Where to get 3D content?

You can stream some titles from Vudu or the PS3 video store, assuming you have a PS3.
There are 3D TV channels on Comcast (and other companies as well) that broadcast SBS or T/B 3D - but the resolution is half due to the format.

Blu-ray disks will give you the best results.

Side by side (which is 1/2 vertical resolution). VUDU has good quality but not BD quality.

In my opinion Vudu is about the best when it comes to resolution. They offer 3 resolutions (if you have the download Internet speed) including a 1080P. Price is higher for the better resolution. They also have free Trailers to test your system. And my TV's came with a free credit to Vudu.

If you have a Vizio or TCL 3DTV then Sensio's 3DGO! streaming service this spring will get you as close to blu-ray as possible. Apparently more TV manufacturers will be signing up soon as well.

I think VUDU has quite excellent quality. And the great thing is you can view 2 minute previews. I suggest watching the opening of Meet The Robinsons and see what you think. The seen with the rain looks fantastic!

Also, don't neglect YouTube. There are a lot of outstanding clips and demos there. And be sure to check your cable or satellite provider if you have one. Some good things can be found there too. I watched the entire Rose Parade in 3D from my cable provider's on demand section.

When you say much lower quality I'm assuming compared to BD. Just a "down and dirty" approximate of the difference.

BD is Frame Packed Over and Under. It has 2 full frames after decoding that are 1080x1920 (one for each eye). Also a BD can have a data rate of up to 48mbps (40mbps for video).

Cable is Side by Side (usually) with 2 fields that are 1080x960 (to fit in one 1080 frame). Also cable HD's data rate is usually limited to about <8mbps which is significantly less than BD's.

The 3d through cable is definitely of lower quality than 3d blurays. Many of the torrent sites now have 3d movie downloads. There are many in SBS format, however there are some full bluray isos. The isos are huge files though, typically from 20-40 gbs.

There are two generic types of 3D. Frame packed, and spatial compression. Blu-ray is frame packed. Spatial compression includes side-by-side, top/bottom, checkerboard and Sensio 3D. The the spatial compression formats, most result in 1/2 resolution (either vertical, or horizontal, etc). Sensio 3D format however is supposed to be near blu-ray quality. However Sensio is a patented format so only TVs that license the format (currently only Vizio, plus a LOI with TCL) are able to play Sensio 3D content.
