Nvidia will launch retail GT 640 (GK107) Kepler cards on June 5th at Computex in Taiwan. Can't wait to buy it, finally.

From what I've heard. AMD series cards give a worst PQ compared to nVidia. Might have just been for gaming. But I'd imagine its the same thing.

Huge GTX570 overstock delays GTX660 until August

 

I am not sure if it can be called "delay" because every source I've seen has said GTX 660 in summer (July-August).

My new laptop has the GTX 660M. Not sure how it does with HTPC use, but it plays Diablo 3 well.

Only 690, 680, 670 (all of them are very expensive, 670 ~$400) and 640 are available right now. 660, the successor to 560, comes later (in August?).

Good news, VP5 4K hardware decoding and 4K HDMI output all confirmed working according to jakmal's review. Bad news, still no retail GDDR5 version.

In my test VP5 struggles with decoding 4Kp60 (lots of stuttering). 4K UHD 60p clip (shot with JVC GY-HMQ10, ~$5,000, wow, cheap smile.gif). Well, HDMI can't output 4Kp60, though. Intel HD 4K with ArcSoft Video Decoder seems to be the only proper DXVA2 solution for this clip. Of course Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge 4C/4T is powerful enough to decode 4Kp60 (~60% CPU usage).

 

Other than 4K support and lower power consumption (roughly 10W reduction in interlaced contents with madVR), I didn't see any improvement of 640 over 430 (the same driver quirks/hardware limitations as Fermi cards). My preference goes to HD 7750 if I spend $110 on a graphics card.

No one sane will buy AMD when they drop support in less than 4 years, just ask the HD4xxx owners when they were moved to legacy support. Also AMD still can't even get 4K decoding working on HD7xxx and how long has that been on the market? AMD has crappy drivers on Windows and Linux.

This is the first time I am seeing a capture device which costs less than any possible display device for that native resolution smile.gif

I am adding the 4Kp60 clip to our suite (It may at least be of interest to the downscale and display on 1080p folks).

By the way, I am also simultaneously evaluating the AMD 7750 (its 4K decode is broken) where I expect at least madVR + DXVA2 CB to be functional for hardware decode and HQ rendering. I am facing an issue as described here:

renethx, Can you see if you can reproduce the problem?

Reliable HW decode with madVR is why I would recommend 640 over 7750. Btw, with the GT 430 (as well as the 540M), I had to be quite careful with the settings I chose for madVR in order to ensure no dropped frames. With the 640, I had a lot of leeway. Admittedly, this might be due to driver version differences, but I guess it would make the experience for novice users streamlined.

OK, I didn't see such a problem. Almost the same configuration as yours except for MPC-HC version (mine is 1.6.3.4943), madVR full screen exclusive, and possibly driver (mine is 12.6 beta). Actually playing back 1080i60 with DXVA2CB + madVR default HQ setting can be done even with Llano A6-3500 with no problem. Improvements I saw are related to 760p60 and 1080p60 under DXVA2CB + madVR default HQ setting.

Perhaps this is due to faster transfer rates between system memory and video memory. (Radeon cards are traditionally very slow). SVPMark reveals it.

 

BTW did you try QuickSync video decoder with Radeon dGPU? Perhaps it works better than DXVA2CB.
