I believe I read up-thread that there is a 1025 version but with recommendations to *not* update. However, my 46ES6580 has ver. 1025 and seems to work perfectly except for the smart hub flash (which is no big deal now that I know it is "normal"). Thanks to bweissman for verifying that those flashes are what others are seeing.

I did find some Advanced Setting recommendations up thread. But so far I've seen no reason to change other than in the basic settings (black level, contrast, etc.). Good sources are excellent on this set. No great blotches, no disturbing motion effects, etc. Apparently some of these issues are confined to sets having larger screens than mine, or so I hope smile.gif

That's the TV's firmware. I'm currently running 1025. The Smart Hub app version is different.

And, speak of the devil and the devil shall appear.... I, too, received a Smart Hub update this afternoon when I turned the set on to watch The Daily Show during lunch.

The flash issue appears to be fixed. The new Smart Hub version is 4.5311-5.0

Excellent! Thanks for sharing this info! Any idea if that was the only issue addressed?

No idea. Any issues you had in mind?

Thanks. I'll see if I can install that.

There was the issue with the flickering if you had the yahoo social widget installed or something. It was talked about early in this thread.

Dunno... don't use it.

It's hard not to install. Simply turn on the set and if it has a network connection, it will update. Smart Hub is very aggressive about that. You can find the version number from inside the Smart Hub by pressing the Tools button on the remote. I'm not in front if it right now, but menu navigation is pretty obvious from there.

Thanks. I found out about "aggressive". Went Smart Hub and it had already updated to that version. I've not yet noticed if it fixed the smart hub flash issue, but no flashes yet.

I did set up Amazon Prime and Netflix streaming while I was there. Most movies look very good.

I have had this version for a while and mine still flashes.

My issues with the smart hub flashing appear to be fixed after the recent update.

Likewise. I've not seen a Smart Hub flash since doing that update two days ago.

I think I'll wait a little more until I apply the update since everything is still working fine after disabling the network.

But doesn't that eliminate such things as:
  • Streaming from Amazon and Netflix
  • Firmware and software updates

I guess if you have the TV free standing, no sound bar etc., no need for network. But I'm using those features (streaming, for example) and have a sound bar. And with the latest software/firmware the Smart Hub flash has not been seen for 3 days (vs. frequently before the last update).

It does but I don't use Netflix so it's fine for me. I rarely stream movies and when I do I use my PS3 for that. But I do like the 3D demos in the dashboard, especially food fight.

If you don't see the flash for at least a week then I will update mine as the last "fix" worked for 4 days or so.

Long story but I ended up with this TV as a replacement from Samsung for a problem set they replaced (UN40D6000SFXZA) I have it wired directly with an Ethernet cable and it has software version 001024 on it. Should I update?

PS I used the calibrations from post 311 - to be honest I think my older set had a better picture.
I found this calibration setting to bring the picture to 6500k color on another website. The setting does provide a decent picture. However, I'm wondering if a professional calibration would tweak the picture in even better. In NH there are no local technicians where I live so the only option is the BB Geek Squad.

Any recommendations? Do you think the $250 would really make all that much of a difference and would be worth it? Please share your experience with professional calibration.

Thanks

I really like the 2D picture on this TV, but I have found the 3D Blu-ray quailty has not been good. A lot of issues with crosstalk in most if not all 3D Blu-ray movies I own. For example I was watching Wrath of the Titans the other night and had to turn it off part way in and watch the 2D version because the 3D was not good. I notice with 3D Blu-ray movies that things close in the foreground normally look fine, but background items are not clear and have crosstalk. If you adjust the TV to fix the background the foreground images start to show crosstalk. There is not way to make both work. I have a Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray player that has the latest firmware for playing 3D Blu-ray movies.

On the other hand....I find the Explore 3D Samsung app has great 3D video. Most if not all the videos in the app look great. No obvious problems with crosstalk. Can anyone explain to me why Explore 3D looks so good and 3D Blu-ray movies are just fair??? I have read that LED Active 3D TV's are more prone to crosstalk, but that doesn't explain why Explore 3D looks great. The only difference between the 2 sources is the Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray player and I have never heard of any issues with crosstalk with that player. Anyone have any insight on how I can resolve the 3D Blu-ray movie issue? Would replacing the Blu-ray player fix the issue?
I've only watched 2 3D Blu-rays on my Samsung TV via my Oppo BDP-93, and both looked great (Avatar & Men in Black 3). No crosstalk that I could see.

