No real details yet, but released by Warner in Germany July 20th!!
This should be a sign of it hitting worldwide just like Demolition Man before it!

Cool. I've been waiting for this one.

At last!

A release of this Blu-ray in the USA sometime this year would be excellent!

Great news! The US DVD looked like it was sourced from the laserdisc master...I ended up importing the UK DVD which was 16:9 and 5.1 (and quite good). The Blu-Ray ought to be terrific

The R1 dvd is ancient beyond ancient. Will gladly upgrade this to BD.

Tried to watch this recently...it hasn't aged well IMO.

112 minutes of airlocks opening and closing in high definition, what's not to love?

Connery in space! Hard to pass up.

I have a capsule review and thumbnails of the PAL DVD here.

And don't forget trucker hats!

I thought there was supposed to be a remake but maybe it got canceled. Around here the DVD was always thought of as an early poorly done DVD and to be avoided. A well done BD would indeed be welcome.

I see Warner is releasing Altered States the same day. I want that more than Outland.

The [Altered States] DVD is truly pathetic, one of the worst things I have seen from a major studio.

According to The Digital Bits, the US release date is July 10th:

All I can say is: it's about effing time. The worst DVD known to mankind finally gets some HD love.

I recently saw a HD braodcast of this and all I can say is it was mediocre quality wise at best, so if they just recycle then we may be disappointed. Time will tell. I'll likely be picking this title up so long as the price is decent.

Considering this was probably the worst DVD of all time, just having it in a true 16x9 format will be the icing on the cake.

The only HD version I've ever come across of it was on TBS a few months ago -- and it wasn't HD but standard-def stretched out to 16:9. Awful was the first word that came to mind Again, the UK DVD had a remastered 16:9 transfer and 5.1 track we didn't get in the US. If the BD comes from that master (which it likely will), it ought to be fine...I picked that up from Amazon UK for a couple of bucks a few years back.

Keep in mind that Peter Hyams pulls double-duty as cinematographer on all of the films he directs, and he has a fetish for extremely dim, grainy images. He shoots mostly in available source light with high speed film stocks. Even with a perfect transfer, I wouldn't expect a whole lot of eye candy from this. At its best, it might look similar to the '2010' Blu-ray, which looks... just OK.

It should still be a big step up from the crappy DVD, though. So that's something.

No-it was on HDNet Movies, so was not molested like TNT did/used to do to movies. It was not SD, but clearly an old HD transfer, probably from the original DVD release. I have no problem with grain from all the dark scenes. It seemed a bit soft from what I recall, though much better than a SD DVD version.

The original DVD didn't come from an HD transfer. It came from the same NTSC standard def transfer as the laserdisc.

Like all of the early Warner discs, it was always the laserdisc master

Lol. That sounds verbatim of a quote read off by Hyams of himself in the Relic commentary. He disagrees. I would agree with the description though. That's certainly his 'look'.

I'm ok with that, as long as the transfer and sound are good, the DVD is just horrible, almost to the point of unwatchable.

If you like teal and orange, you will be well served.

Indeed. I will be physically burning the DVD when we have a little bonfire in the backyard. It was the first DVD I ever bought and I thought it was awful from day one. Can't wait to light that fire on July 10th.

As long as it looks like the film did theatrically, who cares if certain people don't think it's "eye candy"? I look forward to seeing the film in HD as it will be immeasurably better than the R1 DVD which was derived off the laserdisc master.

I can 100% guarantee it was not teal in cinemas
