Some PS3 HDMI Difficulties Explained

Thread Starter
Often we get questions about how come the PS3 has difficulties connecting over HDMI but all other components work fine.

I have an explanation for some of this "quirkiness". The PS3's default setting for Deep Color is "Automatic". As we all know, the PS3 menu system is multiple layers deep, which means many people may not even know there is a Deep Color setting.

The Deep Color setting can be found under "settings" then "Display Settings" (not "Video Settings") and then at the bottom of the list "Deep Color Output (HDMI)". If you are having problems with handshaking, then set this setting to "Off".

Settings --> Display Settings --> Deep Color Output (HDMI) --> "Off"

I suspect with Auto, there is some handshaking that has to take place with the sink (display device) to determine if Deep Color is also available on the display. With PS3 Deep Color set to "Off" that handshake doesn't happen and you don't start using Deep Color and the associated increased bandwidth inadvertently.

I'm not saying this will solve all of the PS3 handshaking issues, but the bandwidth will be reduced by not using Deep Color and since no one has a disc that uses Deep Color, your playback will also be closer to the color the director / mastering engineer intended.

Thanks for this tidbit. I've had far fewer problems with HDMI since my initial post in another thread (for which you provided me good information) but one cropped up the other day. I will check this immediately.