I've not tried a professional calibration, and likely I won't. My take is that the variation in quality of the sources is a significant factor, even now. I'm pretty happy with most BDs and cable channels with the settings I have now. I do have a calibration disk and may eventually use it. Paying someone else to do something I feel competent to do is unlikely.

I've only watched Avatar in 3D (at home and in the theater) -- plus a few other disks at a friend's house. Avatar is exceptional; others I've seen are not.

Otherwise, I'm not all that interested in 3D with today's technology. Since I must wear glasses, I'll need either a set which does not require glasses, or prescription 3D glasses, to make 3D viable.

But it appears, at least for 2012, most sets with the best features and performance for 2D also had 3D -- so little choice in most lines but to go 3D.

I have a Un32ES6500 in a bedroom and was wondering if others hear feedback from the TV speakers when there is bass? Maybe the TV has a problem. Also, I tried using a RCA 27" soundbar through 3.5mm sound out port but I could not control the volume or on/off from television. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by feedback. Feedback usually means audio output is being fed back into an input, i.e., a microphone.

Then again, I'm not sure I've ever heard bass from those tiny tinny speakers in my 46".
Probably a static sound describes it better. Any thoughts on a way to control power/sound on a soundbar connected to the TV?
Does the picture kind of wear in after a couple of weeks? I bought my Samsung almost 2 weeks ago. It took me at least a week to get picture settings that look the closest to natural to my eyes. Even then, the overall picture seemed a tad too vivid. But if I tried to tone it down further, it looked washed out.

So I've left it at the almost perfect but a tad too vivid setting. After an additional week, the picture now looks like it has settled in and is now spot on for my liking. So my question is - could the picture and TV actually settle in or do you think it's me and my eyes have settled in on the picture? Either way it's all good.

Thinking about either taking my 6100 back for a 6500 or a Panasonic ST50 – anyone care to chime in why I should choose the Samsung over the Panasonic?

I watch A LOT of the 24 news channels that all have static banners and logos. I see a lot of talk about the ‘IR’ (image retention?) that still persists on the plasmas. Is it going to be more headache than it is worth to babysit it? This was my original concern and now I’m back to it.

I calibrated my 6100 with the 10 Point White Balance last night and it looked pretty awesome with Blu-ray. Would I expect the ‘backlit’ 6500 to be even better I’m guessing? I’m sure the Samsung ‘smart’ features are superior, but I have a Widi device already and would probably upgrade it if I needed anything more in the ‘smart’ department.

It really boils down to the picture quality vs. the hassles of plasma I suppose. Appreciate input.

Costco has a deal on the UN65ES6550F right now, so is it any good, what should I watch out for?
Does it have any audo lip synch issues?

Now, all I have done at this point is to adjust using some of the settings here. Thanks DAVE999Z. Those settings helped a bit, made things a bit clearer, but still the image doesn't seem, SHOCKINGLY as good as the image I had from the EDTV that only really have 480p resolution. WTW!?

I guess I'm going to have to get the calibration device out again and run through all the settings, numbers., etc..

I did pretty much the same thing. We had a nice panny 42" EDTV in the BR for about 7+ years, worked great. But, I wanted to move it to HD and get some integrated apps. And save some power. I could literally see the power spikes when using the BR EDTV 42" plasma.

Now, granted those professional panny 480p plasmas were EXCELLENT tv's, even with "edtv" ratings. I've got some 50" HDTV's in plasma as well in the LR and GR, and they are also great.

Going from plasma to even current generation LED screens IS going to give a different view. It's not going to be apples to apples, and IMHO never going to be as sharp. There are always trade-offs.

I did manage to get what appears to be the same set up to some nice settings, had to turn off a bunch of regular settings that made things look blurry and some of the motion stuff made it nearly impossible to get sharpness up to snuff.

But, it is odd to think after 7+ year, moving from EDTV and to what is about five generations of set upgrades it almost seemed like it should be an SD to HD experience, which it is not.
