Oh, I think we can all live without the original English dub! I have the JP R2 DVD right now and I just can't bring myself to show this movie to my kids because that dub is so awful. Here's hoping every Blu-ray release uses the new dub...

That dub is long dead for OFFICIAL releases. A scammer sold me a bootleg that had that dub, it is just terrible. Luckily the official DVD has the newer dub so no others may experience it.

Totoro on the other hand, I miss the old dub, the new one has no soul.

Wait, so you're telling me that the horrible dub on the official R2 DVD is the good one? Good lord. It's hard to imagine there used to be a worse one. Whenever people talked about the bad original dub, I just assumed they meant this one. Maybe I'll save this movie for when the kids can read a little faster...

EDIT: Aw, MAN. It's totally Michael Keaton, I just never checked before. That means this is the dub we're getting then. And I was SO looking forward to an upgrade on this one.

The Michael Keaton dub is the good one. It has been used on official releases for about 10 years now. The older dub made my ears hurt...

I see Lupin III is available now on BD from Amazon ... but the description shows neither english subtitles nor dubbing? Sooo close, and yet so far:rolleyes:.

Korra Bluray is up now.

Howl and Totoro came out today, Howl is playing right now and it is as good as the past Ghibli releases if not better.

I was hoping Amazon would drop the price on those two today for the release but no such luck. I just picked up the other Ghibli titles on Blu-ray when Amazon put them on sale last week. I guess I'll have to wait for another similar sale.

Ghibli bluray movies are day one buys for me.

Any issues with subtitle translation on these discs? Do both have lossless Japanese audio?

I'll check sometime today, my Japanese is good enough to spot inaccurate subs at least...

Howl is 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio for English and Japanese

Totoro is 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio for English, French and Japanese (it is the Fanning dub)
According to this handy link, Totoro and Howl's have both subtitles AND dubtitles. I'm assuming the dubtitles are available if you choose the English SDH subs.

Yep, the English subs are for hard of hearing (dubtitles) and something else, it isn't dubtitles, but not proper Japanese subs either. (may be liberties taken due to Japanese sayings, but it could also be based on some of the French dub, of which I understand nothing)

I just received Ponyo from Amazon. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a slip cover. Does anyone have one that they want to get rid of? Thanks.

Looks like Howl and Totoro will be released in the UK this week. I like the packaging better. Has anyone seen reviews of these copies? Didn't the UK edition of Nausicaa have DNR issues?
From what I've been able to figure out, most if not all of the UK/AU releases to date have had DNR issues, and sometimes a slight overall tint change. Not that some people don't prefer it that way.

The UK releases of those titles have been out for some time (since November 2012). I like my UK copies just fine but I am not the perfectionist some posters here are. These two titles do look better to me than previous UK editions though. Be aware that they are region-locked so you will need a region-free player to watch the UK releases.

What about Ponyo? The UK edition has Japanese PCM audio, while the American copy is only Dolby Digital 5.1 for the original language track.

According to the handy link I posted upthread, it says this about the UK Ponyo video:
Quote:
highest bit-rate than the rest, marginally lower compression quality than the other 2 (noticeable only in a few scenes), only has the international version with the English language dub credits

Can't vouch for the accuracy of any of this myself though.

Mine didn't come with one, either. I'm not sure it's supposed to.

It was a little annoying until I realized the various movies will be nowhere near each other, so it's not noticeable.

I think mine came with one. I bought it at release though.

Release version definitely did. Looked at mine last night.

Just picked up Porco and two others. I don't know how I got talked into the JP discs but they're an expensive d*mned habit. They sure are pretty though. Once Mononoke is released, I think I'll be done. And broke.

Expensive, yes, but so beautiful. smile.gif

Well, that is odd then.

Was there by any chance some sort of movie cash, digital copy or other offer advertised on the slip cover? Perhaps that expired and they simply removed the slip covers that contained it.
Just checked mine. Slipcover is essentially identical to the case inserts (barcode is really the only difference). And it was BD + DVD, nothing to expire. They probably just stop including it as a cost saving measure as time goes on.
There are slipcovers on All of my US Ghibli/Disney blu rays, I got mine at the release date.

That is pretty sweet!

I honestly don't even like that many earlier Ghibli releases. But damn if Mononoke to Spirited Away isn't one of the finest three spots in animation history. Howl's is one of my top 5 animated films of all time and the US voices rock as well. Love the bitrate and transfer from what I have seen. Now I just need to get it.

A little jelly about that collection up there though. frown.gif

I must say I almost prefer the US art for Howl's in all honesty.

Ponyo I feel alseep on and could never imagine watching again. Couldn't stand it. Not unlike a few of the earlier releases. Certainly pretty to look at if nothing else.

GIVE ME MONONOKE, DAMMITT.
