I just hope that Goldsmith's score sounds good and immersive. I don't care about all this mono crap, but that's just me

I'll get OUTLAND Jerry Goldsmith 2-CD in few weeks. I like the disc content with Ladd intro that sounds cool in six-track DOLBY STEREO on the opening with nice low oomph, then cuts to Jupiter with DEEP RUMBLE MEGASOUND!

Also anyone watching the planets at the moment? Jupiter to top part of the sky often with moon below it some nights, Venus below and it is nice to watch as its the brightness in the sky, being the neatest to the Earth, Mercury is somewhat way, way down and I haven't been able to see it as its out of line-sight. Mars is over to left part of sky, I can't see Saturn? I guess it will come into view later in year.

I think the bluray should have an isolated Jerry Goldsmith Dolby Digital 6track discrete 5.1 score playing too bad Jerry is not here no more to give an audio commentary for the fans.

That's a great soundtrack. I always thought John Williams' Ladd logo music inspired some of his darker horn timbres in his later score for Saving Private Ryan.

Yeah I can hear the Ladd opening in my head and yeah I know where your coming from with that. It does sound very close.

This one as deep note at the end, same style white opening as used in OUTLAND.

Some parts of the Jerry Goldsmith score sounds like COMA.

The ultimate enemy is still man.

I knew you was going to play that listened to it early this year and in STEREO I think COMA should at least get Dolby TrueHD 5.1-7.1 with mono mix original for vintage listeners.

Do you want to go inside?
Not really.

The Jefferson institute looks a bit sinister looking from the outside with dodgy going ons inside! Did anyone see Dr. Harris walking around outside.

At its best, it might look similar to the '2010' Blu-ray, which looks... just OK.

It should still be a big step up from the crappy DVD, though. So that's something.

Just for the record, On Outland, Hyams wrote and directed. Stephen Goldblatt was the DP.

And yes, the new Blu-ray is like seeing this movie for the first time if the frame of reference is any previous video version. Aces on this one.

Goldblatt says he was only hired to be a scapegoat if something went wrong with the Introvision process. For his part, Hyams claims he's done his own cinematography all the way back to his first feature, but that he couldn't take credit until 2010 because of union issues.

Not fantastic, when there is a lot going on it gets a bit muddled

The BD has a Problem:

From 1 hour and 16 Minutes to 1 hour and 31/32 Minutes it looks much softer than the rest of the movie.
Somethings going wrong here oder problems with the material?

You have to admit, it wasn't much of a challenge, but I'm very glad to hear it anyway.

Yes the dvd was one of the worst of the early Laserdisc masters

Thanks for the badd news!!!
JJ
Can you pick a scene? The Cave? The Breakout? The re-Transformation"?
You don't think its a "this" release transfer issue, do you? Maybe more too do w/the original soundtrack?
Or, even the home video 5.1 mix

Butt Hay, an anamorphic DD 5.1 for ten bucks in the nineties...

I haven't seen this movie in over a decade (I miss the old Sci-Fi channel) and it will become part of my Blu-Ray collection as soon as I can get my grubby little paws on it.

The reviewer in the following link seems to report no problems with PQ (it is obvious from the review, it is one of his favorite films):

Someone somewhere will probably claim "DNR", because somebody always does, but in fact there is no evidence of detail-stripping or degraining on this transfer, nor is there any indication of artificial sharpening. Nor did I notice any compression artifacts. The darkness of Hyams' photographic style and the softness inherent in pre-CG FX may give pause to some viewers, but this Blu-ray accurately represents the film Outland as it was made and seen in 1981 (I saw it multiple times). My score of 4.5 is based on the disc's fidelity to the original image. For those who insist on scoring it differently, please at least say why.
